Rape City (2013): Examining the terrible rape problem that afflicts the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
At least 200,000 people have been raped in DRC since 1996. With devastating frankness National Army soldiers confess to raping women and children in the towns they were supposed to be protecting from rebels.

"Raping gave us a lot of pleasure. When we rape we feel free", confesses a Congolese National Army soldier. He admits to raping 53 women and children, some as young as 5 years old. In this endemic cycle of violence, children born of rape are getting raped. According to Ida Sawyer from Human Rights Watch, the army commanders responsible for these horrific abuses are not brought to justice; instead they are often "rewarded and given positions of power and wealth". Efforts are being made to address this state of impunity; those in charge "must be pursued on a criminal level for these serious crimes", says the Military Prosecutor of North Kivu. But with the judicial system mostly fractured and forgotten, the only ones bearing the consequences are the victims. Their faith in the country has plummeted; as one victim says, "our army has looted and raped their own people. Our life in Congo has no meaning".

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about the Democratic Republic of Congo.
1. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania.
2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 4th most-populated nation in Africa and the 18th most populated country in the world. The people represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world.
3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future.
4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers.
5. The great apes, such as the bonobos and the eastern lowland gorillas, can be found only in Congo. Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans.
6. The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency, called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. The Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs, who used them for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main use was to bind marriages.
7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold have been dubbed “conflict minerals.” Armed groups use the profits from sales for campaigns of violence.

The Republic of the Congo (French: République du Congo), also known as Congo, Congo Republic,West Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville, is a country located in Central Africa. It is bordered by five countries: Gabon to the west; Cameroon to the northwest; the Central African Republic to the northeast; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east and south; and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the southwest.
The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes, who built trade links leading into the Congo River basin. Congo-Brazzaville was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. Upon independence in 1960, the former colony of French Congo became the Republic of the Congo. The People's Republic of the Congo was a Marxist–Leninist one-party state from 1970 to 1991. Multi-party elections have been held since 1992, although a democratically elected government was ousted in the 1997 Republic of the Congo Civil War and President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled for 26 of the past 36 years.

Democratic republic
A democratic republic is, strictly speaking, a country that is both a republic and a democracy. It is one where ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens, and the government itself is run through elected officials.
However, in recent practice, countries that have described themselves as democratic republics have not always held free or fair elections. Two examples of this were the German Democratic Republic and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, communist states commonly known as East Germany and North Vietnam. Another is the Democratic Republic of the Congo which in 2011 was rated by Freedom House as a "not free" country, having a rating of 6.0 (1.0 being completely free and 7.0 being completely unfree). Also, the 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea', commonly known as North Korea, is rated the least democratic in the world, run by a dictator. A republic is a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (/ˈkɒŋɡoʊ/; French pronunciation: [kɔ̃ɡo]; French: République démocratique du Congo), also known as DR Congo, DRC, DROC, RDC, Congo-Kinshasa, or simply Congo is a country located in Central Africa. From 1971 to 1997 it was named Zaïre. The DRC borders the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan to the north; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the east; Zambia and Angola to the south; and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is the second largest country in Africa by area, the largest in Subsaharan Africa, and the eleventh largest in the world. With a population of over 75 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the most populated officially Francophone country, the fourth most populated nation in Africa and the nineteenth most populated country in the world.
The Congolese Civil Wars, which began in 1996, brought about the end of Mobutu Sese Seko's 31-year reign and devastated the country. The wars ultimately involved nine African nations, multiple groups of UN peacekeepers and twenty armed groups, and resulted in the deaths of 5.4 million people.

Republic
A republic (from Latin: res publica) is a sovereign state or country which is organised with a form of government in which power resides in elected individuals representing the citizen body and government leaders exercise power according to the rule of law. In modern times, the definition of a republic is commonly limited to a government which excludes a monarch. Currently, 147 of the world's 206 sovereign states use the word "republic" as part of their official names; not all of these are republics in the sense of having elected governments, nor do all nations with elected governments use the word "republic" in their names.
Both modern and ancient republics vary widely in their ideology and composition. In the classical and medieval period of Europe, many states were fashioned on the Roman Republic, which referred to the governance of the city of Rome, between it having kings and emperors. The Italian medieval and Renaissance political tradition, today referred to as "civic humanism", is sometimes considered to derive directly from Roman republicans such as Sallust and Tacitus. However, Greek-influenced Roman authors, such as Polybius and Cicero, sometimes also used the term as a translation for the Greek politeia which could mean regime generally, but could also be applied to certain specific types of regime which did not exactly correspond to that of the Roman Republic. Republics were not equated with classical democracies such as Athens, but had a democratic aspect.

The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency, called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. The Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs, who used them for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main use was to bind marriages. 7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. 1. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania.
2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 4th most-populated nation in Africa and the 18th most populated country in the world. The people represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world.
3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future.
4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about the Democratic Republic of Congo.
1. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania.
2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 4th most-populated nation in Africa and the 18th most populated country in the world. The people represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world.
3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future.
4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers.
5. The great apes, such as the bonobos and the eastern lowland gorillas, can be found only in Congo. Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans.
6. The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency, called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. The Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs, who used them for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main use was to bind marriages.
7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold have been dubbed “conflict minerals.” Armed groups use the profits from sales for campaigns of violence.

Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings.

The Congo contains some of the most fascinating natural wildlife habitats in Africa. This fascinating country is home to a remarkable creature, the Mountain Gorilla. Our destination is the Virunga National Park that extends along the borders of the Congo, Uganda and Ruanda. Close to the border with Uganda is the village of Goma that contains several dwellings and a good market that displays an amazing variety of exotic fruit. After a short but very welcome break the journey continues in a four-wheel drive minibus but this does not last very long as it soon becomes necessary to travel by foot, a daunting prospect but also one inspired by the possibility of spotting the rare Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat on a journey that will take around two days. The excitement continues to mount as a tree, or even a bush, could suddenly reveal one of the region’s remarkable Mountain Gorillas. Suddenly from behind a bush the first one appears! Unlike their reputation of old, these mighty creatures are far from aggressive and Man originally thought of these animals as highly dangerous and unpredictable. However recent studies have proven that this is untrue and that the gorilla is an exceptionally peace loving creature. Even today the precise size of the gorilla population is not known. However, it is believed that around three hundred and eighty Mountain Gorillas inhabit the protected region of the Virunga Mountains. Various sounds such as screaming, whimpering, barking and grunting play an important if not vital role in the daily communication of the gorilla as the various members of a group may not see each other for much of the time. By communicating in this way they learn of the mood and current whereabouts of the other members of the group. On average an adult utters around eight sounds an hour. Due to constant supervision and strict policing these fascinating creatures that were until quite recently threatened with extinction, have managed to survive to the present day. Long may this continue!

Changing the face of African travel, the Republic of the Congo has opened up Central Africa’s great equatorial rainforests and intrepid travellers can now walk through sunlit jungle in search of gorillas and chimpanzees, stake out salt licks to wait for shy forest buffalo and elephant, and sweep a spotlight around at night to look for rare antelope and stealthy predators.
With most of its population concentrated in the south and the capital Brazzaville, Congo has managed to keep most of its northern forests and wetlands intact, the epitome of which is the spectacular Odzala-Kokoua National Park. Here, over 13 000 km² of primary rainforest provides Central Africa’s most important sanctuary for lowland gorillas and forest elephants. Odzala’s best accommodation is a trio of luxurious fly-in camps called Mboko, Ngaga and Lango. It’s worth the effort to travel there: these sensitively designed eco-lodges deliver comfort and adventure in equal proportions, and something of a pioneering spirit fills the people who you meet there. Expert guides lead you along forest paths clouded with dazzling butterflies; boatmen take you down lazy rivers to the calls of monkeys and tropical birds.
The best game viewing is at a ‘bai’, a marshy forest clearing where open water, good grazing and vital minerals in the soil attract some of Africa’s hardest-to-see animals. Forest elephant, bush pig and forest buffalo wallow in the mud; leopard, hyena and even bongo, the rainforest’s largest antelope, slip in silently after dark. The most dramatic wildlife experience, however, is deep in the forest’s interior where lowland gorillas still live in unprecedented numbers. Finding them is tough work – the rainforest does not give up its secrets so lightly – but the reward is an hour in the company of a habituated gorilla family, complete with curious infants, moody teenagers and poker-faced silverbacks.
Raw, real and perfect for experienced safari travellers with a thirst for adventure, Congo is one of Africa’s newest travel destinations. At least 200,000 people have been raped in DRC since 1996. With devastating frankness National Army soldiers confess to raping women and children in the towns they were supposed to be protecting from rebels.

"Raping gave us a lot of pleasure. When we rape we feel free", confesses a Congolese National Army soldier. He admits to raping 53 women and children, some as young as 5 years old. In this endemic cycle of violence, children born of rape are getting raped. According to Ida Sawyer from Human Rights Watch, the army commanders responsible for these horrific abuses are not brought to justice; instead they are often "rewarded and given positions of power and wealth". Efforts are being made to address this state of impunity; those in charge "must be pursued on a criminal level for these serious crimes", says the Military Prosecutor of North Kivu. But with the judicial system mostly fractured and forgotten, the only ones bearing the consequences are the victims. Their faith in the country has plummeted; as one victim says, "our army has looted and raped their own people. Our life in Congo has no meaning".

1. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania.
2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 4th most-populated nation in Africa and the 18th most populated country in the world. The people represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world.
3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future.
4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers.
5. The great apes, such as the bonobos and the eastern lowland gorillas, can be found only in Congo. Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans.
6. The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency, called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. The Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs, who used them for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main use was to bind marriages.
7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold have been dubbed “conflict minerals.” Armed groups use the profits from sales for campaigns of violence.

Rape City (2013): Examining the terrible rape problem that afflicts the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
At least 200,000 people have been raped in DRC since 1996. With devastating frankness National Army soldiers confess to raping women and children in the towns they were supposed to be protecting from rebels.

"Raping gave us a lot of pleasure. When we rape we feel free", confesses a Congolese National Army soldier. He admits to raping 53 women and children, some as young as 5 years old. In this endemic cycle of violence, children born of rape are getting raped. According to Ida Sawyer from Human Rights Watch, the army commanders responsible for these horrific abuses are not brought to justice; instead they are often "rewarded and given positions of power and wealth". Efforts are being made to address this state of impunity; those in charge "must be pursued on a criminal level for these serious crimes", says the Military Prosecutor of North Kivu. But with the judicial system mostly fractured and forgotten, the only ones bearing the consequences are the victims. Their faith in the country has plummeted; as one victim says, "our army has looted and raped their own people. Our life in Congo has no meaning".

The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty.
Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations.
For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse.

CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.
In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.
Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.
