Man, 20, kneecapped and shot in stomach with two different guns

A 20-year-old man is in hospital after he was kneecapped and shot in the stomach, apparently with two different guns, outside his Toowoomba home.

Police are hunting two men who drove off after seemingly trying to drag the man into their car, then shooting him, about 1am on Wednesday.

Toowoomba police Detective Inspector David Isherwood said the victim had been living at the home on Curzon Street, Rangeville, temporarily and knew the men.

"It would appear that they were trying to drag him to the car prior to the shooting incident," he said.

"They've then left after they shot him, got in the vehicle and drove off."

After examining the man's "quite severe" but not life-threatening wounds, detectives believed he had been shot in the knee with a powerful gun, possibly a shotgun, with a smaller gun used on his stomach.

They were investigating whether the incident was drug-related but Inspector Isherwood said there was no evidence of that at this stage.

He said a woman living in the house was woken by a barking dog but by the time she got outside could only see tail lights driving off into the distance.

"The lady in the house heard raised voices and heard what sounded like a firecracker," Inspector Isherwood said.

The victim refused to speak to police when he was first taken to hospital in a stable condition but police were hopeful he would help them after going through surgery.

The two weapons believed to be involved led police to think both men were likely armed.

But Inspector Isherwood stressed this was not a random attack and played down any fears for public safety.

"There's a reason for the shooting. Now we don't know what that reason is," he said.

"The suggestion is it could have been drug related.

"There's no evidence to suggest that but there's no doubt that the people knew him and he knew them because he went outside to meet them."

Police are appealing for more information.
