Kia Sorento GT-Line new car review

Cosmetic upgrades build on family SUV's appeal.

Why are we driving it?

Kia revamped its Sorento SUV for 2017, introducing a new GT-Line variant at the top of the range.

The peak of the Sorento range brings spotty touches such as chrome-finished 19-inch wheels, red brake callipers and steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, as well as luxury touches such as red leather trim, interior brightwork and stainless steel side steps.

What we like

The GT-Line changes are cosmetic in nature but elevate the Sorento's kerb appeal. The best changes are on the inside, where glossy black trim upholstery lifts the cabin ambience.

While Kia hasn't fiddled with mechanical elements, the Sorento's reasonably strong turbo diesel engine and locally honed suspension combine to make it one of the better family SUVs to drive. Predictable and planted (if a little hefty), the Sorento is much more composed than some rivals.

This top-end Sorento also features a comprehensive array of safety features, bringing forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking systems that join blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and lane departure warning systems.

The full-sized Sorento offers seven-seat versatility with side airbags and air vents that contribute to passenger comfort throughout the car, which is backed by Kia's attractive seven-year warranty, roadside assistance and capped price servicing guarantee.

What we don't like

The Sorento GT-Line's chrome wheels and side sills look a little over-wrought and, dare we say it, American on local roads. There's more than a touch of "soccer mom" here.

Kia's red leather interior may not suit all tastes too.

There's no petrol option for this trim line, which is disappointing if you don't like diesel.

It's unfortunate that Kia doesn't offer active safety features in entry-level models in the Sorento range - the GT-Line's near-$60,000 asking price is a steep ask for many families.

Would we buy it?

We like Sorento at Drive - it's a Car of the Year winner in our family SUV category. The GT-Line builds nicely on its appeal for buyers who want a bit of bling.
