Dear (manga)

Dear (ディア, Dia) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Cocoa Fujiwara. It was serialized in Square Enix's shōnen manga magazine Monthly Gangan Wing between the August 2002 and January 2008 issues. Square Enix published 12 tankōbon volumes in Japan. The manga is set in the same world as Fujiwara's other work, Watashi no Ookami-san.

Plot

This story is about a girl named Chiruha who is a Lycanthrope, a mythical creature thought to have died out. She lives in the mountains alone in an abandoned hut with only a small television. Chiruha decides to leave her home and live with the humans. When there she discovers her childhood friend, Kisara. Kisara, though, has no memories of when he was friends with Chiruha. What he does remember is that he was supposedly cursed with immortality by a Lycanthrope. He believes Chiruha gave him immortality as curse and hates her for it, although this is not the case. Kisara was the adopted son of a rich nobleman and was being bullied when he was saved by Chiruha. They became friends, but after Chiruha was attacked by some villagers they both run away to live on their own. Two men who were sent to get Kisara and kill Chiruha accidentally hurt Kisara fatally. During that moment Chiruha unintentionally gave Kisara her immortality. When being used as a human sacrifice to drive away demons, Kisara remembers this and does not know what to feel since he can no longer hate her but can't go back to the past. He decides to just keep going forward and asks the captain if he could stop being the military's pawn.

Plot

Detective Ma investigates a mass murder at the residence of Ms. Park. Five were killed with two survivors: Ms. Park and her caretaker, Mi-Ja. Mi-Ja then recounts her story to Ma.

Mi-Ja, the caretaker of her ex-teacher, Ms. Park, organizes a reunion with her ex-classmates: Se-Ho, Eun-Young, Dal-Bong, Sun-Hee, Myung-Ho, and Jung-Won. Each resent Ms. Park for different reasons: the couple Se-Ho and Eun-Young because of Ms. Park's belittling of their poverty; Dal-Bong because of his cast leg caused by Ms. Park punishing him to do repeated squatting after losing a relay during a track and field meet; Sun-Hee because of Ms. Park's criticizing of her former obesity; and Myung-Ho because of his trauma of Ms. Park sexually abusing him. The friendless and quiet Jung-Won, once ridiculed for defecating in the class, stopped attending school when his mother was hit by a car and has only recently met with Ms. Park again since the previous year. Nevertheless, they all try to maintain a facade of jolliness for the reunion.

Dear You

Dear You is Jawbreaker's fourth and final full-length studio album. Released on September 12, 1995 through DGC Records, it is their only major label album.

Singer/guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach underwent surgery on his vocal chords shortly before the recording of Dear You. Containing much less raspy vocals, the record had higher production values compared to the band's previous albums. Schwarzenbach later confirmed that the move to DGC was necessary for the band to stay around, as they had been on the verge of breaking up.

Reception

At the time of the album's release, much of the band's pre-existing fanbase did not receive the album well. As Jawbreaker had made many previous comments to the media declaring their disdain of the major-label music industry–claiming many times that they would not sign to a major label–many fans saw the band signing to DGC Records (for a reported advance of one million dollars) as a "betrayal." The slicker production, courtesy of a producer known at the time for working with Green Day, and Schwarzenbach's changed vocal style, did not go over well with many fans who did give the album a chance. After Jawbreaker's breakup, many of these same fans came to reconsider the album in the context of the band's legacy, and changed their opinion to a more positive view.
