Anyone here have any reasonable figures on civiliian casualties during the CW? McPherson says 50,000, others have much higher “guestimates” but none have any factual support. Any ideas?

Depends on what you mean by “casualties” and what you mean by “Civilians”. There was a pretty vicious guerrilla war in trans-west and parts of Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky which resulted in a lot of male “Civilians” killing each other. And this guerrilla war resulted in a few of indirect deaths of non-combatants through disease and starvation. OTOH, The direct killing of civilians by men in either of the official Army or the starvation of civilians due to Armies foraging was minuscule.

Thanks. I was thinking more in terms of numbers who died due to starvation and disease among displaced residents, camp followers, etc. My reading indicates that the number killed by soldiers on either side was rather low.
