"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either passively, openly or via sabotage.
As a phrase meaning "the boss" it dates from at least 1918.
In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.
The use of this term was expanded to counterculture groups and their battles against authority, such as the Yippies, which, according to a May 19, 1969 article in U.S. News and World Report, had the "avowed aim ... to destroy 'The Man', their term for the present system of government". The term eventually found its way into humorous usage, such as in a December 1979 motorcycle ad from the magazine Easyriders which featured the tagline, "California residents: Add 6% sales tax for The Man."

The band has won three Meteor Ireland Music Awards, two World Music Awards and have received two Brit Award nominations.

Plot: Ware College is a small Black college in Ware, Ohio. Once prominent, it is now low in attendance, low in enrollment and low on money; and at a meeting with instructors Drury and Annabelle Brown, Dean Hargreaves reveals that CEO Benjamin Ware III, grandson of the college's founder, claims the estate of his late grandfather is now also destitute, which they believe is untrue and a result of Annabelle's having spurned his affections. They decide to appeal to their famous alumni for financial help thru a reunion, and invitations are sent. Many could help; but surely not Lucius Jordan, a timid lad who loved Annabelle too but dropped out under pressure from Ware. What they don't know is, he's now Louis Jordan, king of swing and leader of the Tympani Band. By accident, Jordan and his band's train is sidelined in Ware for repairs and when he learns of the college's plight, he agrees to pitch in. Though the stuffy faculty are unaware of his reputation, the kids are, and class attendance soars with Jordan's presence in the classroom. Flames of romance with Annabelle are rekindled. But things start looking bleak: other alumni are all declining to help, and Ware has found out about the fundraising scheme and orders the Dean to resign immediately... The plot serves as a structure for about a dozen swing numbers by Jordan's group, with dancing by the Aristo-Genes Girls' Club.

Plot: This telling of life's passing parade focuses on the theme of luck as told in three true stories. In the first story which takes place in 1744, a young man working for the British East India Company is depressed about his lot with the company. He is stuck with a clerical job, rather than be assigned to military action as he had wanted. He contemplates suicide. If he is successful, he would miss the opportunity to do for the company what he wanted. Luck intervening in what would end up being those failed suicide attempts would lead to a great military life. In the second story, Dr. Wilhelm Röntgen, on November 8, 1895, is working in his lab when an old piece of chemical cardboard on his shelf falls next to an illuminated Leonard vacuum tube. This several million to one accident would lead to one of the most important discoveries within medical history. In the final story, average joe Harry Jones feels that he doesn't get any breaks in life. A wrong number telephone call he receives in the middle of the night may be on the surface considered a continuation of that bad luck, but it alerts him to a menace far greater that probably would have killed him and his family otherwise.

There are places I remember All my life, though some have changed Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places had their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life I've loved them all But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more In my life I love you more
