Roubaix (French pronunciation: [ʁu.bɛ]) is an old mono-industrial and working-class commune in northern France, in the department of Nord, which grew rapidly in the 19th century from its textile industries. This former new town is the second largest city in the French region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais ranked by population with about 95,000 inhabitants. Located between the cities of Lille and Tourcoing, Roubaix is the chef-lieu of two cantons.
Together with Lille, Tourcoing, Villeneuve-d'Ascq and eighty-one other communes, Roubaix gives structure to a four-centred metropolitan area inhabited by around 1.1 million people: the European Metropolis of Lille. To a greater extent, Roubaix belongs to a vast conurbation formed with the Belgian cities of Menen, Mouscron, Kortrijk and Tournai, which gave birth to the first European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation in January 2008, Lille–Kortrijk–Tournai with an aggregate over 2 million inhabitants.
Roubaix occupies a central position on the north-east slope of the European Metropolis of Lille: it is set on the eastern side of Lille and the southern side of Tourcoing, close to the Belgian border. As regards towns' boundaries, Roubaix is encompassed by seven cities which constitute its immediate neighbouring environment. These municipalities are namely: Tourcoing to the north and the northwest, Wattrelos to the northeast, Leers to the east, Lys-lez-Lannoy to the southeast, Hem to the south and Croix to the southwest and the west. Roubaix, alongside those municipalities and twenty-one other communes, belongs to the land of Ferrain, a little district of the former Castellany of Lille between the Lys and Escaut rivers.
Tom Boonen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈtɔm ˈboːnə(n)]; born 15 October 1980) is a Belgian professional road bicycle racer who won the 2005 world road race championship. He is a member of the Etixx–Quick-Step team, and is a single-day road specialist with a strong finishing sprint. He won the cycling monuments Paris–Roubaix 4 times and the Tour of Flanders 3 times, among many other prestigious victories, such as prevailing 5 times in the E3 Harelbeke, winning 6 stages of the Tour de France and winning the Overall title of the Tour of Qatar 4 times. His personality and looks, with his successes, turned him into Belgium's male sports idol of the mid-2000s, but he incurred controversy after testing positive twice for cocaine.
At the start of 2002 Boonen rode for U.S. Postal Service, finishing third in Paris–Roubaix after an early breakaway. Fellow Belgian Johan Museeuw had escaped to a solo victory. Team captain George Hincapie crashed in a slippery section of the course leaving Boonen to ride for himself. Boonen's performance led Museeuw – his childhood hero – to declare Boonen his successor.

Paris-Roubaix also know as the “Hell of the North” is one of the hardest one day races in the world. Top cyclists from around the world head to Compiègne to ride 257.5 kilometers north to Roubaix on 27 sectors of “pavé" or cobblestones. The terrain of the race has led to the development of specialized frames, wheels, and tires. The 114th edition of Pairs-Roubaix was one of the most exciting finishes in years as many legends were out to claim the king of cobbles. Four-time winner Tom Boonen was looking to add his fifth title to his resume but it was 37 year old Matthew Haymen from Orica-GreenEDGE who out sprinted Boonen in the last 50 meters.

Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN The spring classic race Paris-Roubaix has made a very specific type of road famous on a global scale. Centuries old farm tracks, known as "pavé" are used to provide a unique challenge to the racers. This challenge comes from the fact that they are made up of large and exceedingly rough cobbles. To ride these requires the correct technique, exceedingly good bike handling, and the right equipment to make sure that both you and bike get through in one piece. Double wrap bar tape While 250km of racing over roads that you’d think twice about driving down will take a significant toll on the legs, many pros also double (or even triple) wrap their bar tape in an attempt to provide extra cushioning for their hands, wrists, and shoulders. This is also often complemented by gel inserts positioned underneath the bar tape, which provide a little extra protection from the cobbled terrain, especially as frame manufacturers generally concentrate on providing a comfortable rear end for their bikes, occasionally neglecting to provide any extra cushioning at the front. 2. Whilst visiting Northern France to film the Paris - Roubaix bike race I had a chance for a brief stop in Lille. The largest city in French Flanders Lille old town is known for its characterful 17th century buildings with various wrought iron signs and traditional narrow streets opening into larger open squares making the area well worth a visit. Look out for the upside down house and the Vieille Bourse (Old stock exchange), built from 1652 to 1653 This building is made up of 24 little houses around an arched courtyard. A second-hand book market as well as chess players can be seen inside.
A fantastic route through the mountains of Fuerteventura on my new Sworks Roubaix. Beautiful views and great roads all with a splendid tune from the Imagine Dragons
"All units, code four."
