http://democracynow.org - President Obama has appointed seven members to a federal control board that will run the finances of Puerto Rico’s nearly bankrupt government for at least the next five years and restructure nearly $70 billion in debt. The board is made up of three Democrats and four Republicans who will not only approve any budgets created by the island’s politicians, but also attempt to negotiate with the island’s nearly 20 creditors. On Wednesday, hundreds of protesters in Puerto Rico blocked a street in front of a hotel where bankers and business executives were gathering for a conference hosted by the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce. Meanwhile, a new report from the ReFund America Project has revealed firms like UBS, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Barclays Capital have collect...

http://democracynow.org - Puerto Rico has announced plans to close 179 public schools just days after filing for a form of bankruptcy protection, seeking to restructure $123 billion in debt and pension obligations, in the largest local government insolvency in U.S. history. The move is likely to slash money for healthcare, pensions and infrastructure. The territory petitioned for relief under Title III of the PROMESA law, which recognizes that Puerto Rico is not part of any state and must in some ways be treated as sovereign. Puerto Rico is legally barred from using Chapter 9, the bankruptcy route normally taken by insolvent local governments. A Puerto Rican man left comfort in China to return to his struggling homeland, even though it means he has to work three jobs. Puerto Rico has become a ghost town. As the U.S. mainland battled a recession, the island has been in depression for the last decade. The government defaulted on some of its $70 billion debt earlier this year. Uncertainty and high unemployment spurred 400,000 to leave the island for the mainland. But some returned. Xioning Martinez, 31, had a small business in China, where he lived for 13 years. But almost a year ago, he decided to move back to Puerto Rico, the island where he grew up. He needed to be closer to family after being isolated for all that time. But it’s come at a cost. Martinez works as a sushi chef and baker for members of his family. In his spare t...

music licensed through the music bed We're thrilled to share the highlight from Nicki and Carlos' gorgeous interfaith wedding at the Salamander Resort in Middleburg, VA. Nicki is of Indian descent and Carlos' family is from Puerto Rico, so their wedding was not only about two people becoming one, but two cultures as well. We were fortunate to spend three days with the Shah and Rivera clans and loved seeing these families grow closer together over the weekend. Each family was exposed to new and exciting traditions (and food!) from a culture different from their own and by the end of the weekend, they were one family. It's always a pleasure working with our talented friends at Engaging Affairs, who made sure everything looked amazing and ran smoothly. We are grateful to Nicki and Carlos and...
Project by MegaZoo a.k.a. Arthur Azoulai & Melody Rees This remix was made to create a new seat of atmospheres from the original designed spaces. This project is a morphological study that assumes an extended field of movement and circulating forces. It is designed by simulating self-organizing biological systems where selective decision making is used to sculpt innate yet deliberate spatial relationships and formal qualities. At its pure essence, this project is an infrastructural system that acts as a receiver and link-up for formal architectural systems. The inherent continuity of the overall form as a topological surface allows for the emergence of roadways, interstitial interior space, and landscape. With imbricating structural support systems, the collective tectonics provide a netw...

Roots, History and Diaspora have been an important facet of our family life (Chaluisan) ever since ourforefathers moved from Navarre in Spain and the Northern Basque Country in France to Haiti then Puerto Rico and eventually the United States. In researching the family name (originally Chaluisant) I have found an interesting connection to the Cajun population in Louisiana . There too I have discovered Chaluisant's (French translation "those of the strong blood"). I take this opportunity to perform Jambalaya (On the Bayou) a song written and recorded by American country music singer Hank Williams that was first released in July 1952. After graduation from Haines High School in Alaska, my parents took me on this trip of a lifetime. We flew to Puerto Rico, stayed in Rincón for 3 days, then boarded the ship in San Juan. Our first stop was St. Maarten, then St. Kitts, Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados, and a final day at sea. When we returned to port San Juan, we stayed in Luquillo Beach for a few days before returning to Miami. Spent a night on the strip in Vegas, then made our way back to our beautiful house. Along the way, we met the Fischer family. We will never forget them, and they will always be welcomed to visit us in AK! C-Squad!!!

Lately in the local news and media, the hottest subject is ‘The Mental Health of the Puerto Rican people.’ This arises because professionals attribute the ailments of our society: crime, rape, murder and recently the amount of pedophilia, to our low standards on the subject of Mental Health. The governments solution has been to spend millions of dollars, even with the islands non-existent economy, into public mental health services. Are mental health issues the cause of the problems in Puerto Rico?” Freedomain Radio is 100% funded by viewers like...
The economic principle is clear: you cannot borrow money indefinitely to pay your bills. Eventually, the bills come due. You can only delay the inevitable. This is a law of economics, and it applies to every country on earth, including the United States. Times article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/03/business/dealbook/puerto-rico-debt.html Note: I'm talking about Thailand's health care market for tourists, which is relatively free. I'm not talking about their socialized plan for Thai residents, which is of course far inferior. Mr. Soto mounting the weapons before battle. This is the way that weapons are mounted in South America, Puerto Rico and the caribbean iIsland.
For the last three decades, Puerto Rico’s public health officials have unsuccessfully fought a full-scale public health crisis. Today, the island has one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the U.S. and more than 50 percent of all newly reported cases come from intravenous drug use. Overwhelmed and chronically underfunded, the existing framework of health programs struggles to serve the island’s estimated 60,000 intravenous drug users, so a patchwork of groups tries to fill the void. El Punto en la Montaña, a group that offers medical supplies and services to addicts who live in rural areas, is of the few NGOs in Puerto Rico addressing this health crisis. Chicago's Puerto Rican Story covers the early history of Puerto Rico. The film covers the Spanish American War of 1898 and highlights the early formation of a commonwealth government in Puerto Rico. The film touches on the Foraker Act of 1900, the Jones Act of 1917 and spans until the present day. The interviews touch on various issues including family, work, housing, education and organizing successes: the creation of community organizations, health centers and clinics, the implementation of educational reforms, the hiring of Puerto Rican police officers, elected officials at every level of government, and the creation of a cultural and commercial business district known as “Paseo Boricua.” “Chicago’s Puerto Rican Story,” serves as an important educational tool for students to und...
TITANS Race is a hardcore 10 miles (16.1 km) mud based obstacle course located in the geographic heart of Puerto Rico (Orocovis) in Toro Verde Adventure Park. The race is designed to challenge people across all fitness levels to test their all around body strength, and mental endurance. The course is built by “fitness freaks” with venue specific and terrain inspired obstacles designed to rip you from your fitness comfort zone and give you something to brag about. You can tackle it individually or as a team (we actually reward you for it by providing group discounts). TITANS Race is not about who finishes first but who finishes, that is why time taking will be offered as optional. Ultimately, our goal is to promote health and fitness; to share a common goal and above all, to have fun.

In a game that featured a little bit of everything -- two extra innings, new rules, spectacular defense, timely hitting, emotional outbursts, multiple replay reviews, long home runs and spectacular performances by Major League stars -- one team eventually had to win to become the first entrant in the final of the 2017 World Baseball Classic. It was Puerto Rico, which prevailed, 4-3, in the bottom of the 11th inning on Monday night at Dodger Stadium when Eddie Rosario's sacrifice line drive to center field drove home Carlos Correa, sparking a celebration by...

Warning: Don't watch this if you live above the Mason Dixon line in the continental United States during winter - it may cause jealousy, envy, and/or spontaneous vacations LOL Here's some footage with a Canon XHA1 from my recent trip to Puerto Rico. Included are scenes from Old San Juan, Fajardo, Guanica, La Parguera and El Yunque, the National Rain Forest. I was there for work and then brought my family down for 10 more days and explored all of Puerto Rico. If you ever go, stay away from Isla Verda which is a very touristy, similar to Atlantic City because of the casinos. I recommend renting a car and going just about anywhere else. The rain forest is amazing, the drive along Route 143 is incredible, and don't miss the U.N.-mandated bioreserve dry forest in Guanica. Enjoy.

Located on top of 200-foot limestone cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo) is located on the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico. The lighthouse was built in 1882 by the Spanish government in order to guide passing ships through the southeast entrance from the Caribbean Sea through the treacherous Mona Passage into the Atlantic Ocean. My family and I had a few afternoon hours to kill on our recent trip to Puerto Rico so we drove down there from Rincón to take in the absolutely breathtaking views. I brought along my Panasonic GH2 and Olympus M Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 lens - enjoy the video. During my short stay in Puerto Rico, I decided to tackle my own Puerto Rico bucket list. Watch as I make new friends over Bacardi, hit the dance floor and salsa, live it up like a rap star, and fly to the small island of Culebra to check out Flamenco Beach, consistently rated one of the beset beaches in the Caribbean, if not the world. *Editor's Note* No rum was harmed in the making of this video, as this trip was purely business. All liquids consumed were actually water, except for that first shot, which I regretted about 2 seconds after the glass touched my lips.

While 97% of those who participated in the referendum vote favored statehood, only 23% of the territory's population participated in the process. It was the lowest level of participation in any election in Puerto Rico since 1967. U.S. Congress makes the sole determination regarding any changes to Puerto Rico's political status. Puerto Rico is currently seeking the bankruptcy protections that statehood would likely provide – with $74 billion in debt and $4...

A brief 4 day trip to the beautiful Caribbean island of Puerto Rico in October. My girlfriend and I spent two days exploring Old San Juan which is known for it’s rich history, color and old world elegance. We also took a short drive to El Yunque National Forest and explored the beautiful tropical rainforest. Unfortunately there were two days of heavy rain that kept us from attempting some canyoneering with friends. I had really been looking forward to this, as it was pretty much the main reason why I wanted to come back to Puerto Rico. Lolita standing on the corner
Such beauty in one so young
Her eyes stare only for a moment
With the sun's glare
She is gone
It's one world, one world to another
No warning of things to come
The splendour one side of the picture
Only one glimpse have to run
It's OK down in Puerto Rico
All the people say
Must come back here some day
It's OK down in Puerto Rico
Come what may there's always church on Sunday
It's midday
All the streets are quiet
People sleep through the hot day sun
With darkness atmosphere's appealing
The night holds promise of things to come
It's OK here in Puerto Rico
All the people sway
We slip into a new day
It's OK here in Puerto Rico
If there's a way we'll come back here some day
It's one bar then onto another
In the centre of old San Juan
Ten thousand people standing on the sidewalks
I drink with each and every one
It's OK here in Puerto Rico
All the people say you must come back here someday
It's OK here in Puerto Rico
Come what may there's always church on Sunday
It's OK here in Puerto Rico
As the people sway
We drink into a new day
It's OK here in Puerto Rico
