This was one of nine "Tiny Talks" given over three days at the meetup. Every year, employees submit Tiny Talk ideas on a wide range of topics (some completely random and not company-related at all, like this one) and we vote on which ones we want to hear. So, thank you to my coworkers for voting me in.
Original proposal description I submitted for this talk:
Let's say you're traveling at about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 km/h) in low earth orbit, your main engines are out of fuel, and it's your job to guide the spaceship through a fiery re-entry without burning up or skipping out of the atmosphere, navigate to your landing site, and arrive with just enough energy to make an unpowered landing on a runway which is halfway around the planet from where you started. And, of course, either you succeed on your first try, or everyone dies. So, no pressure…. In this talk, I'll show you how space shuttle designers, pilots, and autopilots managed to do just that.

All real-life photos and videos (except the last slide) were produced by NASA. Everything that looks hand-drawn was done by me on a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet in ArtRage. Animations were done in After Effects. Between the concept, outline, script, artwork, animations, rehearsals, and editing, I spent somewhere around 200 hours over two months working on it. Very little time was spent researching. In case it wasn't obvious, I've been more than a little obsessed with the topic for years now.

You need a sound system with a lot of power and a great sub (turned up to house shaking level) to get the right effect of this video. I made this for all the people who dreamed of seeing a launch in person but were never able to make the trip themselves.
Using dozens of different video sources and countless audio versions of Shuttle launches I mixed this little clip together to mimic as close an experience to the real thing as I could. I know that the exact sequence of countdown events is somewhat compressed and not time-accurate but I was going more for the 'feel' of a high energy launch experience rather than a technical documentary. Throttle Up and SRB Separation are sounds as might be heard from onboard acoustic transducers picking up resonant vibration in the vehicle's structure.
Please take care not to damage your sound equipment during playback. I did not do anything to boost the low frequency roar of the Shuttle during liftoff but the SRB and SSME thrust noise may be taxing to even high quality sub-woofers and speaker cones if played too loud.
For those who sit through the last few frames you can catch a glimpse of my home theater system I built a couple of years ago. This video really is best viewed at 165 inches or better!

Space Shuttle
The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as part of the Space Shuttle program. Its official program name was Space Transportation System (STS), taken from a 1969 plan for a system of reusable spacecraft of which it was the only item funded for development. The first of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981, leading to operational flights beginning in 1982. They were used on a total of 135 missions from 1981 to 2011, launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. Operational missions launched numerous satellites, interplanetary probes, and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST); conducted science experiments in orbit; and participated in construction and servicing of the International Space Station. The Shuttle fleet's total mission time was 1322 days, 19 hours, 21 minutes and 23 seconds.
Shuttle components included the Orbiter Vehicle (OV), a pair of recoverable solid rocket boosters (SRBs), and the expendable external tank (ET) containing liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The Shuttle was launched vertically, like a conventional rocket, with the two SRBs operating in parallel with the OV's three main engines, which were fueled from the ET. The SRBs were jettisoned before the vehicle reached orbit, and the ET was jettisoned just before orbit insertion, which used the orbiter's two Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) engines. At the conclusion of the mission, the orbiter fired its OMS to de-orbit and re-enter the atmosphere. The orbiter then glided as a spaceplane to a runway landing, usually at the Shuttle Landing Facility of KSC or Rogers Dry Lake in Edwards Air Force Base, California. After landing at Edwards, the orbiter was flown back to the KSC on the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, a specially modified Boeing 747.

Endeavour is the second of three remaining shuttles to head to its retirement home - in this case the the California Science Center. Endeavour, the youngest shuttle, replaced Challenger which tragically blew up during liftoff in 1986. During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited the earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles. It was a beautiful day - hampered by some pretty heavy duty heat waves as you'll see, given that the shuttle landed at 1 p.m. Special thanks to Jon Carr for his help on the shoot, and for the edit. Oh and... HOLY HEAT WAVES!

Space Shuttle Launch Audio - play LOUD (no music) HD 1080p
- - Created through FAIR USE for educational purposes - - STS-121 You need a sound system with a lot of power and a great sub (turned up to house shaking level) to get the right effect of this video. I made this for all the people who dreamed of seeing a launch in person but were never able to make the trip themselves. Using dozens of different video sources and countless audio versions of Shuttle launches I mixed this little clip together to mimic as close an experience to the real thing as I could. I know that the exact sequence of countdown events is somewhat compressed and not time-accurate but I was going more for the 'feel' of a high energy launch experience rather than a technical documentary. Nasa released a video of the final launch of the space shuttle Endeavour shot from multiple cameras on the solid rocket boosters. Kessler Shuttle Pod V2 Portable Dolly Video Tutorial

The first version used the Kessler Crane truss as a track to roll on. Now Kessler has released a new version that can still use the truss, but also has its own track system if you do not own a crane. The new version 2 Shuttle Pod also has a removable cheese plate for multiple camera/tripod head mounting options on the carriage. But the biggest improvement is the grabber/keeper wheel kit. Bill Bennett, ASC was invited by Arri and NASA to shoot the last space shuttle launch at Cape Kennedy in Florida. Stephan Ukas-Bradley was the Arri technical representative working with me. This was shot with an Alexa camera, rolling at 120 fps, positioned in a protective housing, 1,000 feet from the launch pad. The camera was triggered remotely.

Let's say you're traveling at about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 km/h) in low earth orbit, your main engines are out of fuel, and it's your job to guide the spaceship through a fiery re-entry without burning up or skipping out of the atmosphere, navigate to your landing site, and arrive with just enough energy to make an unpowered landing on a runway which is halfway around the planet from where you started. And, of course, either you succeed on your first try, or everyone dies. So, no pressure…. In this talk, I'll show you how space shuttle designers, pilots, and autopilots managed to do just that.

All real-life photos and videos (except the last slide) were produced by NASA. Everything that looks hand-drawn was done by me on a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet in ArtRage. Animations were done in After Effects. Between the concept, outline, script, artwork, animations, rehearsals, and editing, I spent somewhere around 200 hours over two months working on it. Very little time was spent researching. In case it wasn't obvious, I've been more than a little obsessed with the topic for years now.

Throttle Up and SRB Separation are sounds as might be heard from onboard acoustic transducers picking up resonant vibration in the vehicle's structure.
Please take care not to damage your sound equipment during playback. I did not do anything to boost the low frequency roar of the Shuttle during liftoff but the SRB and SSME thrust noise may be taxing to even high quality sub-woofers and speaker cones if played too loud.
For those who sit through the last few frames you can catch a glimpse of my home theater system I built a couple of years ago. This video really is best viewed at 165 inches or better!

This footage was shot with a RED Epic, at 5K resolution, at 96 frames per second with a Canon 800mm 5.6 lens.

NASA's Shuttle fleet was retired last year after 30 years of flight. Endeavour is the second of three remaining shuttles to head to its retirement home - in this case the the California Science Center.
Endeavour, the youngest shuttle, replaced Challenger which tragically blew up during liftoff in 1986.
During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited the earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles.
It was a beautiful day - hampered by some pretty heavy duty heat waves as you'll see, given that the shuttle landed at 1 p.m.
Special thanks to Jon Carr for his help on the shoot, and for the edit.

I have been using the original Kessler Shuttle Pod for almost a year. The first version used the Kessler Crane truss as a track to roll on.
Now Kessler has released a new version that can still use the truss, but also has its own track system if you do not own a crane.
The new version 2 Shuttle Pod also has a removable cheese plate for multiple camera/tripod head mounting options on the carriage.
But the biggest improvement is the grabber/keeper wheel kit. These additional wheels work to hold the carriage to the underside of the rails. The result is a dolly system that can craw up a tree vertical or even be operated upside down!
This system is also compatible with the ElekrtaDRIVE motors and Oracle controller giving you the power to run the Shuttle Pod remotely, record/playback movement and create amazing motion control timelapses.

Nasa released a video of the final launch of the space shuttle Endeavour shot from multiple cameras on the solid rocket boosters. The first version used the Kessler Crane truss as a track to roll on. Now Kessler has released a new version that can still use the truss, but also has its own track system if you do not own a crane. The new version 2 Shuttle Pod also has a removable cheese plate for multiple camera/tripod head mounting options on the carriage. But the biggest improvement is the grabber/keeper wheel kit. These additional wheels work to hold the carriage to the underside of the rails. The result is a dolly system that can craw up a tree vertical or even be operated upside down! NASA Space Shuttle Launch - STS 135
Bill Bennett, ASC was invited by Arri and NASA to shoot the last space shuttle launch at Cape Kennedy in Florida. Stephan Ukas-Bradley was the Arri technical representative working with me. This was shot with an Alexa camera, rolling at 120 fps, positioned in a protective housing, 1,000 feet from the launch pad. The camera was triggered remotely.

Let's say you're traveling at about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 km/h) in low earth orbit, your main engines are out of fuel, and it's your job to guide the spaceship through a fiery re-entry without burning up or skipping out of the atmosphere, navigate to your landing site, and arrive with just enough energy to make an unpowered landing on a runway which is halfway around the planet from where you started. And, of course, either you succeed on your first try, or everyone dies. So, no pressure…. In this talk, I'll show you how space shuttle designers, pilots, and autopilots managed to do just that.

All real-life photos and videos (except the last slide) were produced by NASA. Everything that looks hand-drawn was done by me on a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet in ArtRage. Animations were done in After Effects. Between the concept, outline, script, artwork, animations, rehearsals, and editing, I spent somewhere around 200 hours over two months working on it. Very little time was spent researching. In case it wasn't obvious, I've been more than a little obsessed with the topic for years now.

You need a sound system with a lot of power and a great sub (turned up to house shaking level) to get the right effect of this video. I made this for all the people who dreamed of seeing a launch in person but were never able to make the trip themselves.
Using dozens of different video sources and countless audio versions of Shuttle launches I mixed this little clip together to mimic as close an experience to the real thing as I could. I know that the exact sequence of countdown events is somewhat compressed and not time-accurate but I was going more for the 'feel' of a high energy launch experience rather than a technical documentary. Throttle Up and SRB Separation are sounds as might be heard from onboard acoustic transducers picking up resonant vibration in the vehicle's structure.
Please take care not to damage your sound equipment during playback. I did not do anything to boost the low frequency roar of the Shuttle during liftoff but the SRB and SSME thrust noise may be taxing to even high quality sub-woofers and speaker cones if played too loud.
For those who sit through the last few frames you can catch a glimpse of my home theater system I built a couple of years ago. This video really is best viewed at 165 inches or better!

NASA's Endeavour Shuttle lands at Los Angeles International airport on its final flight atop a 747.
This footage was shot with a RED Epic, at 5K resolution, at 96 frames per second with a Canon 800mm 5.6 lens.

NASA's Shuttle fleet was retired last year after 30 years of flight. Endeavour is the second of three remaining shuttles to head to its retirement home - in this case the the California Science Center.
Endeavour, the youngest shuttle, replaced Challenger which tragically blew up during liftoff in 1986.
During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited the earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles.
It was a beautiful day - hampered by some pretty heavy duty heat waves as you'll see, given that the shuttle landed at 1 p.m.
Special thanks to Jon Carr for his help on the shoot, and for the edit.

I have been using the original Kessler Shuttle Pod for almost a year. The first version used the Kessler Crane truss as a track to roll on.
Now Kessler has released a new version that can still use the truss, but also has its own track system if you do not own a crane.
The new version 2 Shuttle Pod also has a removable cheese plate for multiple camera/tripod head mounting options on the carriage.
But the biggest improvement is the grabber/keeper wheel kit. These additional wheels work to hold the carriage to the underside of the rails. The result is a dolly system that can craw up a tree vertical or even be operated upside down!
This system is also compatible with the ElekrtaDRIVE motors and Oracle controller giving you the power to run the Shuttle Pod remotely, record/playback movement and create amazing motion control timelapses.
