It's believed he fired several shots outside the Romantics brothel.

The man fired several shots at the brothel about 9.50am. It which wasn't due to open until 10am.

The man had already fled the Colebrook Street brothel by the time police arrived and no one was injured in the shooting.

Superintendent Tony Langdon said police were still investigating the Taylors Lakes man's connection to the brothel.

He said police and special operations group officers were following the man "at a distance" on the Calder Freeway when he pulled over and emerged from his vehicle with a gunshot wound.

"At this stage it's too early to say what the reason for that is. It's very unusual circumstances."

Superintendent Langdon confirmed the man had shot at a person outside the business who then ran inside.

"We understand he shot at a person. No person was injured and that's very fortunate."

It's believed only one or two people were at the brothel at the time of the incident.

The shot man is in the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition and is yet to be interviewed by police.

"We're trying to establish why he was there and that will form part of our investigation," Mr Langdon said.

He confirmed the man had had dealings with police in the past but that was "some time ago".

More to come.
