A short overview of the mathematics behind musical harmonies and music composition using chord progressions
This is a discussion on Bach's method of musical composition. Classical music isn't just another style, or "period" of music. What is shown in this video (full video found: http://larouchepac.com/node/24707 ), is that Bach learned a method based on the scientific discoveries of Johannes Kepler (found: http://larouchepac.com/narrowpath, and http://schillerinstitute.com/music/revolution.html# Introduction-).
Just to be provocative, compare what you hear in this preliminary discussion to the "philosophers" of modern composition, like Theodore Adorno, who wrote in "The Philosophy of Modern Music", "What radical music perceives is the untransfigured suffering of man.... The seismographic registration of traumatic shock becomes, at the same time, the technical structural law of music. It forbids continuity and development. Musical language is polarized according to its extreme; towards gestures of shock resembling bodily convulsions on the one hand, and on the other towards a crystalline standstill of a human being whom anxiety causes to freeze in her tracks.... Modern music sees absolute oblivion as its goal. It is the surviving message of despair from the shipwrecked."
"It is not that schizophrenia is directly expressed therein; but the music imprints upon itself an attitude similar to that of the mentally ill. The individual brings about his own disintegration.... He imagines the fulfillment of the promise through magic, but nonetheless within the realm of immediate actuality.... What is meant by "radical music"? The composers like Arnold Schoenberg, Bertolt Brecht, George Gershwin, Atonalism, movie music, etc, etc.

In this lesson for beginners, I will teach you how to write your first song. Learning to write music also known as music composition is a good skill to have, even as a singer or instrumentalist. I find that knowing how to play piano is the most useful since it is easy to visualize the chords and melody. After the lesson, you should check out these videos which will help you better understand chord progressions and key signatures.

Before we write our song, we will review some important topics such as melody, harmony, chords, chord progressions, and some of the basic rules of writing music. There is obviously a lot more to writing music than what is covered in the lesson, but this is a great first lesson for those who have limited experience with composition. Remember that a melody is read from left to right (the part of the song you recognize and hum to yourself), and harmony is the supporting chords and is read up and down. A scale tells you all of the notes that exist in a key. You can build chords on each note of the scale, so you have 7 unique chords just like you have 7 unique notes in a scale. The combination of chords you use is known as a chord progression. One of the most common chords progressions when making a song is I, IV , V, I.

The episode is part one of a new series called "How To Harmonize a Melody" where I will demonstrate Tonal, Linear, Bitonal, Modal and Polytonal techniques. There are rules of counterpoint that were established during the common practice period from 1600-1900 that you can apply Roman Numeral analysis to but only if you want to copy the styles of the masters of those eras.These rules were broken 100 years ago by people like Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. If you want to chart a new course, you must find new rules! I will save common practice videos for the right time but that's not now.
I this episode I harmonize a simple 5 note melody G-Bb-Eb-G-F with Linear, Tonal, Bitonal and Polytonal examples.

Musical composition
Musical composition can refer to an original piece of music, the structure of a musical piece, or the process of creating a new piece of music. People who practice composition are called composers.
Although today composition is considered to consist of the manipulation of each aspect of music (harmony, melody, form, rhythm, and timbre), according to Jean-Benjamin de Laborde (1780, 2:12):
Musical compositions
A piece of music exists in the form of a composition in musical notation or as a single acoustic event (a live performance or recorded track). If composed before being performed, music can be performed from memory, through written musical notation, or through a combination of both. Compositions comprise musical elements, which vary widely from person to person and between cultures. Improvisation is the act of composing musical elements spontaneously during the performance.
Piece is a "general, non-technical term [that began to be] applied mainly to instrumental compositions from the 17th century onwards....other than when they are taken individually 'piece' and its equivalents are rarely used of movements in sonatas or symphonies....composers have used all these terms [in their different languages] frequently in compound forms [e.g. Klavierstück]....In vocal music...the term is most frequently used for operatic ensembles..."

In this lesson for beginners, I will teach you how to write your first song. Learning to write music also known as music composition is a good skill to have, even as a singer or instrumentalist. I find that knowing how to play piano is the most useful since it is easy to visualize the chords and melody. After the lesson, you should check out these videos which will help you better understand chord progressions and key signatures.

Before we write our song, we will review some important topics such as melody, harmony, chords, chord progressions, and some of the basic rules of writing music. There is obviously a lot more to writing music than what is covered in the lesson, but this is a great first lesson for those who have limited experience with composition. Remember that a melody is read from left to right (the part of the song you recognize and hum to yourself), and harmony is the supporting chords and is read up and down. A scale tells you all of the notes that exist in a key. You can build chords on each note of the scale, so you have 7 unique chords just like you have 7 unique notes in a scale. The combination of chords you use is known as a chord progression. One of the most common chords progressions when making a song is I, IV , V, I.

The episode is part one of a new series called "How To Harmonize a Melody" where I will demonstrate Tonal, Linear, Bitonal, Modal and Polytonal techniques. There are rules of counterpoint that were established during the common practice period from 1600-1900 that you can apply Roman Numeral analysis to but only if you want to copy the styles of the masters of those eras.These rules were broken 100 years ago by people like Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. If you want to chart a new course, you must find new rules! I will save common practice videos for the right time but that's not now.

Before we write our song, we will review some important topics such as melody, harmony, chords, chord progressions, and some of the basic rules of writing music. There is obviously a lot more to writing music than what is covered in the lesson, but this is a great first lesson for those who have limited experience with composition. Remember that a melody is read from left to right (the part of the song you recognize and hum to yourself), and harmony is the supporting chords and is read up and down. A scale tells you all of the notes that exist in a key. You can build chords on each note of the scale, so you have 7 unique chords just like you have 7 unique notes in a scale. The combination of chords you use is known as a chord progression. One of the most common chords progressions when making a song is I, IV , V, I.

The episode is part one of a new series called "How To Harmonize a Melody" where I will demonstrate Tonal, Linear, Bitonal, Modal and Polytonal techniques. There are rules of counterpoint that were established during the common practice period from 1600-1900 that you can apply Roman Numeral analysis to but only if you want to copy the styles of the masters of those eras.These rules were broken 100 years ago by people like Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. About Mark Cross:
Mark Cross is an award-winning producer, composer, mixer, educator, and author with an extensive discography in both film and television that spans over two decades.
As an engineer and mixer, Mark has worked on numerous projects, including the Grammy -winning Shelby Lynne album I Am Shelby Lynne, Randy Newman's Oscar-nominated and Grammy-winning soundtrack for the Disney-Pixar film Cars, the Meet the Parents original film score and soundtracks, and hundreds of episodes of the NBC prime time series ER. Mark’s additional film credits include Alien: Resurrection, Seabiscuit, and Beavis and Butthead Do America.
As a composer, Mark has created over a thousand registered tracks for use in hundreds of films and television shows worldwide. He was the lead composer for the NBC prime time series Last Comic Standing and has contributed additional music for American Idol, Curb Your Enthusiasm, the CBS Evening News, HBO’s Getting On, and Comedy Central’s Key and Peele. Mark has created musical themes for Nickelodeon's Wow Wow Wubbzy, the Seinfeld Season 8 DVD, as well as producing and performing with Grammy winner John Legend on HBO's: Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Mark holds a Master of Fine Arts in Music Education from Boston University as well as a dual Bachelor of Music in Music Production & Engineering and Music Education from Berklee College of Music. He currently teaches Music Technology and Composition for Visual Media at Berklee College of Music, California State University Northridge, and Los Angeles College of Music. Professor Wright explains the way harmony works in Western music. Throughout the lecture, he discusses the ways in which triads are formed out of scales, the ways that some of the most common harmonic progressions work, and the nature of modulation. Professor Wright focuses particularly on the listening skills involved in hearing whether harmonies are changing at regular or irregular rates in a given musical phrase. His musical examples in this lecture are wide-ranging, including such diverse styles as grand opera, bluegrass, and 1960s American popular music.
