The sphinx (Greek: Σφίγξ [sfiŋks], Boeotian: Φίξ [pʰiks], Arabic: أبو الهول ʾabū l-hawl "father of dread",) is a mythical creature with, as a minimum, the head of a human and the body of a lion.
In Greek tradition, it has the head of a human, the haunches of a lion, and sometimes the wings of a bird. It is mythicised as treacherous and merciless. Those who cannot answer its riddle suffer a fate typical in such mythological stories, as they are killed and eaten by this ravenous monster. This deadly version of a sphinx appears in the myth and drama of Oedipus. Unlike the Greek sphinx, which was a woman, the Egyptian sphinx is typically shown as a man (an androsphinx). In addition, the Egyptian sphinx was viewed as benevolent, but having a ferocious strength similar to the malevolent Greek version and both were thought of as guardians often flanking the entrances to temples.
In European decorative art, the sphinx enjoyed a major revival during the Renaissance. Later, the sphinx image, something very similar to the original Ancient Egyptian concept, was exported into many other cultures, albeit often interpreted quite differently due to translations of descriptions of the originals and the evolution of the concept in relation to other cultural traditions.
The Great Sphinx of Giza (Arabic: أبو الهول Abū al-Haul, English: The Terrifying One; literally: Father of Dread), commonly referred to as the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining or couchant sphinx (a mythical creature with a lion's body and a human head) that stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx is generally believed to represent the face of the Pharaoh Khafra.
It is the largest monolith statue in the world, standing 73.5 metres (241 ft) long, 19.3 metres (63 ft) wide, and 20.22 m (66.34 ft) high. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture, and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafra (c. 2558–2532 BC).
The Sphinx is a monolith carved down into the bedrock of the plateau which also served as the quarry for the pyramids and other monuments in the area. Because of its geological history, the nummulitic limestone of the area consists of layers of widely differing quality offering unequal resistance to erosion, mostly due to wind and windblown sand, which explains the uneven degradation of the body of the Sphinx. The floor of the Sphinx depression and lowest part of the body including the legs is solid, hard rock. Above this, the body of the lion up to its neck is a heterogeneous zone with friable layers that have suffered considerable disintegration. The layer in which the head was sculpted is also much harder.

Joe Rogan Experience Episode #961 Joe Rogan and Graham Hancock, Randall Carlson, and Michael Shermer with special guests Marc Defant and Malcolm LeCompte. Shermer, Hancock, and Carlson discuss the true age of the Sphinx and evidence for battling evidence for the true age of it.
"Robert Temple reveals that the Sphinx was originally a monumental Anubis, the Egyptian jackal god, and that its face is that of a Middle Kingdom pharaoh, Amenemhet II, which was a later re-carving. In addition, he provides photographic evidence of ancient sluice gate traces to demonstrate that, during the Old Kingdom, the Sphinx as Anubis sat surrounded by a moat filled with water--called Jackal Lake in the ancient Pyramid Texts--where religious ceremonies were held. He also provides evidence that the exact size and position of the Sphinx were geometrically determined in relation to the pyramids of Cheops and Chephren and that it was part of a pharaonic resurrection cult." The pattern of erosion on the Sphinx indicates that it was carved at the end of the last Ice Age, when heavy rains fell in the eastern Sahara, more than 12,000 years ago. This contrasts starkly with the 'orthodox' Egyptological dating for the Sphinx of around 4,500 years. The seismic survey indicated the existence of several unexplored tunnels and cavities in the bedrock beneath the Sphinx, including a large rectangular chamber at a depth of some 25 feet beneath the monuments front paws. In 1993, John West and his team, were physically expelled from the site by Dr. Zahi Hawass, the Egyptian government's Chief Inspector of Antiquities for the Pyramids and Sphinx.
Some archeologists have noticed that the human head of the Great Sphinx of Giza is too small for it's lion body. One theory is that the sphinx was originally not a sphinx at all. From: SECRETS: The Sphinx http://bit.ly/1l9ZWWS
Over the past few years, we have touched upon many of the amazing, and often extremely ancient sites, which dot our earth. Many of these spectacular achievements, indicating to the countless specialists, archaeologists, geologists and others involved, attempting unravelling of their true history, their true story of antiquity. On several occasions, we have been confronted with compelling, and often conclusive, explorative analysis, which has often resulted in the retrieval compelling supportive artefacts, which have supported the claim of them surviving past cataclysm, often accompanied by an ice age. Our sharing of this data has regularly received a mixed reception, the sphinx for example, which shows clear evidence of surviving this past event and subsequent ice age which involved a floo...

The first hard proof of a higher ancient civilization that turned everything we knew about the evolution of man on its head.

Eyes glow
Vestal virgins laugh
In the swirling smoke
As the pyramid explodes
I poke down the Nile
I see the Sphinx smile
She knows who I am
As she grabs me by the hand
Well I sat at my trial
And the pharaoh smiled
Said he knows what I am
I'm the curse, I'm the birth
I'm the reaper and the plague
And I want you little man
The Sphinx smiles and spreads her wings
The pharaoh shouts his curse of kings
Golden spheres evolve around him
And I float away on a freezing wind
I scream and shout
Turn myself to run
And the worlds disappear
I'm in a maze that sways
I've forgotten what the day is
And my body shakes with fear
I must try to escape
Before the Minotaur awakes
Now my body feels like lead
I try to open doors
But I've led me there before
This for something that I said
The Sphinx smiles and spreads her wings
The pharaoh shouts his curse of kings
Golden spheres evolve around him
And I float away on a freezing wind
Sphinx - ooh
Sphinx - ooh
The Sphinx smiles and spreads her wings
The pharaoh shouts his curse of kings
Golden spheres evolve around him
And I float away on a freezing wind
The Sphinx smiles and spreads her wings
The pharaoh shouts his curse of kings
Golden spheres evolve around him
