How much does it cost to see one of the world's biggest comedians perform an intimate comedy club gig?

About $20 apparently – although the catch, of course, is that it's completely unannounced.

Oscars 2016: Chris Rock's monologue

Chris Rock opens the 88th Academy Awards with a pithy reaction to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

Chris Rock has been shocking comedy fans as he makes his away across Australia for his Total Blackout arena tour by pulling in a couple of secret gigs at tiny venues.

The Australian leg of Rock's tour kicked off in Perth last Friday, but the night before he made a surprise appearance at the city's Charles Hotel, where a lucky 150 punters got to see him do a 35-minute set for a bargain $20.

And ahead of his show in Melbourne on Monday, he pulled off a similar secret gig at the city's Comic's Lounge on Sunday night, where tickets typically start from $15.

Tickets for Rock's week-long Australian tour are costing up to $145 and come with a strict no mobile phone policy, no doubt to protect the comedian's $US40 million ($52 million) Netflix deal for two stand-up comedy specials, one of which will be from the tour.

But it seems that Rock also likes to keep it real with the diversions into the two comedy clubs.

The audience at the Perth show were in tears and screaming, according to the ABC

Chris Rock revealed exclusively to Fairfax Media in 2015 his plans to return to stand-up after taking a break from the stage since 2008.

His Total Blackout tour, which kicked off in the US in February and will go right through until January where it ends in London, has scored rave reviews for the hugely personal set, which includes material on the break-up with his wife of 18 years, Malaak Compton.

The Emmy-award winning comic has among his credits a stint as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, writing, producing and narrating the TV series Everybody Hates Chris, films including the Madagascar franchises, Top Five and 2 Days in New York, and has hosted the Oscars twice.

He performs at Melbourne's Hisense Arena on Monday and Tuesday and Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena on Wednesday and ICC Sydney Theatre on Thursday.
