Belfast (/ˈbɛl.fɑːst/ or /ˈbɛl.fæst/; from Irish: Béal Feirste, meaning "mouth of the sandbanks") is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. Most of Belfast, including the city centre, is in County Antrim, but parts of East and South Belfast are in County Down. It is on the flood plain of the River Lagan. The city's motto is Pro Tanto Quid Retribuamus (roughly Latin for "what shall we give in return for so much").
By population before the 2015 council reform, Belfast was the 17th largest city in the United Kingdom and the second largest on the island of Ireland. It is the seat of the devolved government and legislative Northern Ireland Assembly. At the time of the 2011 census, the city of Belfast had a population of 286,000. With the 2015 council reform it is 333,871 and lies at the heart of the Belfast Urban area, which has a population of 483,418 and the Belfast Metropolitan Area, which had a population of 579,276 at the 2001 census. The larger urban zone, as defined by the European Union, had an estimated total population of 673,000 on 1 January 2012. Belfast was granted city status in 1888.
Northern Ireland (Irish: Tuaisceart Éireann [ˈt̪ˠuəʃcəɾˠt̪ˠ ˈeːɾʲən̪ˠ]; Ulster Scots: Norlin Airlann) is a constituent unit of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the northeast of the island of Ireland. It is variously described as a country, province, region, or "part" of the United Kingdom, amongst other terms. Northern Ireland shares a border to the south and west with the Republic of Ireland. In 2011, its population was 1,810,863, constituting about 30% of the island's total population and about 3% of the UK's population. Established by the Northern Ireland Act 1998 as part of the Good Friday Agreement, the Northern Ireland Assembly holds responsibility for a range of devolved policy matters, while other areas are reserved for the British government. Northern Ireland co-operates with the Republic of Ireland in some areas, and the Agreement granted the Republic the ability to "put forward views and proposals" with "determined efforts to resolve disagreements between the two governments".
Danae Stratou (Greek: Δανάη Στράτου) is a Greek visual and installation artist and a professor. She was born in Athens in 1964.
Stratou studied fine arts at the St Martins College between 1983 and 1988. She works as a partime professor at the Royal Academy of Fine arts in Athene. She represented Greece at the forty-eights Venice Biennale. She also represented Greece in 2001 at the first Valencia Biennale and in 2004 she represented Greece at Transcultures in Belgium.
Together with three other artists (D.A.ST. Arteam) she created in 2010 Desert Breath in the El Gouna dessert. During that project they created 10 hectares off landscape art.
In 2010 Sratou and her husband Yanis Varoufakis founded the non-profit organisation vital Space. Vital Space is based upon the principle that artworks can change the world for the better.
Her work has been on display in the National Museum of Contemporary Art (Εθνικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης) in Athene. Her works where also on display in museums and private collections in Israel, France, the United States and Egypt.
North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. North is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.
A documentary looking at the IRA's ethnic cleansing campaign being waged against small, vulnerable protestant enclaves in north Belfast, Northern Ireland. Over the past forty years, tens of thousands of protestants have been either murdered or driven from their homes by catholic fundamentalist IRA gangs - who then get catholic families to move into the vacant homes so the protestants can never return. This ethnic cleansing is classed as a war crime in international law - yet no-one has ever been jailed for taking part in it.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Every year on July 12, many Protestants, loyalists, and unionists in Northern Ireland celebrate by lighting huge bonfires and marching through the streets playing music and saluting the Queen. This year, about 50,000 people reportedly took part all over the region. "The Twelfth" is a particularly contentious period in the heavily divided Protestant/Catholic city of Belfast. After decades of conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles — a political and sectarian war that claimed about 3,600 lives — there are still many people on each side who feel oppressed by the other. Riots involving rock throwing, Molotov cocktails, and even gunfire often erupt on or around the Twelfth. Problems are particularly commonplace as ma...
Family's shock at Belfast race attack A Sudanese man, whose family’s home was attacked because of where they are from, has said the incident has shocked him because of the warm welcome they have received from their neighbours. Windows were broken at two homes at Glenrosa Link, sometime around 2.30am on Thursday. No one was injured in the incident, however, police have said the attack was racially motivated. One of the families has lived in Belfast for the past two years while the other family was due to move into the property on Thursday. Mohammed Idris has lived in Belfast with his partner and seven-year-old son for the past two years. He said the noise of the windows being smashed in the early hours of the morning woke him from his sleep. He told UTV: "We were terrified, we were s...
We start in bustling Belfast's City Hall and Ulster Museum, then head out to Northern Ireland's favorite resort: Portrush, along the Antrim Coast, where we taste-test Irish whiskey, scramble over some six-sided geology in the Giant's Causeway, drop in on a world-class golf course, and stomp our feet to some traditional music. © 2004 Rick Steves' Europe

Kevin Kearney-McMillan (27) died when his silver Toyota Supra careered off the road on York Street in Belfast close to its junction with the Limestone Road, colliding with a tree. The north Belfast man had recently become a father again when he died on Friday. Mr Kearney-McMillan's father, Kevin Kearney, was killed by the dissident republican group which calls itself "the IRA" in October 2013 in what police at the time termed as a "callous and cold-blooded murder". His body was found in a lake in Alexandra Park. He had been shot. The 46-year-old father-of-four had left his daughter off at school on Tuesday morning, and returned home to ta...

This summer, sectarian disturbance erupted when the Orange Order marched past the Crumlin Road interface during the Twelfth of July march (actually taking place on the 13th). The Fuse of Peace is a short documentary that dissects the riot that took place and the issues within both communities that surround it. Parading has historically been a divisive element in Belfast and The Fuse of Peace seeks to raise awareness of the damage riots like these have on community relations and the setbacks they can cause to a society that is meant to be moving forward. The Fuse of peace is a film by Will Maloney. Using mattresses to transform a prison cell into a recording studio, a smuggled tape recorder, and look-outs to ensure their success, six prisoners captured the essence of an event that still defines the Republican community today. In 1981 ten Republican volunteers began a hunger strike in Long Kesh prison to regain political status for paramilitary prisoners, and counter the efforts of the British government to criminalize the Republican fight for a united Ireland. Ten years later, their comrades secretly compiled a cassette tape from within the prison to commemorate the hunger strikers’ sacrifice. I met co-producer of ‘Music from the Blocks’ and Officer Commanding during the 1981 hunger strike Brendan ‘Bik’ McFarlane in a pub in Belfast four years ago. I was a sophomore in college,...

I received a text off Conor saying "Skate jam in Belfast tomorrow, the more the merrier". So we decided to head up north to Unit 13 skatepark just before Christmas to see what the craic was. When we got there we were surprised to find out that there was no skate jam but instead a BMX session. Sweet. It was still a good opportunity to use my new camera for the first time and have a little blade. Shot on a Canon 7D with 15mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.4 lenses.
