High flyers: Radio Birdman, the influential Sydney six-piece, before they fell to Earth.

How Birdman soared and then crashed

The most interesting question about any great band is not how and why they broke up. Martin Landau arrives at the 24th Night of 100 Stars Oscars Viewing Gala.

Were it not for a stunning performance in the film Ed Wood in 1994, which won him an Oscar, actor Martin Landau might have had to settle with a couple of, admittedly memorable, genre hits, Mission: Impossible and Space: 1999, as his epitaph.

Barbie dolls in various outfits at the makeshift Barbie museum, in 2004.

Everything about 2017, from the resurgence of racism and sexism in public life to Ivanka Trump's star turn as Julie Nixon Eisenhower, feels retro. So it makes a certain amount of sense that I find myself looking forward with pleasure and apprehension to a new movie about an old toy: Barbie is getting another shot at the big time. The way she's getting it says a lot about adults' anxieties about children's stories.
