Sverre Fehn (14 August 1924 – 23 February 2009) was a Norwegian architect. His highest international honour came in 1997, when he was awarded both the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the Heinrich Tessenow Gold Medal.
Fehn was born in Kongsberg, Buskerud. He received his architectural education shortly after World War II in Oslo, a crisis course that would later become an independent school under various names during the next decades, today known as the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. He quickly became the leading Norwegian architect of his generation.
In 1952–1953, during travels in Morocco, he discovered vernacular architecture, which was to deeply influence his future work. Later he moved to Paris, where he worked for two years in the studio of Jean Prouvé, and where he knew Le Corbusier. On his return to Norway, in 1954, he opened a studio of his own. Most of his designs were unrealized and when he won the Pritzker Prize in 1997 11 of his buildings were completed.
An architect is a person who plans, designs, and oversees the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design and construction of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use. Etymologically, architect derives from the Latin architectus, which derives from the Greek (arkhi-, chief + tekton, builder), i.e., chief builder.
Professionally, an architect's decisions affect public safety, and thus an architect must undergo specialized training consisting of advanced education and a practicum (or internship) for practical experience to earn a license to practice architecture. Practical, technical, and academic requirements for becoming an architect vary by jurisdiction (see below).
The terms architect and architecture are also used in the disciplines of landscape architecture, naval architecture and often information technology (for example a network architect or software architect). In most jurisdictions, the professional and commercial uses of the terms "architect" and "landscape architect" are legally protected.

Architectural Design, also known as AD, is a UK-based architectural journal first launched in 1930 as Architectural Design and Construction. The journal is currently published by John Wiley & Sons, and is edited by Helen Castle since 2001.
In its early days it was more concerned with the British scene, but gradually became more international. In 1946 Monica Pidgeon became editor and developed the magazine under the ownership of Standard BICHOCatalogue Company. Contributors during the sixties included Theo Crosby and Kenneth Frampton.
It moved away from presenting mostly news towards theme-based issues. During the late 1970s and 1980s when it was the bastion of Postmodernism, with frequent articles and special editions guest-edited by Charles Jencks, the theoretical father of postmodern architecture. At that time the journal was the mouthpiece of the publishers Academy Editions (marketed in the USA under St.Martins Press), based in Leinster Gardens, London (they also had their own bookstore), and they published very many well-known titles concerned with postmodernism. The long-standing Editor-in-Chief, until the mid-1980s, was Andreas C. Papadakis.
Studio 2 was a daily (weeknights) current affairs newsmagazine on TVOntario in Ontario, Canada. The show won several Gemini Awards, and was hosted by Steve Paikin and Paula Todd (who replaced original co-host Mary Hynes in the show's third season), and first aired in 1994. TVOntario announced the program's termination on June 29, 2006. The final episode aired on June 30, and was replaced that fall with a new series hosted by Paikin, The Agenda.
Rather than a newscast style, Studio 2 tackled certain current news stories affecting many Canadians with a focus often on Ontario. Regular topics on the show included healthcare, federal politics, provincial politics, terrorism, foreign affairs, the environment, the arts and many others.
The show usually performed a deep analysis, often with open discussions among experts or even interviewing specific figures involved in the issues. Also included were arts and current affairs documentary segments, live performance, and in-depth personal interviews.

The architecture of Norway has evolved in response to changing economic conditions, technological advances, demographic fluctuations and cultural shifts. While outside architectural influences are apparent in much of Norwegian architecture, they have often been adapted to meet Norwegian climatic conditions, including: harsh winters, high winds and, in coastal areas, salt spray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architecture_of_Norway).

The island of Vega, on Norway’s northern coast, is located just 100 km from the Arctic Circle. While home to about 1,200 people, it’s an unlikely place for Oslo residents to build a summerhouse, given the travel distance and the how short the summers are that far north. However the three sibling owners of this new cottage had family roots going back to the island and, having spent summers there as children, they wanted to return with their own families. The Vega Archipelago has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for “the way generations of fishermen/farmers have, over the past 1,500 years, maintained a sustainable living in an inhospitable seascape near the Arctic Circle”. The number of fishermen has dropped significantly, but the shoreline is still dotted with clust...
There are 500,000 cabins in Norway for 5 million people, explains Oslo architect Marianne Borge. While the size of these second homes has grown in recent decades, Borge wanted to return to the simple living roots of traditional Norwegian hytter (cottages). According to Borge, the cabin tradition is about forgoing the comforts of modern homes to escape into nature: no electricity, a wood-burning stove for cooking and heating and an outhouse or field as a toilet. Her Woody15 is a 15 square meter one-room cabin with no kitchen, bathroom or electricity (but complete with wood-burning stove). She attempted a modern take on the traditional log cabins by creating an all-wood (Norwegian spruce) cottage from 29 cross-laminated timber (CLT) pieces. The tiny prefab can be assembled in one day (thoug...

Short Description: The building takes its form after the dominating axis from Glöshaugen towards Hesthagen, creating a intriguing journey up the elevation. While the building has a distinct character and shape it preserves the symbolic effect of the surrounding park and hill. Joining industrial design and architecture in one building in order to reinforce interdisciplinary studies. Creating an innovation centre and incubation spaces for up and coming entrepreneurs where they can socialise with students.

Serpentine Gallery director Julia Peyton-Jones discusses the spinning top-shaped 2007 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion designed by Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen in the next instalment of our exclusive video series. Danish-Icelandic artist Eliasson and Norwegian architect Thorsen of Snøhetta collaborated to design the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in 2007. "It's the only time an artist has been involved in designing the pavilion," says Peyton-Jones in the movie. "We wanted to broaden out the selection to see if by introducing an artist there would be a different kind of view on the whole project. Of course, there was." Eliasson and Thorsen created a timber-clad structure with a ramp spiralling around the outside. The sides of the ramp featured a series of white louvres made from twisted c...

Arkitektur begynner med ideer. Noen ideer blir realisert.

“Doing architecture is listening.” Some of the greatest architects of our time – from Peter Zumthor to Jean Nouvel and Diébédo Francis Kéré – here share their inspirational thoughts on what it is that makes global architecture work. Swiss architect Peter Zumthor (b. 1943) always has a certain “feeling for the space”, which enables him to react as an architect. This he also attributes to having background knowledge of the place, which is easier in our modern, global world. The real challenge is to understand the local people and their subtext. “I’m a contextual architect, but for me the context isn’t only the site.” French architect Jean Nouvel (b. 1945) considers architecture to be part of a wider historical and cultural context. A building, he feels, always has roots, and a building can...

Lecture date: 2008-02-27 Last in a series of open lunch time seminars by Peter Cook that delve into the world of 20th- and 21st-century architecture: its values, its gossip, the culture of the design process, tricks of the trade, the relation between pedagogic architecture and cause-and-effect design and research. An underlying premise of the seminars is that architecture is such a rich territory that efforts to divert young architects interest away from things to abstracts are pernicious and need to be redressed. Peter Cook graduated from the AA in 1960 and taught there from 1964 to 1990.
