The Arctic Circle is one of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the Earth. As of 16 January 2016, it runs 66°33′46.1″ north of the Equator.
The region north of this circle is known as the Arctic, and the zone just to the south is called the Northern Temperate Zone. The equivalent polar circle in the Southern Hemisphere is called the Antarctic Circle.
The Arctic Circle is the southernmost latitude in the Northern Hemisphere at which the sun can remain continuously above or below the horizon for 24 hours (at the June solstice and December solstice respectively). North of the Arctic Circle, the sun is above the horizon for 24 continuous hours at least once per year (and therefore visible at midnight) and below the horizon for 24 continuous hours at least once per year (and therefore not visible at noon). On the Arctic Circle those events occur, in principle, exactly once per year, at the June and December solstices, respectively. However, in actuality, because of atmospheric refraction and mirages, and because the sun appears as a disk and not a point, part of the midnight sun may be seen on the night of the northern summer solstice up to about 50 minutes (′) (90 km (56 mi)) south of the Arctic Circle; similarly, on the day of the northern winter solstice, part of the sun may be seen up to about 50′ north of the Arctic Circle. That is true at sea level; those limits increase with elevation above sea level, although in mountainous regions there is often no direct view of the true horizon.
The Arctic (/ˈɑːrktɪk/ or /ˈɑːrtɪk/) is a polar region located at the northernmost part of the Earth. The Arctic consists of the Arctic Ocean and parts of Alaska (United States), Canada, Finland, Greenland (Denmark), Iceland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden. The Arctic region consists of a vast ocean with a seasonally varying ice cover, surrounded by treeless permafrost. The area can be defined as north of the Arctic Circle (66° 33'N), the approximate limit of the midnight sun and the polar night. Alternatively, it can be defined as the region where the average temperature for the warmest month (July) is below 10 °C (50 °F); the northernmost tree line roughly follows the isotherm at the boundary of this region.
Socially and politically, the Arctic region includes the northern territories of the eight Arctic states, although by natural science definitions, much of this territory is considered subarctic. The Arctic region is a unique area among Earth's ecosystems. For example, the cultures in the region and the Arctic indigenous peoples have adapted to its cold and extreme conditions. In recent years, the extent of the sea ice has declined. Life in the Arctic includes organisms living in the ice, zooplankton and phytoplankton, fish and marine mammals, birds, land animals, plants and human societies.
A circle is a simple shape in Euclidean geometry. It is the set of all points in a plane that are at a given distance from a given point, the centre; equivalently it is the curve traced out by a point that moves so that its distance from a given point is constant. The distance between any of the points and the centre is called the radius.
A circle is a simple closed curve which divides the plane into two regions: an interior and an exterior. In everyday use, the term "circle" may be used interchangeably to refer to either the boundary of the figure, or to the whole figure including its interior; in strict technical usage, the circle is only the boundary and the whole figure is called a disk.
A circle may also be defined as a special ellipse in which the two foci are coincident and the eccentricity is 0, or the two-dimensional shape enclosing the most area per unit perimeter squared, using calculus of variations.

Welcome aboard the legendary "Academician Keldysh”, a research vessel that has played a big part in many scientific projects. Built in 1980, she has 17 laboratories and now, she also carries two self-propelled submersibles for submarine exploration. She is a huge ship with over 40 crew members, and is constantly working to provide various scientific groups with both a home and a workplace. Scientists consider it an honour to sail aboard the highly respected “Keldysh”. A voyage on board the "Keldysh" is indeed a life-experience. Crew members and scientists live like a big family. In the open waters, they get to experience the raw forces of nature and the rough beauty of the sea. Traditionally, first time passengers or crew, when crossing the Arctic Circle, have to drink the salty waters o...

Bear Grylls Man vs Wild S04E01 - Arctic Circle
The real reason for the DEW (distant early warning) line and the "cold war". Just as at the south pole, there is a high level of military control over a truly neutral area, especially when one remembers that both the U.S and Russia are really run by the same people. "Lord Of The Rings, The Ring(s?) Of Power" They control the 'outer ring' of the "antarctic" and the innermost ring, the north pole. Located in Russia, Greenland, Canada and of course Alaska, HAAARP, the High Altitude Active Aurora Research Program sites are conveniently located at four main stations around the inner arctic circle, (imagine looking straight down at earth ie. the Azimuthal Equidistant map at the small circle of the North Pole with four dots around the small circle). The temperature in the Arctic Circle is rising faster than anywhere else on Earth and the sea ice is shrinking at record levels. Scientists are forecasting that the first ice-free summer in the Arctic Ocean could be within the next 25 to 40 years. The impact, both natural and economic, will be massive. However, there is still great uncertainty about the future climatic, weather and environmental conditions facing the Arctic region. Join David Eades from BBC World and our panel of experts as they discuss the key challenges presented by the rapidly changing climate in the Arctic Circle: - President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson - Director of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Petteri Taalas - Director of the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine research, Karin Lochte - Pres...

Solotrekkingtour Arctic circle trail August 2014
Sailing to the unfriendly regions of the North.
Some whales were following us, making sounds of warning.
The curious giants were playing with each other,
Spying on the expedition's ships.
The Arctic Circle closed its arms around our fate.
We are sealed on this central ocean.
We have settled on the frozen zone of the tundra.
Blinding days, snowing with out end.
The winter months are furiously approaching.
The pole will turn his white back to the sun.
The Arctic Circle closed its arms around our fate.
