In this week's red carpet roundup, Cara D is sci-fi chic, Rihanna's dress makes us mad and Charlize Theron deserves more from Dior. By Nyree McFarlane.

Gwendoline Christie is the most elegant of white walkers this week in both a sassy oversized Bella Freud suit and an ethereal Marc Jacobs dress. Stylish AND on-theme. The dress has a vintage feel, which Gwen' can really pull off, but it's the suit that's true magic. It doesn't sound like it'd work: it's got a waistcoat, pants you'd have to steam for hours and a jacket reminiscent of Jim Carrey in The Mask. But you know what? Gwen' looks fabulous. It's strong, structured, a bit off-the-wall, and that's how I'd describe her personal style. She's staying in her lane and it's paying off. I'm aware that this will be a bit of a Vegemite (love it or hate it), but this dress is a work of art, and art is subjective. The beauty of this lies in its oddity, and Cara Delevingne looks otherworldly (in the best of ways). This Iris Van Herpen Couture dress looks like it's made out of metal (which would be uncomfortable from all angles) but is actually crafted from a light, molded plastic. Unusual, but if anyone's going to pull it off it's Cara D. Also, she's at the premiere of a sci-fi movie set in the 28th century, so this is about as event-appropriate as you'll ever get for a wearable silver slinky. Photo: Getty

I've loved Jenny Slate ever since that vocal-fry-heavy performance, and I love this dress on her. She looks absolutely beautiful. Can we all agree that it's excellent news that Emily Blunt will play Mary Poppins in the upcoming film remake of the story? I can think of no-one better to play the most loveable murderous, drug-peddling nanny of all time. Brava. Secondly, doesn't she look fabulous in this D&G;? I am a little fatigued by the sheer number of these Sicilian-tablecloth designs by Dolce & Gabbana, but that doesn't change the fact that Blunt looks fabulous (and those red satin sandals certainly help). There's no denying Charlize Theron looks beautiful. But she always does. (Also, she's promoting a movie in which she plays an assassin, and she looks deadly in the best of ways.) But Charlize's genetics don't let Dior off the hook for the fact they've dressed this goddess in a sports bra and a netball skirt and are trying to palm it off as high fashion (and make people pay a lot for it). This is like orange Met Gala Rihanna as reimagined by Mattel. Rihanna is beautiful and strong and fabulous and she has a sleek, daring sense of style that I usually love. This is why I'm particularly angry at this frothy, saccharine Giambattista Valli design. It's just too much dress. It's like 60s negligee mated with Queen Victoria's bustle (plus, throw in whichever era's fashion was most torturous for women thanks to those circulation-castrating shoes). I love Mandy Moore, her newly-strong brows and her freshly-fierce sense of style, which is why I'm extra surprised to see her looking like a chintzy, flammable tissue box cover in Carolina Herrera. This looks like two separates from the same collection NEVER meant to be worn together. Each would be OK when paired with something sleek and streamlined, but when combined the garments make poor Mandy look like an awkward prom-ready teen in the late 80s who is really into period dramas. I saw a story today about how Zara's latest few collections show that the trouser is basically dying out and the legging will soon reign supreme. I welcome any everlasting trend that means more Lycra and assures I will never have to undo my top button in a movie ever again. But even I draw the line at a full body stocking. Kat Graham usually looks fabulous on the red carpet, but this design is too 'Catwoman's negligee' to work. Last week she was our best dressed in Westwood, but Rita Ora spent this week cosplaying as Jenny 'from the block' Lopez. There's taking inspiration, and then there's identity theft. The looks are by Emilio Pucci and Chloe. I legit thought J-Lo had been cast in the next Baz Luhrman Netflix 70s-fest when I saw a collection of these pics floating around, but no, it's Rita Ora on a promo tour. She looks like a fabric swatch collection from a curtain shop in 1978. Also, side note, notice how she loves those Fear & Loathing aviators so much she bought them in multiple lens hues? Commitment.
