From white flash to blackout: Fire from birds' nest on powerline lights up Melbourne sky

Were you one of the many Melburnians stunned by a mysterious white flash of light on Wednesday morning? Was it a bird, was it a plane? Well no, but turns out it was caused by a bird.

Many residents in Melbourne's west spotted the flash but had no idea what had just happened.

"Something lit up the sky just in a fairly localised area, but there was a very white light," Paul, from Wollert, told radio station 3AW.

"It was just below the tree lines so I couldn't see the source of the light."

One Twitter user said: "just seen a massive flash that lit up the sky heading to the city from the Tullamarine possibly around the Airport West area??"

The cause of the flash was not paranormal activity around Melbourne's west. It was caused by an extremely lucky bird which was building a nest on powerlines.

"We haven't seen much rain in a while, then with a combination of water, dust build up and electricity, that saw the birds nest go up in flames," a Jemena spokesman said.

The incident caused a blackout across 130 homes in Airport West from about 6.30am.

The spokesman said power would be restored to those homes by 10.30am. He said the bird survived the fire and "was doing ok".

Melbourne received a much-needed 4.4 millimetres of rain between midnight and 10am on Wednesday, after the driest June on record.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Beren Bradshaw said the highest rainfall was at Mount Saint Leonard, with 12 millimetres, followed by Ferny Creek and Moorabin Airport, which received 10 millimetres.

"There are still some showers about, we are still expecting showers in to the early afternoon but that will ease later on today," she said.

More rain is expected tomorrow morning, with a top of 12 degrees. Friday and Saturday will be dry and partly cloudy.
