A biological product from Bayer can help the crops. What nematodes mean to farmers is explained by Nihal Yildirim, a sweet pepper farmer from Turkey.
So, what is a nematode? Nematodes are animals, worms to be precise, and numerous ones at that. Experts estimate there are more than a million different species of nematodes. In fact, 4 out of every 5 animals are nematodes making them the most numerically abundant animals on the planet - by a lot. They can be found absolutely everywhere from the deepest part of the ocean to the top of the highest mountain.

Parasitic Nematode Worm. Emerged out of belly of 5th instar monarch larva and eventually split into three separate worms. Interesting movement/locomotion. Both dried out and died within a day of emergence.

I had an outbreak this year with 7 total larva infected with a nematode worm, I've only had two others in 17 years of raising so it seemed abnormal.
Six were fifth instar, one was a third instar! Larva and worm both dried out and died within hours. One larva lived for two days but would not eat.
All of the worms appeared to come out of the ventral region of the larva. I'm not sure if they all started as one worm and then split, or if there were two or three separate worms inside. With watching I feel that some of them split from one worm and each went separate ways eventually in the container.
Most were collected from the same Milkweed site, that had a healthy larva population but not enough milkweed to sustain them. So I gathered milkweed leaves from a separate site that has NEVER had monarchs to feed and rear them. I wonder if the adults can "taste" the presence of the worm in the plants so they never lay eggs in that milkweed patch. Or maybe it's chemicals the plants give off, because I've never actually seen a monarch anywhere near this patch though it's right on a migration pathway.
Someone suggested they get the worm from the soil when they leave the plant to go from 4th to 5th instar. But several of mine were collected as 3rd or 4th instar and theoretically never touched the ground as an older instar. So can I assume they get the worm from the plant matter or while on the plant?
I have specimens of the worm preserved in alcohol.

Fish samples are collected from Lower Manair Dam and identified more number of nematode parasites in the fish body cavity. The live parasites penetrate from the body cavity and coming out ventral side in between the pelvic fin and Anal fin at the time of fish died. In live and active fishes the parasites freely move on the Intestine, Liver, Gonads etc,.

Panagrolaimidae nematode infection in theraphosid spider Poecilotheria (Araneae: Theraphosidae). All infections caused by these parasites are fatal. Still, there is no cure for this type of disease. Careful examination and quarantine of the newly bought spiders and feeder insects are the best way of prevention.
Spider died before dissection. Killed by the nematodes or/and their symbiotic bacteria.

This video shows the whiplike motion of a Nematode worm. Nematodes have a strong cuticle that surrounds their bodies allowing for a high internal pressure which creates an internal hydrostatic skeleton. In other words their bodies want to remain straight. The worms have longitudinal muscles that run lengthwise on their bodies that they flex allowing them to whip back and forth to propel themselves forward. Other worms have circular muscles as well which allows them to inch along (called peristalsis).

The nematodes /ˈnɛmətoʊdz/ or roundworms constitute the phylum Nematoda. They are a diverse animal phylum inhabiting a very broad range of environments. Nematode species can be difficult to distinguish, and although over 25,000 have been described, of which more than half are parasitic, the total number of nematode species has been estimated to be about 1 million. Unlike the phyla Cnidarians and Platyhelminthes (flatworms), nematodes have tubular digestive systems with openings at both ends.
Nematodes have successfully adapted to nearly every ecosystem from marine (salt water) to fresh water, to soils, and from the polar regions to the tropics, as well as the highest to the lowest of elevations. They are ubiquitous in freshwater, marine, and terrestrial environments, where they often outnumber other animals in both individual and species counts, and are found in locations as diverse as mountains, deserts and oceanic trenches. They are found in every part of the earth's lithosphere. They represent 90% of all animals on the ocean floor. Parasitic Nematode Worm. Emerged out of belly of 5th instar monarch larva and eventually split into three separate worms. Interesting movement/locomotion. Both dried out and died within a day of emergence.

I had an outbreak this year with 7 total larva infected with a nematode worm, I've only had two others in 17 years of raising so it seemed abnormal.
Six were fifth instar, one was a third instar! Larva and worm both dried out and died within hours. One larva lived for two days but would not eat.
All of the worms appeared to come out of the ventral region of the larva. I'm not sure if they all started as one worm and then split, or if there were two or three separate worms inside. With watching I feel that some of them split from one worm and each went separate ways eventually in the container.
Most were collected from the same Milkweed site, that had a healthy larva population but not enough milkweed to sustain them. So I gathered milkweed leaves from a separate site that has NEVER had monarchs to feed and rear them. I wonder if the adults can "taste" the presence of the worm in the plants so they never lay eggs in that milkweed patch. Or maybe it's chemicals the plants give off, because I've never actually seen a monarch anywhere near this patch though it's right on a migration pathway.
Someone suggested they get the worm from the soil when they leave the plant to go from 4th to 5th instar. But several of mine were collected as 3rd or 4th instar and theoretically never touched the ground as an older instar. So can I assume they get the worm from the plant matter or while on the plant?
I have specimens of the worm preserved in alcohol.

Have you ever wondered how horrible it would be to have a parasite living in your eye? This is what happened to this man from Colorado. A nematode called the Onchocerca sp infected the anterior eye chamber of this patient.
The nematode was surgically removed, extracted alive and identified as Onchocerca. After the surgery the man fully recovered without any complications from the surgery.
Zoonotic helminths that affect human eyes including nematodes, cestodes and trematodes can cause severe consequences to the human host. Blindness has resulted from the parasitic infection.

The worms have longitudinal muscles that run lengthwise on their bodies that they flex allowing them to whip back and forth to propel themselves forward.
