With its sweeping harbour views and magnificent gardens, Ken Done may be right when he describes his Mosman home as "the best house in Sydney".
The house
A modernised mid-century bungalow with panoramic views over Sydney's Middle Harbour. A stone path leads to a fibro cabin at the water's edge, which is a weekender for the grandkids.
Who lives here
Artist Ken Done and his wife Judy.
What we did
"I first saw the cabin by the water when I was 14 and dreamed of living there," Ken recalls. "I rented it at first as my studio."
Over time he and Judy bought the home behind it, which is now their home and Ken's studio.
"In the house, we got rid of the wrought iron and pokey windows and opened it up with full-length glass. It's a simple house with beautiful bones in a stunning position."
Favourite room
"The studio. It's the room that means the most to me."
"I've lived in Mosman for more than 60 years. Where else in the world could you be somewhere like this only 20 minutes from the city?"
What's next?
"Next year I plan to do a series of works based on the garden."
"Keep it very simple and never forget the beauty of a simple branch or leaves – you don't always have to have flowers."
