Gion Festival Facing Major Backlash
The Gion Festival, one of Japan’s three major festivals, takes place throughout July in Kyoto. The most famous event during this festival is the parade of floats. However, a controversy has arisen. The chief priest of Yasaka Shrine criticized the Kyoto Tourism Association’s plan to set up ¥400,000 VIP seats where people could watch the parade while dining. As a result, the price was reduced to ¥150,000, where only soft drinks are provided, and the issue was resolved. What do you think about this matter? It’s understandable that the priest wants to uphold tradition and ensure the festival is respected. However, the tourism ...

In July, enjoy the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto 🏮
The Gion Matsuri is a festival celebrated in Kyoto every July, and was originally established to combat plague and natural disasters.
It is one of the country’s three biggest festivals, along with the Tenjin Matsuri (Osaka) and the Kanda Matsuri (Tokyo).
The great floats of the Gion Matsuri are even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The float processions take place in two events: on July 17 to invite the gods out (saki-matsuri) and on July 24 to thank them for their visit (ato-matsuri).

The Gion Festival, one of Japan’s three major festivals, takes place throughout July in Kyoto. The most famous event during this festival is the parade of floats. However, a controversy has arisen. It’s understandable that the priest wants to uphold tradition and ensure the festival is respected. However, the tourism association did not intend to make money for themselves, but to cover the tens of millions of yen needed to hold the festival. The shortfall in funds would otherwise come from the taxes of Kyoto residents. Meanwhile, temples and shrines are exempt from property taxes, and the collected offerings are non-taxable.While it’s easy for Yasaka Shrine to criticize, placing additional financial burdens on Kyoto residents seems counterproductive to preserving tradition.

00:01Narita Gion Matsuri is a vibrant and historic festival held annually in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. It usually takes place over three days in early July and is one of the most significant events in the region. The festival is deeply rooted in local culture and religious traditions, and it attracts both locals and visitors from afar.
History and Significance
Origin: The Narita Gion Matsuri has been celebrated since 1681. It is held in honor of the deity enshrined at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, a prominent Buddhist temple founded over 1,000 years ago.
Purpose: The festival originally started as a way to pray for bountiful harvests and protection from natural disasters.
Main Events
Float Processions (Dashi and Mikoshi): The festival features impressive processions of elaborately decorated floats (dashi) and portable shrines (mikoshi):
Dashi: These are large, wheeled floats adorned with intricate carvings, tapestries, and lanterns. Each float represents a different district in Narita, and they are pulled through the streets by teams of residents.
Mikoshi: Portable shrines carried on the shoulders of participants. The mikoshi represent the deity of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple and are believed to bring blessings to the people as they are paraded around the city.
Performances: Traditional music (ohayashi) and dance performances accompany the float processions, adding to the festive atmosphere. Participants often wear colorful happi coats and headbands.
Traditional Aspects
Decorations: The floats are adorned with elaborate decorations, including traditional Japanese crafts such as wood carvings, gold leaf, and silk tapestries.
Costumes: Participants don traditional attire, including yukata (summer kimono) and happi coats, enhancing the festival’s historical and cultural ambiance.
Cultural Significance
Community Spirit: The festival fosters a strong sense of community, with residents from different districts collaborating to prepare and participate in the festivities.
Religious Rituals: The Narita Gion Matsuri is not only a celebration but also a series of religious ceremonies aimed at invoking blessings and protection for the community.
Visitor Experience
Festive Atmosphere: The streets of Narita come alive with the sounds of traditional music, the sight of colorful floats, and the aroma of festival foods.
Street Stalls: Numerous stalls line the streets, offering a variety of Japanese street foods, souvenirs, and local crafts. Popular festival foods include yakisoba (fried noodles), takoyaki (octopus balls), and taiyaki (fish-shaped pastries filled with sweet red bean paste).
Interactive: Visitors can participate in the festivities, including helping to pull the floats and joining in the dances.
Highlights
Shinshoji Temple: The temple itself is a major attraction, and during the festival, it becomes a focal point for many of the activities. The approach to the temple, Omotesando Street, is lined with traditional shops and eateries, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Evening Illuminations: The floats are illuminated at night, creating a magical and picturesque scene as they move through the streets.
Modern Adaptations
Inclusivity: While maintaining its traditional roots, the festival has adapted to accommodate international visitors, with multilingual information and guides available.
Narita Gion Matsuri is a lively and culturally rich festival that showcases the deep traditions and community spirit of Narita. It offers a unique opportunity to experience Japanese culture, religious practices, and local hospitality.
