Niger (i/ˈnaɪdʒər/ or /niːˈʒɛər/;French: [niʒɛʁ]), officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. Niger is bordered by Libya to the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria and Benin to the south, Burkina Faso and Mali to the west, and Algeria to the northwest. Niger covers a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2, making it the largest country in West Africa, with over 80 percent of its land area covered by the Sahara Desert. The country's predominantly Islamic population of 17,138,707 is mostly clustered in the far south and west of the country. The capital city is Niamey, located in the far-southwest corner of Niger.
Niger is a developing country, and is consistently one of the lowest-ranked in the United Nations' Human Development Index (HDI); it was ranked last at 187th for 2013. Much of the non-desert portions of the country are threatened by periodic drought and desertification. The economy is concentrated around subsistence and some export agriculture clustered in the more fertile south, and the export of raw materials, especially uranium ore. Niger faces serious challenges to development due to its landlocked position, desert terrain, high fertility rates and resulting overpopulation without birth control, poor education and poverty of its people, lack of infrastructure, poor health care, and environmental degradation.

(21 Dec 2016) LEAD IN: Libya is sending over a hundred migrants back to Nigeria. STORY-LINE: At the departures hall of Tripoli's Maetiga airport, a large number of migrants are queuing to get their flights home. The Libyan Department of Anti-Illegal Immigration, with the help of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), is sending home 140 Nigerian migrants from the Libyan capital. The deportation decision was taken now because Libyan detention centres are getting very crowded and the cost of the feeding and taking care of migrants in such places is running up quite a bill. There are more plans to deport more migrants in the near future especially now that African embassies in Tripoli are starting to cooperate with the immigration department. Say hello to the next best thing on Instagram. We've been seeing these videos floating around the 'net the last couple days, especially the one above of Flip from Queenz smacking some poor kid's cereal because M.O.P.'s "Ante Up (Remix)" came on. Lil homie looks like he's used to these kind of reactions as he just sits there and takes it. This is how most of us act in the whip when nobody's watching. When certain songs come on, it's hard not to act reckless. We dug through Flips' Instagram page and found some more hilarious rap song reactions. He straight abuses passengers and almost crashes numerous times. Flip only rivals Lil Mayo when it comes to the art of savagery. Anything in the name of likes, we ain't mad at him. 'Inside help' behind deadly Niger terror attack Days after a deadly suicide attack at a French-run uranium mine in Niger, a FRANCE 24 team that was given access to the high security site found evidence that the assailants had meticulously studied their target and likely received inside help. By Donaig Le Du / Julien SAUVAGET / Kethevane GORJESTANI (video) FRANCE 24 Arlit, NIGER (text) The explosives-packed car that rammed a grinding unit at a uranium mine in Arlit, a remote town in northern Niger, last week is in tatters. The shell of the car's transmission system stands upright in the rubble, while the twisted frame was flung about ten meters away. Days after suicide bombers attacked a uranium mine in this West African nation, the carefully coordinated and sophisticated nature of the assa...
While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. November 2015 I had the opportunity to travel to Niger, Africa with an incredible team of 18. As I returned home I had the privilege of creating a feature story on my trip for my TV class to share with my high school. As you watch this story from my heart I pray that you would be opened to the beautiful people of Niger and that you would partner with me in prayer for a flowing river of eternal life throughout this country and that souls would be saved for the Good News of our wonderful Savior, Jesus. Thank you for taking the time to watch this. Much love, Hannah

This week the AfricaAsOne team visits the West African country of Benin. We did not expect it, but surprise after surprise was waiting for us. We learn about the history of Benin and how both slavery and Voodoo have played their part in shaping this nation. Along with a trip to the Venice of Africa, we had plenty to keep us busy as we explored this exciting country. Many people trying to get to Europe from sub-Saharan Africa pass through Agadez, in central Niger. It's long been a haven for smugglers willing to get people across the desert to Libya, from where they try to cross the Mediterranean. But the numbers trying that journey are now falling, due to an EU-funded government crackdown.

I'm a flight attendant.... And I must say Niger is one of the most striking places I've ever seen. It's a super-dirty, ultra-poor country but for those that can see beyond the dirt and poverty, and be open-minded and brave, it's a beautiful place. Especially for a cultural travel. After a 13-hour shift, finally we arrive in Niamey. I knew NOTHING about Niger. So first I google things to do in Niamey, oh-uh, basically nothing. Just a mosque, a zoo which everyone tells to avoid, and a market. Yes, that’s it! We head to the market first, my gosh! What a chaos! How dirty! How alien! Everybody stares at us as if they’ve never seen a tourist before. Indeed I couldn’t see any other tourists around. Children are lovely as they immediately approach to us and smile. Adults look a bit apprehensive ...

Slowly the center of the universe shifts
No longer is he the birth of my shame
Now I see the end to this
Now I’m free to end all this
He don’t call me
and I surrender
He won’t see me
but I am headstrong
and I could be a little better
and I could be a little bit stronger
and I could be a little bit of everything
He was the stone on the ground I stepped upon
He meant to have me as I was for way too long
Now I see how I grew up
Now I’m here and he’s torn out
He won’t call me, and I surrender
He won’t see me
but I am headstrong
and I could be a little better
and I could be a little bit stronger
