The Met Office (officially the Meteorological Office until 2000) is the United Kingdom's national weather service. It is an executive agency and trading fund of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and a member of the Public Data Group. The chief executive is Rob Varley and the chief scientist is Dame Julia Slingo. The Met Office makes meteorological predictions across all timescales from weather forecasts to climate change. The Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research and the National Meteorological Library and Archive are part of the Met Office. At the Met Office headquarters at Exeter in Devon is the Met Office College, which handles the training for internal personnel and forecasters from around the world.
The Met Office was established in 1854 as a small department within the Board of Trade under Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy as a service to mariners. The loss of the passenger vessel, the Royal Charter, and 459 lives off the coast of Anglesey in a violent storm in October 1859 led to the first gale warning service. In 1861 FitzRoy had established a network of 15 coastal stations from which visual gale warnings could be provided for ships at sea.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has issued a tropical storm warning for Trinidad and Tobago. The warning came into effect from 6 PM this evening. Grenada and its dependencies have also been placed on Tropical Storm warning. C News spoke to Senior Meteorologist Arlene Aaron Morrison at the Meteorological Service a short while ago, and she explained what it means for the country. The Meteorological Service says gusty winds with street and flash flooding are likely in areas of heavy showers or thundershowers. There's also the possibility of landslides and landslips. Sea conditions are also expected to become very disturbed which will adversely affect marine and coastal interests. Citizens are being advised to follow the directions of their disaster emergency managers now clo...

The Met Office has issued an amber warning of severe weather for the Southwest of England, and a yellow warning of severe weather for parts of South Wales. Severe weather is expected for parts of Southwest England and South Wales during Thursday afternoon and through into the evening. An unseasonably deep low-pressure system, centred over the Southwest Approaches early on Thursday, will push steadily northeastwards through the day to be centred over Cardigan Bay by evening. South to southwesterly winds will reach severe gale force at times, with gusts anticipated to be around 50 to 60 mph for inland parts. Some exposed coastal areas may see gusts in excess of 70 mph. Spells of heavy rain are also forecast. Such strong winds, in combination with the heavy rain, will make for difficult an...
Learn About Weather is an exciting new course that will launch in September. The course will run over four weeks, with a few hours of learning per week. Weeks one to three cover the basics of weather, starting with the big picture, moving on to synoptic charts, air masses, fronts, wind and clouds. Then at week four, there is the option of some more specialist learning. To sign up or see more information on the course visit www.futurelearn.com/courses/learn-about-weather

'The day they made it rain' - BBC Radio 4 documentary on Weather Modification, broadcast on 30th August 2001. On August 15th 1952, one of the worst flash floods ever to have occurred in Britain swept through the Devon village of Lynmouth. Thirty five people died as a torrent of 90 million tons of water and thousands of tons of rock poured off saturated Exmoor and into the village destroying homes, bridges, shops and hotels. The disaster was officially termed "the hand of God" but new evidence from previously classified government files suggests that a team of international scientists working with the RAF and UK met office had been experimenting in the area with artificial rainmaking between August 4th and August 15th. These experiments are known as Operation Cumulus, or Operation Witchdoct...
In November 2011, the UK Met Office launched DataPoint: an Application Programming Interface (API) for the release of its Open Data, in support of the Government's desire for increased transparency and economic growth. Starting with just a handful of users, the service has grown in data, functionality and usage. This year the we are making further developments, responding to user feedback and ensuring INSPIRE compliance. This presentation will describe the journey so far and a forecast for the future.

Comedian Ben Miller returns to his roots as a physicist to try to answer a deceptively simple question: what is one degree of temperature? His quest takes him to the frontiers of current science as he meets researchers working on the hottest and coldest temperatures in the universe, and to a lab where he experiences some of the strangest effects of quantum physics - a place where super-cooled liquids simply pass through solid glass. Plus, Ben installs his very own Met office weather station at home. Ben's investigations in this personal ...

Big data at the Met Office represents a fusion of observations and models, and theory. It requires major supercomputing infrastructure to perform state-of-the-art simulations, which in turn act as computational laboratories to understand how the atmosphere, ocean and climate systems work; and they are fundamental to the prediction process. The predictions made across all timescales, from hours to decades, are increasingly used to address issues around resilience to weather, climate and environmental hazards. In this Turing Lecture, Dame Julia will explain the latest developments in Met Office science and its relevance to 21st century problems, sharing the story behind weather forecasting and climate prediction and uncovering how the Met Office gathers, analyses and creates big data. Dame J...

Can you believe it - our baby girl is about to turn 2 years old already! We celebrate her birthday weekend with a toddler birthday party and she gets some AMAZING gifts - very lucky girl! This weekend was all about making River feel special so we did all of her favourite things! We were exhausted by the end so excuse our tired looking end to the vlog! Remember to answer our poll 📊 Thanks so much to MET Office for enlightening us about the importance of UV protection and for working on this video with us. Make sure you check UV levels and NOT just check if the sun is out!
