A San Francisco detective (James Stewart) suffering from acrophobia investigates the strange activities of an old friend's wife, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Dismissed when first released, later heralded as one of director Alfred Hitchcock's finest films (and, according to Hitchcock, his most personal one), this adaptation of the French novel D'entre les morts weaves an intricate web of obsession and deceit. It opens as Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) realizes he has vertigo, a condition resulting in a fear of heights, when a police officer is killed trying to rescue him from falling off a building. Scottie then retires from his position as a private investigator, only to be lured into another case by his old college friend, Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore). Elster's wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak), has been possessed by a spirit, and Elster wants Scottie to follow her. He hesitantly agrees, and thus begins the film's wordless montage as Scottie follows the beautiful yet enigmatic Madeleine through 1950s San Francisco (accompanied by Bernard Herrmann's hypnotic score). After saving her from suicide, Scottie begins to fall in love with her, and she appears to feel the same way. Here tragedy strikes, and each twist in the movie's second half changes our preconceptions about the characters and events. In 1996 a new print of Vertigo was released, restoring the original grandeur of the colors and the San Francisco backdrop, as well as digitally enhancing the soundtrack.

A heartwarming, quintessentially British adventure for all the family, PUDSEY THE DOG: THE MOVIE follows cheeky London stray dog, Pudsey, who is quite happy being a lone ranger, looking out for number one, until he meets siblings Molly (Izzy Meikle-Small), George (Spike White) and Tommy (Malachy Knights). After losing their father, their mother Gail (Jessica Hynes) is moving the family to the sleepy village of Chuffington and Pudsey tags along, to the dismay of their landlord, Mr. Thorne (John Sessions), and his cat Faustus. As Pudsey starts to settle in with the family and realize what he was missing when he was alone, he stumbles across Thorne's evil plan and he determines to save them and the whole village.

Deadline is reporting that movie titles under the DC Vertigo imprint including Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Sandman will be moved from Warner Bros to their smaller genre focused label New Line Cinema. However The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that the Justice League Dark film which features several characters that have appeared in Vertigo comic books will stay with Warner Bros and that Guillermo Del Toro who has long been thought to be directing the project is no longer attached.

Dismissed when first released, later heralded as one of director Alfred Hitchcock's finest films (and, according to Hitchcock, his most personal one), this adaptation of the French novel D'entre les morts weaves an intricate web of obsession and deceit. It opens as Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) realizes he has vertigo, a condition resulting in a fear of heights, when a police officer is killed trying to rescue him from falling off a building. Scottie then retires from his position as a private investigator, only to be lured into another case by his old college friend, Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore). Elster's wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak), has been possessed by a spirit, and Elster wants Scottie to follow her. He hesitantly agrees, and thus begins the film's wordless montage as Scottie follows the beautiful yet enigmatic Madeleine through 1950s San Francisco (accompanied by Bernard Herrmann's hypnotic score). After saving her from suicide, Scottie begins to fall in love with her, and she appears to feel the same way. Here tragedy strikes, and each twist in the movie's second half changes our preconceptions about the characters and events. In 1996 a new print of Vertigo was released, restoring the original grandeur of the colors and the San Francisco backdrop, as well as digitally enhancing the soundtrack.

Starring Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak, VERTIGO often contends for not only one of Hitchcock's greatest films, but one of the greatest films of all-time. On the 7th of June 2013, The Yeah Sessions guest curated Short Cuts 1 - five talks delivered by film buffs at the Sydney Film Festival Hub theatrette.
Our third speaker was Dr Bruce Isaacs, talking about the recent Sight and Sound poll that saw Vertigo pushed into the top spot as the 'greatest film of all time'. Bruce discusses his love for the film, and explores the features of Vertigo he feels make it worthy of being called 'The greatest film of all time'.

Bruce Isaacs is a lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Sydney. He has published work on film history and theory, with a particular interest in film style and technology in the era of Hollywood. His most recent work, 'The Orientation of Future Cinema: Technology, Aesthetics, Spectacle' (Bloomsbury) was published in March 2013. He adores all things Hitchcock, but Vertigo has a very special place in his heart.
