Voice over IP
Voice over IP (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband telephony, and broadband phone service.
The term Internet telephony specifically refers to the provisioning of communications services (voice, fax, SMS, voice-messaging) over the public Internet, rather than via the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The steps and principles involved in originating VoIP telephone calls are similar to traditional digital telephony and involve signaling, channel setup, digitization of the analog voice signals, and encoding. Instead of being transmitted over a circuit-switched network, however, the digital information is packetized, and transmission occurs as IP packets over a packet-switched network. Such transmission entails careful considerations about resource management different from time-division multiplexing (TDM) networks.

Phone calls used to use a switchboard in a telephone exchange. Over time, these became a much smaller device called a PBX or PABX. Copper phone lines (PSTN) would connect, and it would route calls. person. Voice Over IP is rapidly changing the landscape of
voice telecommunications. The driving factor is how cheap
it is relative to traditional phone services. Roughly half
the cost or less!
Plus, VoIP is so much more powerful and agile than
traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). All those
bells and whistles you have to pay extra for with the phone
company (call waiting, Caller ID, 3-way calling, call
forwarding) - those are all included in the basic VoIP
service.

QOS -- Quality Of Service -- is a feature of networking equipment that allows the equipment to prioritize network traffic based on what it is.
Unified Communications is the idea that computer programs and server should be able to work with telephone communications.

A lot of guides for voice and video assume you already know the basics. So, here, we’re going to cover this to get you going faster. Let’s start with a little history...
Phone calls used to use a switchboard in a telephone exchange. Over time, these became a much smaller device called a PBX or PABX. Copper phone lines (PSTN) would connect, and it would route calls. Eventually, we started adding digital ISDN lines.
After a while, phone and data networks were combined. This was the birth of Voice over IP (VoIP). The heart of this is the IP PBX, which manages calls. Calls come in over PSTN, ISDN, or SIP Trunk. There can be a phone on every desk, or even a softphone (a software phone running on your laptop).
A simple phone system has a PBX, a SIP trunk to a provider, one or more switches, phones, and a DHCP server. The switches power up the phones with PoE, and provide network information with CDP or LLDP. The DHCP server gives the phone an IP, and tells it how to find the PBX.

Voice over IP
Voice over IP (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband telephony, and broadband phone service.
The term Internet telephony specifically refers to the provisioning of communications services (voice, fax, SMS, voice-messaging) over the public Internet, rather than via the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The steps and principles involved in originating VoIP telephone calls are similar to traditional digital telephony and involve signaling, channel setup, digitization of the analog voice signals, and encoding. Instead of being transmitted over a circuit-switched network, however, the digital information is packetized, and transmission occurs as IP packets over a packet-switched network. Such transmission entails careful considerations about resource management different from time-division multiplexing (TDM) networks.
