Peter "Pete" Seeger (May 3, 1919 – January 27, 2014) was an American folk singer and activist. A fixture on nationwide radio in the 1940s, he also had a string of hit records during the early 1950s as a member of the Weavers, most notably their recording of Lead Belly's "Goodnight, Irene", which topped the charts for 13 weeks in 1950. Members of the Weavers were blacklisted during the McCarthy Era. In the 1960s, he re-emerged on the public scene as a prominent singer of protest music in support of international disarmament, civil rights, counterculture and environmental causes.
A prolific songwriter, his best-known songs include "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (with Joe Hickerson), "If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)" (with Lee Hays of the Weavers), and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" (lyrics adapted from Ecclesiastes), which have been recorded by many artists both in and outside the folk revival movement and are sung throughout the world. "Flowers" was a hit recording for the Kingston Trio (1962); Marlene Dietrich, who recorded it in English, German and French (1962); and Johnny Rivers (1965). "If I Had a Hammer" was a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary (1962) and Trini Lopez (1963), while the Byrds had a number one hit with "Turn! Turn! Turn!" in 1965.
Pete is a diminutive form of the name Peter.

"If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)" is a song written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays. It was written in 1949 in support of the progressive movement, and was first recorded by The Weavers, a folk music quartet composed of Seeger, Hays, Ronnie Gilbert and Fred Hellerman. It was a number 10 hit for Peter, Paul and Mary in 1962 and then went to number three a year later when recorded by Trini Lopez.
The Weavers released the song under the title "The Hammer Song" as a 78 single in March 1950 on Hootenanny Records, 101-A, backed with "Banks of Marble".
The song was first performed publicly by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays on June 3, 1949, at St. Nicholas Arena in New York at a testimonial dinner for the leaders of the Communist Party of the United States, who were then on trial in federal court, charged with violating the Smith Act by advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government. It was not particularly successful in commercial terms when it was first released. It was part of the three songs Seeger played as the warm-up act for Paul Robeson's September 4 concert near Peekskill, New York, which subsequently erupted into a riot.
The Slim Shady LP is the second studio album by American rapper Eminem, and also his first on a major label. It was released on February 23, 1999, under Interscope Records and Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment. Recorded in Ferndale, Michigan following Eminem's recruitment by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, the album features production from Dr. Dre, the Bass Brothers, and Eminem himself. The majority of the record's lyrical content is written from the perspective of the rapper's alter ego Slim Shady, whom the rapper created on Slim Shady EP (1997). The lyrics are noted for their over-the-top depictions of violence and heavy use of profanity.
The album was met with both critical and commercial success; critics praised Eminem for his unique lyrical style, and the record debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart behind TLC's FanMail with 283,000 copies sold in its opening week. The first official single, "Just Don't Give a Fuck", did not enter the "Billboard" Hot 100 but at least did enter the "Bubbling Under" Hot 100, peaking at number 14, which is equivalent to 114. The second official single, "My Name Is", peaked at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first entry on that chart. The Slim Shady LP went on to be certified quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The record won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, and in 2012, the album was ranked number 275 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

On July 26, 1956, the House of Representatives voted 373 to 9 to cite Pete Seeger and seven others (including playwright Arthur Miller) for contempt, as they failed to cooperate with House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in their attempts to investigate alleged subversives and communists. Pete Seeger testified before the HUAC in 1955. In one of Pete's darkest moments, when his personal freedom, his career, and his safety were in jeopardy, a flash of inspiration ignited this song. The song was stirred by a passage from Mikhail Sholokhov's novel "And Quie Flows the Don". Around the world the song traveled and in 1962 at a UNICEF concert in Germany, Marlene Dietrich, Academy Award-nominated German-born American actress, first performed the song in French, as "Qui peut dire ou vont l...
Today, May 3 2009, is Pete Seeger's 90th birthday. I can't make the big concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate it, so this is my small tribute to him, an amazing man with an amazing wife, and an amazing life. This was performed at the "We Are One" Presidential Inaugural Concert, January 19, 2009. The song was written by Woodie Guthrie in 1940, first recorded by him in 1944 at Folkway Records, but not released until 1951. My favorite song by Pete Seeger. Even after all these years the song still holds true.
Folksinger & activist Pete Seeger is one of three people featured in Michael & Philip Burton's 1961 film "Wasn't That A Time" which tells of the often devastating impact of the House Un-American Activities Committee's targeting of individuals they deemed "subversive" during the 1950s Cold War. You can read Seeger's 1955 testimony to HUAC here http://www.peteseeger.net/HUAC.htm Michael Burton very generously gave Appalshop use of a selection of the film that includes Carl and Anne Braden, also targeted by HUAC, for our documentary "Anne Braden: Southern Patriot" by Anne Lewis & Mimi Pickering. As McCarthyism gripped America in the post-World War II era, many Americans scrambled to appear as non-dissenting as possible. Pete Seeger was not one of them. As a former member of the Young Communists' League, he was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1955. In this clip, Seeger remembers how he felt during the 1950s and 1960s, when he was confronted by intimidation and censorship. More on remembering Pete Seeger at BillMoyers.com: http://bit.ly/1bd107o
In this clip, Seeger says that music has a power that — even after decades of playing it — he still doesn’t fully understand. “All I know,” he says, “is that throughout history, the leaders of countries have been very particular about what songs they want sung, so some people, beside me, must think songs do something.” There are more people working to change the world every day, he says, and eventually they’ll be numerous enough to tip the scales.

An iconic member of the Marin community, Dillon is a longtime resident of Mill Valley. He not only gives back to his community, he brings life and spirit to it. Dillon grew up in LA and Michigan, listening to Elvis, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles and such great Chicago bluesmen from across Lake Michigan as Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and BB King. He formed his first band, the Fugitives at age 15 and went on to master many styles—from Blues to Bop to Rock to Reggae, as well as rockabilly, Latin, funk and country music. He was a founding member of the Ska-driven band, The Edge, widely regarded throughout the 1980's as "Marin County's House Band". In addition to releasin...
When I made these little poems more than a year ago and put them up on YouTube using PhotoStory in a most primitive way, I thought their tone might be a bit too strident and their relevance perhaps short-lived. I now see I was wrong on both counts. And so I decided to share them with my new friends on VIMEO. I also can't help but wonder about the disparity in the number of views between those who looked at this clip on Vimeo (77) and those who checked it out on YouTube (over 30,000). It may only be that Pete Seeger has a bigger audience on YT, but it nevertheless means a good portion of those 30,000 who listened to Pete were also subjected to the Placard Poems. I can live with that.
This is the short I did for the Electric Projected event that was held in Beacon, NY on October 1, 2011. The animations were projected onto a massive abandoned electric blanket factory in downtown Beacon, with each filmmaker drawing their inspiration from a chosen mural that occupies each window. Each animation began and ended with its respective origin window, as we were given a template of the building from which to construct the animation in relation to the architecture. I chose the mural "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" by Cern and Elia Gurna, who created the work onsite at the 2010 Electric Windows Event. I was drawn to the creepy characters and texture of the mural, as well as to the fatalistic, anti-war narrative of the original song by Pete Seeger. Plus I just loved getting to an...

One of the joys of interviewing and writing on the artists I cover over the years is how many of them continue to evolve and progress throughout their careers. Vocalist and Nneka is one who will be an artist that will continue to not only grow as an artist but thrive on taking her natural born talent to put her music to help empower and uplift music fans who endure the struggle and atrocities in their environment. This sister comes from the great ancestors of musicians that speak the truth of the struggle like Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Chuck D, and KRS-One. Nneka’s 3rd American release “Soul Is Heavy” picks up where her last disc “Concrete Jungle” leaves off. Nneka's live performances are indeed authentic and personal just like her recordings. She was just in the Un...

A historic biography about the poet of protest music in America This four-hour biography of Bob Dylan, directed by Martin Scorsese, synthesizes rare and raw footage of Dylan’s entry onto the music scene in the early 1960s. This film about the reclusive poet-singer who rose to fame during the protest era held together by a single long, reflective interview with Dylan. The documentary also includes interviews with seminal popular musicians, music producers and towering cultural figures who knew Dylan well, including Allen Ginsberg, Joan Baez, Peter Yarrow, and Pete Seeger. Telling the story of the coming of age of an iconic musician, it is a portrait of an existential man bursting with metaphors and compelled to sing them out loud. It is also a story about alienation that illuminates a pe...

Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie in concert in the mid 1970s. Here they lead an old fashioned spiritual with the audience joining in.
union song
RIP Pete Seeger May 3, 1919 -- January 27, 2014, Toshi Seeger July 1, 1922 -- July 9, 2013 Discussion, pro and anti Seeger, this song, government, whatever, etc is allowed.
Every Halloween, I carve into a pumpkin the likeness of a musician who died since the previous Halloween. The tradition began in 2008, and each jack-o-lantern is carved in 3D-style. For 2014, it's Pete Seeger. See more here: shawnfeeney.com/jackolanterns
Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Celebration - "Ain't Gonna Work on Maggie's Farm No More" featuring Kris Kristofferson, Warren Haynes, Richie Havens, Taj Mahal, Ramblin' Jack Elliot & Del McCoury and others - Madison Square Garden, NYC on May 3, 2009
Chorus:
Seventy miles of wind and spray,
Seventy miles of water,
Seventy miles of open bay--
It's a garbage dump.
What's that stinky creek out there,
Down behind the slum's back stair
Sludgy puddle, sad and gray?
Why man, that's San Francisco Bay.
(CHORUS)
Big Solano and the Montecelle'
Ferry boats, I know them well,
Creek and groan in their muddy graves
Remembering San Francisco Bay
(CHORUS)
Joe Ortega and the Spanish crew
Sailed across the ocean blue
Came into the mighty Bay
Stood on the decks and cried, "Ole"
(CHORUS)
Fill it here, fill it here.
Docks and tidelands disappear,
Shaky houses on the quaky ground
The builder, he's Las Vegas bound
(CHORUS)
Dump the garbage in the Bay
City fathers say, "Okay,
When cries of anguish fill the air,
We'll be off on the Riviere."
