About Penny Publications

Dell Magazines

The Dell Publishing Company was founded in 1921 by George T. Delacorte, Jr., and Dell Puzzle Magazines began in 1931. Over the years, the company launched a host of different publications designed to entice readers bored with the genteel publications of the time, including both fiction and puzzle magazines.

Penny Press

In 1973, the puzzle magazine company Penny Press was launched, with a core philosophy based on providing entertaining, top-quality content at a reasonable price and supported by outstanding customer service.

Who we are today

In 1996, Dell Magazines and Penny Press were joined to create Penny Publications. The company currently publishes over 85 magazines, available on newsstands and via subscription throughout the United States and Canada.

Penny Publications puzzle magazines include Crossword, Fill-In®, Logic and Math, Sudoku, Word Seek®and Word Search, and Variety puzzle titles. The company also publishes over 60 different puzzle books, available in bookstores, through the mail, and at PennyDellPuzzles.com. These include the Dell Collector'sand Penny Press Selected Series, as well as an extensive line of general puzzle books.

In addition to the puzzle magazines, Dell Magazines brought to Penny Publications the world's leading short mystery and science-fiction magazines: Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Analog Science Fiction & Fact, and Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. Along with Dell Horoscope Magazine, these publications are the recognized leaders in their respective genres. Although these publications have been published by different owners over the years, the consistent emphasis on providing outstanding editorial content that is common to all of them is in perfect accord with the core philosophy of Penny Publications.

In 2001, through special arrangement with Three Across, Penny Publications began offering challenging, themed, New York Times style crosswords through memberships in The Crosswords Club, The Large-Print Crosswords Club, and The Uptown Puzzle Club.

With the growth of the company, our offices have moved several times, and we have expanded our warehouse to 50,000 square feet. Wherever we go and however we grow, we've never lost sight of the guiding principles established so many years ago by George Delacorte and Penny Kanter. We remain a family business committed to offering the very best puzzles at great prices, to implementing our solvers' suggestions and requests whenever possible, and to providing top-quality customer service.
