A search is underway in bushland north-west of Sydney for a newborn baby suspected of being murdered up to a decade ago.

The NSW Homicide Squad received information earlier this year that the baby was murdered not long after being born in late 2007 or 2008.

Police search for body of baby

The NSW Homicide Squad receive a tip-off that a newborn was killed and buried shortly after birth a decade ago. Vision: NSW Police.

It is understood the baby's mother was in her late teens when she gave birth.

The infant wasn't alive for long, possibly only a matter of days, before police believe it was killed and buried on a rural property on the north-western fringes of Sydney.

Since receiving the tip-off, police have worked with the Department of Family and Community Services and NSW Health to track down records of the baby and its mother, who lives in the Sydney area.

It is understood there are no records of the baby being born in a NSW hospital.

On Tuesday morning riot squad police and homicide detectives descended on a 15 hectare rural property on Cliftonville Road at South Maroota, north of Windsor, to search for the baby's remains.

Detective Chief Inspector Angelo Memmolo said police hoped the search could spark someone's memory.

"An investigation into the death of a baby will always be delicate and challenging for police and this incident is of great concern to us," he said.

"If anyone has knowledge about the possible murder of a baby around this time, please get in touch with us."

The search, led by Strike Force Enact, in South Maroota is expected to run over a few days.
