Two children pricked by hidden syringe

Victoria Police are investigating two separate incidents at the Coles supermarket deli on Pascoe Vale Road in Broadmeadows.

The first incident happened at 1.30pm when a child was pricked by a syringe that was hidden under a rail believed to near the deli section.

Another was pricked about an hour later, which led to the discovery of the syringe by the child's mother.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman refused to comment on whether the syringe was deliberately planted inside the supermarket and said the matter was still under investigation.

A Coles spokesman confirmed the supermarket chain was aware of the incident.

"We are working with police to investigate an incident at our Broadmeadows store on Monday," he said.

"Our thoughts are with the customers affected by this event and their families. Out of respect for the privacy of the customers involved, we cannot comment further at this time."

Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the vicinity of the deli section of the Coles supermarket  to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
