The arrest of General Pinochet exposed the frightening hatreds between the political left and right in Chile. While the left reminded the world of Pinochet’s horrific crimes, the right demanded that the horrors be put in their proper context. These were not atrocities, the argument runs, but excesses—what hard men do to restore order and economic success in a harsh environment.
In a Santiago theatre the emotional power-play of torture and disappearances finds expression. But their outlet in Chilean politics is stifled. Pinochet may not be in power anymore, but he certainly made sure his legacy would last. He changed the electoral rules so that the right had a stranglehold on the constitution. And though the democracy is flawed, its economy is the healthiest in South America, another side of the Pinochet legacy. Prosperity has sweetened memories. It helps explain why a solid third of the Chilean people still support a man the world reviles. The right has built memorials to the disappeared. Move on says the right. Don’t look back. Build a country for our children to play. But even if they should, can they stifle the anger of Pinochet’s victims?

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte (Valparaíso, 25 de noviembre de 1915-Santiago, 10 de diciembre de 2006) fue un militar chileno que encabezó la dictadura militar de Chile que se desarrolló entre 1973 y 1990, periodo conocido en ese país como Régimen Militar.
Su mandato cuenta con numerosos adeptos de la derecha política, los que destacan la instauración en Chile durante el Régimen Militar de una economía de libre mercado, integrada en la economía mundial y con una fuerte presencia del sector privado. Este cambio de modelo económico conllevó un acelerado crecimiento macroeconómico, que situó a Chile como uno de los países con mayor bonanza económica y con los mayores índices de desarrollo humano en América Latina. Por otra parte, dicho modelo también profundizó la concentración de riqueza y aumentó las desigualdades socioeconómicas del país.
Durante la dictadura se cometieron graves y diversas violaciones de los derechos humanos, razón por la cual ha sido criticada tanto en su país como en el resto del mundo. Pinochet debió enfrentar diversos procesos judiciales, algunos de los cuales fueron sobreseídos en vida por diversas razones, mientras que otros lo fueron a causa de su fallecimiento antes de que se dictara una resolución definitiva.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte (25 November 1915 – 10 December 2006) was a Chilean general, politician and the military ruler of Chile between 1973 and 1990; he remained the Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army until 1998. He was also president of the Government Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981. His rule of Chile was a dictatorship.
Under the influence of the free market-oriented neoliberal "Chicago Boys", the military government implemented economic liberalization, including currency stabilization, removed tariff protections for local industry, banned trade unions and privatized social security and hundreds of state-owned enterprises. These policies produced what has been referred to as the "Miracle of Chile," but critics state that economic inequality dramatically increased and attribute the devastating effects of the 1982 monetary crisis on the Chilean economy to these policies. Chile was, for most of the 1990s, the best-performing economy in Latin America, though the legacy of Pinochet's reforms continues to be in dispute.

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has said former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet will get nothing more than a "show trial" if extradited to Spain.
Speaking at the Conservative Party's annual conference, she also called the Labour government contemptible for allowing his extradition trial to go forward.
Thatcher's comments came hours after a British judge excused the former dictator from appearing in court later this week.
The ruling came after a doctor testified the general suffered two small strokes last month.
For the second day in a row, Margaret Thatcher created a storm in British politics.
On Tuesday, the former prime minister lashed out at plans to join the European Union, blaming the continent for all the problems Britain had suffered during her lifetime.
On Wednesday, she turned her attention to her former ally Augusto Pinochet, addressing his plight at a rally held in conjunction with the annual Conservative party conference.
The meeting was the most eagerly awaited event of the Conservative party conference.
The speech was one of Lady Thatcher's first at a Tory conference since she was dumped as party leader in 1990 and marked the culmination of an electrifying return.
To the delight of an adoring crowd, the woman known as the Iron Lady accused Britain of leaving Pinochet in the lurch after he saved British lives during the Falkland Islands' War.
She went on to say that Pinochet was not on trial for human rights abuses but for defeating
communism - comments which sparked a rousing round of applause.
She added the Spanish case against the general was fraught with inconsistencies that made a fair trial impossible.

"The chance of Senator Pinochet receiving anything resembling what Britain would recognise as justice in a Spanish court is minimal, not least because key witnesses for his defence run the risk of immediate arrest if they set foot on Spanish soil. What is planned then is a show trial with a preordained outcome. Lingering death in a foreign land."

Baroness Thatcher also had stinging criticism for the administration of Prime Minister Tony Blair, whom she accused of deserting a longtime British ally.

The rally in Blackpool was also attended by Pinochet's son, who took the podium to shake the hand of the woman he said had become the public face of his father's defence.
Baroness Thatcher has been a longtime friend of the former dictator.
She maintains he saved hundreds of British lives during the Falkland War by using Chilean radar to give the British early warning of Argentine air raids.

Another cause for concern among Pinochet supporters is the general's deteriorating state of health.
A British judge on Wednesday excused the former dictator from appearing in court later this week.

The 83-year-old had been scheduled to be in court on Friday, when a ruling is expected on Spain's request to extradite him.

En 1976, el director español José María Berzosa vino a Santiago con el apoyo del Instituto National de l’Audiovisuel para grabar un documental para la televisión francesa sobre lo que estaba pasando en Chile a tres años del Golpe. Lejos de filmar otro clásico documental de denuncia, Berzosa se adentró en la realidad del país a través de una mirada sobre aspectos extraños o hasta el momento inexplorados, particularmente la propia Junta Militar y los apoyos que encontraba su gestión en la sociedad chilena. El resultado fue el programa "Chili: impressions" (Chile: impresiones), compuesto de cuatro capítulos, transmitidos en Francia en abril y mayo de 1978.
El primero de ellos, que presentamos en el sitio hace algunos meses, se tituló "Les pompiers de Santiago" y explora el apoyo con que contaba el gobierno dictatorial entre la oligarquía chilena y las clases medias, a través del seguimiento de la Cuarta Compañía del Cuerpo de Bomberos de Santiago, la "Pompe France".
En el segundo capítulo “Voyage au bout de la droite”, Berzosa continúa el “viaje por la derecha chilena” entrevistando al capellán del Ejército, al presidente de la comisión constitucional y a los dirigentes sindicales puestos por la Dictadura.
Los últimos dos episodios –“Au Bonheur des Généraux” y “Monsieur le président” – son, sin embargo, los más increíbles. Ahí, Berzosa entrevista por separado y en extenso a los cuatro miembros de la Junta, en sus despachos y en la comodidad de sus hogares, acerca de la realidad de Chile por esos días. Además de las respuestas esperables sobre la necesidad de una autoridad fuerte y de las dificultades políticas y administrativas del gobierno, Berzosa y su asistente Chantal Baudis conducen una entrevista “humana” con cada uno de los Comandantes en Jefe, junto a sus esposas, abordando temas como la felicidad, el arte, la filosofía, los hobbys o la ética. Así, podemos ver a Mendoza refiriéndose a su amor por los caballos y los perros, a Leigh hablando sobre los intelectuales y los autores del “boom”, a Merino pintando al óleo y jugando golf o al mismísimo Pinochet señalando lo que significa para él la felicidad y explicando qué es la “Geopolítica”.
El efecto, es un espectáculo fascinante de frases hechas, desfachatada hipocresía y “banalidad del mal”, que Berzosa contrasta hábilmente con imágenes y testimonios de familiares de detenidos desaparecidos, de víctimas de la represión o de trabajadores de a pie, que desmienten el simulacro de tranquilidad y alegría que pintan las autoridades y sus partidarios con sus vidas y declaraciones.
En el año 2004, el director español quiso montar una nueva película con el material de las cuatro emisiones, particularmente con aquél de las dos últimas. El resultado fue la película que hoy presentamos: “Pinochet y sus tres generales”.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte, more commonly known as Augusto Pinochet (Spanish pronunciation: [auˈɣusto pinoˈʃā] or Spanish pronunciation: [auˈɣusto pinoˈtʃet]; 25 November 1915 – 10 December 2006), was dictator of Chile between 1973 and 1990 and Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army from 1973 to 1998. He was also president of the Government Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981.
Pinochet assumed power in Chile following a United States-backed coup d'état on 11 September 1973 that overthrew the elected socialist Unidad Popular government of President Salvador Allende and ended civilian rule. Several academics have stated that the support of the United States was crucial to the coup and the consolidation of power afterward. Pinochet had been promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the Army by Allende on 23 August 1973, having been its General Chief of Staff since early 1972. In December 1974, the ruling military junta appointed Pinochet President of Chile by joint decree, although without the support of one of the coup's instigators, Air Force General Gustavo Leigh.

Khan Academy
Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan with the aim of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. The organization produces short lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization's website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. The main language of the website is English, but the content is also available in other languages.
History
The founder of the organization, Salman Khan, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States to immigrant parents from Bangladesh and India. After earning three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MEng in electrical engineering and computer science), he pursued an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In late 2004, Khan began tutoring his cousin Nadia who needed help with math using Yahoo!'s Doodle notepad.When other relatives and friends sought similar help, he decided that it would be more practical to distribute the tutorials on YouTube. The videos' popularity and the testimonials of appreciative students prompted Khan to quit his job in finance as a hedge fund analyst at Connective Capital Management in 2009, and focus on the tutorials (then released under the moniker "Khan Academy") full-time.

Chile (/ˈtʃɪli/;Spanish: [ˈtʃile]), officially the Republic of Chile (Spanish: 
República de Chile ), is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. The arid Atacama Desert in northern Chile contains great mineral wealth, principally copper. The relatively small central area dominates in terms of population and agricultural resources, and is the cultural and political center from which Chile expanded in the late 19th century when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands, and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands.

La Muerte (Spanish for "The Death") is the sixth studio album by Dutch death metal band Gorefest. It was released in 2005 on Nuclear Blast Records. It was also released by Night of the Vinyl Dead in May 2006 as a double black vinyl with a colour insert. Limited to 500 hand-numbered copies.

Under the influence of the free market-oriented neoliberal "Chicago Boys", the military government implemented economic liberalization, including currency stabilization, removed tariff protections for local industry, banned trade unions and privatized social security and hundreds of state-owned enterprises. These policies produced what has been referred to as the "Miracle of Chile," but critics state that economic inequality dramatically increased and attribute the devastating effects of the 1982 monetary crisis on the Chilean economy to these policies. Speaking at the Conservative Party's annual conference, she also called the Labour government contemptible for allowing his extradition trial to go forward. Thatcher's comments came hours after a British judge excused the former dictator from appearing in court later this week. The ruling came after a doctor testified the general suffered two small strokes last month. For the second day in a row, Margaret Thatcher created a storm in British politics. On Tuesday, the former prime minister lashed out at plans to join the European Union, blaming the continent for all the problems Britain had suffered during her lifetime. On Wednesday, she turned her attention to her former ally Augusto Pinochet, addressing his plight at a rally held in conjunction with the annual Conservative party conference. The meeting was the most eagerly awaited event of the Conservative party conference. The speech was one of Lady Thatcher's first at a Tory conference since she was dumped as party leader in 1990 and marked the culmination of an electrifying return. To the delight of an adoring crowd, the woman known as the Iron Lady accused Britain of leaving Pinochet in the lurch after he saved British lives during the Falkland Islands' War. She went on to say that Pinochet was not on trial for human rights abuses but for defeating communism - comments which sparked a rousing round of applause. She added the Spanish case against the general was fraught with inconsistencies that made a fair trial impossible. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The chance of Senator Pinochet receiving anything resembling what Britain would recognise as justice in a Spanish court is minimal, not least because key witnesses for his defence run the risk of immediate arrest if they set foot on Spanish soil. En 1976, el director español José María Berzosa vino a Santiago con el apoyo del Instituto National de l’Audiovisuel para grabar un documental para la televisión francesa sobre lo que estaba pasando en Chile a tres años del Golpe. Lejos de filmar otro clásico documental de denuncia, Berzosa se adentró en la realidad del país a través de una mirada sobre aspectos extraños o hasta el momento inexplorados, particularmente la propia Junta Militar y los apoyos que encontraba su gestión en la sociedad chilena. El resultado fue el programa "Chili: impressions" (Chile: impresiones), compuesto de cuatro capítulos, transmitidos en Francia en abril y mayo de 1978. El primero de ellos, que presentamos en el sitio hace algunos meses, se tituló "Les pompiers de Santiago" y explora el apoyo con que contaba el gobierno dictatorial entre la oligarquía chilena y las clases medias, a través del seguimiento de la Cuarta Compañía del Cuerpo de Bomberos de Santiago, la "Pompe France". En el segundo capítulo “Voyage au bout de la droite”, Berzosa continúa el “viaje por la derecha chilena” entrevistando al capellán del Ejército, al presidente de la comisión constitucional y a los dirigentes sindicales puestos por la Dictadura. Los últimos dos episodios –“Au Bonheur des Généraux” y “Monsieur le président” – son, sin embargo, los más increíbles. Ahí, Berzosa entrevista por separado y en extenso a los cuatro miembros de la Junta, en sus despachos y en la comodidad de sus hogares, acerca de la realidad de Chile por esos días. Además de las respuestas esperables sobre la necesidad de una autoridad fuerte y de las dificultades políticas y administrativas del gobierno, Berzosa y su asistente Chantal Baudis conducen una entrevista “humana” con cada uno de los Comandantes en Jefe, junto a sus esposas, abordando temas como la felicidad, el arte, la filosofía, los hobbys o la ética. Así, podemos ver a Mendoza refiriéndose a su amor por los caballos y los perros, a Leigh hablando sobre los intelectuales y los autores del “boom”, a Merino pintando al óleo y jugando golf o al mismísimo Pinochet señalando lo que significa para él la felicidad y explicando qué es la “Geopolítica”. El efecto, es un espectáculo fascinante de frases hechas, desfachatada hipocresía y “banalidad del mal”, que Berzosa contrasta hábilmente con imágenes y testimonios de familiares de detenidos desaparecidos, de víctimas de la represión o de trabajadores de a pie, que desmienten el simulacro de tranquilidad y alegría que pintan las autoridades y sus partidarios con sus vidas y declaraciones. En el año 2004, el director español quiso montar una nueva película con el material de las cuatro emisiones, particularmente con aquél de las dos últimas. The arrest of General Pinochet exposed the frightening hatreds between the political left and right in Chile. While the left reminded the world of Pinochet’s horrific crimes, the right demanded that the horrors be put in their proper context. These were not atrocities, the argument runs, but excesses—what hard men do to restore order and economic success in a harsh environment.
In a Santiago theatre the emotional power-play of torture and disappearances finds expression. But their outlet in Chilean politics is stifled. Pinochet may not be in power anymore, but he certainly made sure his legacy would last. He changed the electoral rules so that the right had a stranglehold on the constitution. And though the democracy is flawed, its economy is the healthiest in South America, another side of the Pinochet legacy. Prosperity has sweetened memories. It helps explain why a solid third of the Chilean people still support a man the world reviles. The right has built memorials to the disappeared. Move on says the right. Don’t look back. Build a country for our children to play. But even if they should, can they stifle the anger of Pinochet’s victims?

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte (Valparaíso, 25 de noviembre de 1915-Santiago, 10 de diciembre de 2006) fue un militar chileno que encabezó la dictadura militar de Chile que se desarrolló entre 1973 y 1990, periodo conocido en ese país como Régimen Militar.
Su mandato cuenta con numerosos adeptos de la derecha política, los que destacan la instauración en Chile durante el Régimen Militar de una economía de libre mercado, integrada en la economía mundial y con una fuerte presencia del sector privado. Este cambio de modelo económico conllevó un acelerado crecimiento macroeconómico, que situó a Chile como uno de los países con mayor bonanza económica y con los mayores índices de desarrollo humano en América Latina. Por otra parte, dicho modelo también profundizó la concentración de riqueza y aumentó las desigualdades socioeconómicas del país.
Durante la dictadura se cometieron graves y diversas violaciones de los derechos humanos, razón por la cual ha sido criticada tanto en su país como en el resto del mundo. Pinochet debió enfrentar diversos procesos judiciales, algunos de los cuales fueron sobreseídos en vida por diversas razones, mientras que otros lo fueron a causa de su fallecimiento antes de que se dictara una resolución definitiva.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte (25 November 1915 – 10 December 2006) was a Chilean general, politician and the military ruler of Chile between 1973 and 1990; he remained the Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army until 1998. He was also president of the Government Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981. His rule of Chile was a dictatorship.
Under the influence of the free market-oriented neoliberal "Chicago Boys", the military government implemented economic liberalization, including currency stabilization, removed tariff protections for local industry, banned trade unions and privatized social security and hundreds of state-owned enterprises. These policies produced what has been referred to as the "Miracle of Chile," but critics state that economic inequality dramatically increased and attribute the devastating effects of the 1982 monetary crisis on the Chilean economy to these policies. Chile was, for most of the 1990s, the best-performing economy in Latin America, though the legacy of Pinochet's reforms continues to be in dispute.

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has said former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet will get nothing more than a "show trial" if extradited to Spain.
Speaking at the Conservative Party's annual conference, she also called the Labour government contemptible for allowing his extradition trial to go forward.
Thatcher's comments came hours after a British judge excused the former dictator from appearing in court later this week.
The ruling came after a doctor testified the general suffered two small strokes last month.
For the second day in a row, Margaret Thatcher created a storm in British politics.
On Tuesday, the former prime minister lashed out at plans to join the European Union, blaming the continent for all the problems Britain had suffered during her lifetime.
On Wednesday, she turned her attention to her former ally Augusto Pinochet, addressing his plight at a rally held in conjunction with the annual Conservative party conference.
The meeting was the most eagerly awaited event of the Conservative party conference.
The speech was one of Lady Thatcher's first at a Tory conference since she was dumped as party leader in 1990 and marked the culmination of an electrifying return.
To the delight of an adoring crowd, the woman known as the Iron Lady accused Britain of leaving Pinochet in the lurch after he saved British lives during the Falkland Islands' War.
She went on to say that Pinochet was not on trial for human rights abuses but for defeating
communism - comments which sparked a rousing round of applause.
She added the Spanish case against the general was fraught with inconsistencies that made a fair trial impossible.

"The chance of Senator Pinochet receiving anything resembling what Britain would recognise as justice in a Spanish court is minimal, not least because key witnesses for his defence run the risk of immediate arrest if they set foot on Spanish soil. The rally in Blackpool was also attended by Pinochet's son, who took the podium to shake the hand of the woman he said had become the public face of his father's defence.
Baroness Thatcher has been a longtime friend of the former dictator.
She maintains he saved hundreds of British lives during the Falkland War by using Chilean radar to give the British early warning of Argentine air raids.

En 1976, el director español José María Berzosa vino a Santiago con el apoyo del Instituto National de l’Audiovisuel para grabar un documental para la televisión francesa sobre lo que estaba pasando en Chile a tres años del Golpe. Lejos de filmar otro clásico documental de denuncia, Berzosa se adentró en la realidad del país a través de una mirada sobre aspectos extraños o hasta el momento inexplorados, particularmente la propia Junta Militar y los apoyos que encontraba su gestión en la sociedad chilena. El resultado fue el programa "Chili: impressions" (Chile: impresiones), compuesto de cuatro capítulos, transmitidos en Francia en abril y mayo de 1978.
El primero de ellos, que presentamos en el sitio hace algunos meses, se tituló "Les pompiers de Santiago" y explora el apoyo con que contaba el gobierno dictatorial entre la oligarquía chilena y las clases medias, a través del seguimiento de la Cuarta Compañía del Cuerpo de Bomberos de Santiago, la "Pompe France".
En el segundo capítulo “Voyage au bout de la droite”, Berzosa continúa el “viaje por la derecha chilena” entrevistando al capellán del Ejército, al presidente de la comisión constitucional y a los dirigentes sindicales puestos por la Dictadura.
Los últimos dos episodios –“Au Bonheur des Généraux” y “Monsieur le président” – son, sin embargo, los más increíbles. Ahí, Berzosa entrevista por separado y en extenso a los cuatro miembros de la Junta, en sus despachos y en la comodidad de sus hogares, acerca de la realidad de Chile por esos días. Además de las respuestas esperables sobre la necesidad de una autoridad fuerte y de las dificultades políticas y administrativas del gobierno, Berzosa y su asistente Chantal Baudis conducen una entrevista “humana” con cada uno de los Comandantes en Jefe, junto a sus esposas, abordando temas como la felicidad, el arte, la filosofía, los hobbys o la ética. Así, podemos ver a Mendoza refiriéndose a su amor por los caballos y los perros, a Leigh hablando sobre los intelectuales y los autores del “boom”, a Merino pintando al óleo y jugando golf o al mismísimo Pinochet señalando lo que significa para él la felicidad y explicando qué es la “Geopolítica”.
El efecto, es un espectáculo fascinante de frases hechas, desfachatada hipocresía y “banalidad del mal”, que Berzosa contrasta hábilmente con imágenes y testimonios de familiares de detenidos desaparecidos, de víctimas de la represión o de trabajadores de a pie, que desmienten el simulacro de tranquilidad y alegría que pintan las autoridades y sus partidarios con sus vidas y declaraciones.
En el año 2004, el director español quiso montar una nueva película con el material de las cuatro emisiones, particularmente con aquél de las dos últimas. El resultado fue la película que hoy presentamos: “Pinochet y sus tres generales”.

Muel, quien formara parte del afamado grupo Medvedkine, junto a Chris Marker y Jean-Luc Godard, entre otros, capturó uno de los retratos más poderosos de los primeros días de la Dictadura. Profundamente solidario con la causa socialista, Muel y su equipo mostraron gran audacia al mezclar el registro de las triunfantes imágenes oficiales con aquellas, clandestinas, de la naciente oposición.
La cinta incluye los testimonios de Isabel Allende y de algunos militantes de la Unidad Popular que relatan sus experiencias frente a la salvaje represión de esos primeros días. Muel filmó también imágenes al interior del campo de prisioneros del Estadio Nacional así como del funeral de Pablo Neruda, probablemente la primera manifestación pública de la oposición al régimen.

On Tuesday, the former prime minister lashed out at plans to join the European Union, blaming the continent for all the problems Britain had suffered during her lifetime.
On Wednesday, she turned her attention to her former ally Augusto Pinochet, addressing his plight at a rally held in conjunction with the annual Conservative party conference.
The meeting was the most eagerly awaited event of the Conservative party conference.
The speech was one of Lady Thatcher's first at a Tory conference since she was dumped as party leader in 1990 and marked the culmination of an electrifying return.
To the delight of an adoring crowd, the woman known as the Iron Lady accused Britain of leaving Pinochet in the lurch after he saved British lives during the Falkland Islands' War.
She went on to say that Pinochet was not on trial for human rights abuses but for defeating
communism - comments which sparked a rousing round of applause.
She added the Spanish case against the general was fraught with inconsistencies that made a fair trial impossible.

"The chance of Senator Pinochet receiving anything resembling what Britain would recognise as justice in a Spanish court is minimal, not least because key witnesses for his defence run the risk of immediate arrest if they set foot on Spanish soil. Axel Kaiser gives a rarely heard perspective on the social unrest, communist subversion and agitation happening at the time. This was happening through the actions of both radical militants and the Marxist lead government in Chile during the early 1970’s. This pressure from both the bottom and the top lead to the military coup by Augusto Pinochet. The left has successfully sold the myth that Allende was a legitimate, democratically elected leader who was implementing progressive reforms to help the poor exploited masses, and when US corporate interests were threatened the United States conspired and singlehandedly organized a coup. The truth is much more complicated, and when it comes to Allende, more sinister. Allende was a Soviet agent funded by the KGB to lead Chile to socialism, and was also in league the communist regime in Cuba. Tune in for this rarely heard, yet true perspective of a pivotal event in Latin American history, cited by many, but understood by few.

A former deputy commander-in-chief of the Chilean army has spoken out against the detention of Augusto Pinochet.
In an interview with APTN, Rafael Villarroel said the detention of the former Chilean dictator by British authorities was a "cowardly act".
On Sunday, British media had revealed that the aging former dictator had told his family and close friends that he was resigned to dying in Britain.
"If this is the last thing I'll have to do, so be it," the Sunday Telegraph reported Augusto Pinochet as saying.
Former army commander Rafael Villarroel visited the general on Saturday and said he found his former boss in good health.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"He is behaving like a soldier of the Chilean army. He is calm but he is expectant that justice will be done with this case. That is what I think is more or less the situation. And this is what any of us can expect."

On Monday, Britain's Law Lords rehear the former dictator's appeal for immunity from prosecution.
If the appeal fails, Pinochet faces extradition to Spain to face charges of genocide, torture and kidnapping.

"If a situation of this kind is created (if judges find Pinochet guilty), the case will be delayed further and I think that this will be bad for the future. It could result in many things. Among them, this could include a worsening of the general's health. You have to remember that the general, here, in Great Britain, and forgive me for speaking so frankly, was suddenly detained. He was ill. He was coming out of anaesthetic following his operation. This was a cowardly act. Forgive me for saying this."

Villarroel was speaking as hundreds of anti-Pinochet supporters staged a rally in the centre of London, where they demanded that the former dictator be tried for genocide.

"There are Chileans, and there are Chileans. These people, who are screaming out there, many of them do not know Chile. There are no exiles, no exiles, and so why are they here? Nobody is an exile. There are people who have come here and have raised families. These people are not exiles. Others do not know Chile. Others, if you look closely, are at every demonstration, because they are paid for this. Leftist organizations have a lot of money. They have the means for propaganda. They have carried out this propaganda for twenty-five years. This march is more to do with putting pressure on what will take place tomorrow."

Pinochet's case has created strong emotions on both sides of the Atlantic.
Many Chileans against placing him on trial have flown into Britain this weekend in time for Monday's hearing.

"All that we want, without a single exception, or a high percentage anyway, is that Pinochet returns to Chile. This will return the situation to normal. If you gave me the opportunity to say this throughout Europe, I would tell this to whoever is willing to listen."

During Pinochet's 17-year dictatorship, more than three-thousand people died or disappeared at the hands of the secret police, the Dina.
