On Thursday, April 12, 1973, a Navy P-3C Orion and a Convair 990 operated by NASA collided on approach to Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, California.
Both aircraft lost control and crashed on the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course, a half mile short of the runway. 16 of 17 people aboard the two aircrafts lost their lives.
Petty Officer Third Class Bruce N. Mallibert, who was sitting in the back of the P3-Orion, fell 120 feet from the plane during the collision, sustaining significant injuries including a severed spinal cord and a brain injury that led to a 93 day coma. Bruce defied the odds and survived to tell his story.
Ray Kong was a Senior at Sunnyvale High School at the time of the accident. He was in the middle of a sanctioned golf match with Mountain View High School when he looked up and witness the two planes collide and crash just a hundred feet from where he was standing.
Ray and another golfer soon found Bruce Mallibert's body on the golf course. Thinking he was dead, Ray covered him with a parachute out of respect, not realizing that he was still alive. It was a short time later that the parachute was pealed back and Bruce was transferred to a local area hospital.
Tom Moore, a Lieutenant with Sunnyvale's Public Safety Department, also witnessed the crash and responded immediately.
Riding on the smallest engine in Sunnyvale's inventory, Tom and his partner were able to get access to the golf course by squeezing through a tunnel utilized by golf carts to go under the 237 freeway. Tom immediately saw the parachute covering Bruce's body and warned his driver to maneuver around it.
Once on scene, both Sunnyvale and Mountain View Public Safety workers teamed together and immediately made efforts to rescue the crews of both planes. Unfortunately, it was discovered that the crews most likely passed away on impact of the crash.

Moffett Federal Airfield
Moffett Federal Airfield (IATA: NUQ, ICAO: KNUQ, FAA LID: NUQ), also known as Moffett Field, is a joint civil-military airport located in an unincorporated part of Santa Clara County between southern Mountain View and northern Sunnyvale, California, USA. On November 10, 2014, NASA announced that it would be leasing the airfield to Google for 60 years.
The airport is near the south end of San Francisco Bay, northwest of San Jose. Formerly a United States Navy facility, the former naval air station is now owned and operated by the NASA Ames Research Center. Tenant military activities include the 129th Rescue Wing of the California Air National Guard, operating the MC-130P Combat Shadow and HH-60G Pave Hawk aircraft, as well as the adjacent Headquarters for the 7th Psychological Operations Group of the U.S. Army Reserve. Until 28 July 2010, the U.S. Air Force's 21st Space Operations Squadron was also a tenant command at Moffett Field, occupying the former Onizuka Air Force Station. In addition to these military activities, NASA also operates several of its own aircraft from Moffett.

On Thursday, April 12, 1973, a Navy P-3C Orion and a Convair 990 operated by NASA collided on approach to Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, California.
Both aircraft lost control and crashed on the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course, a half mile short of the runway. 16 of 17 people aboard the two aircrafts lost their lives.
Petty Officer Third Class Bruce N. Mallibert, who was sitting in the back of the P3-Orion, fell 120 feet from the plane during the collision, sustaining significant injuries including a severed spinal cord and a brain injury that led to a 93 day coma. Bruce defied the odds and survived to tell his story.
Ray Kong was a Senior at Sunnyvale High School at the time of the accident. He was in the middle of a sanctioned golf match with Mountain View High School when he looked up and witness the two planes collide and crash just a hundred feet from where he was standing.
Ray and another golfer soon found Bruce Mallibert's body on the golf course. Thinking he was dead, Ray covered him with a parachute out of respect, not realizing that he was still alive. It was a short time later that the parachute was pealed back and Bruce was transferred to a local area hospital.
Tom Moore, a Lieutenant with Sunnyvale's Public Safety Department, also witnessed the crash and responded immediately.
Riding on the smallest engine in Sunnyvale's inventory, Tom and his partner were able to get access to the golf course by squeezing through a tunnel utilized by golf carts to go under the 237 freeway. Tom immediately saw the parachute covering Bruce's body and warned his driver to maneuver around it.
Once on scene, both Sunnyvale and Mountain View Public Safety workers teamed together and immediately made efforts to rescue the crews of both planes. Unfortunately, it was discovered that the crews most likely passed away on impact of the crash.

Ames was originally founded to conduct wind-tunnel research on the aerodynamics of propeller-driven aircraft; however, its role has expanded to encompass spaceflight and information technology. Ames plays a role in many NASA missions. It provides leadership in astrobiology; small satellites; robotic lunar exploration; the search for habitable planets; supercomputing; intelligent/adaptive systems; advanced thermal protection; and airborne astronomy. Ames also develops tools for a safer, more efficient national airspace. The center's current director is Eugene Tu.
The site is mission center for several key current missions (Kepler, the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission, Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph) and a major contributor to the "new exploration focus" as a participant in the Orion crew exploration vehicle...
Missions
Although Ames is a NASA Research Center, and not a flight center, it has nevertheless been closely involved in a number of astronomy and space missions.
The Pioneer program's eight successful space missions from 1965 to 1978 were managed by Charles Hall at Ames, initially aimed at the inner solar system. By 1972, it supported the bold flyby missions to Jupiter and Saturn with Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11. Those two missions were trail blazers (radiation environment, new moons, gravity-assist flybys) for the planners of the more complex Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions, launched five years later. In 1978, the end of the program saw a return to the inner solar system, with the Pioneer Venus Orbiter and Multiprobe, this time using orbital insertion rather than flyby missions.
Lunar Prospector was the third mission selected by NASA for full development and construction as part of the Discovery Program. At a cost of $62.8 million, the 19-month mission was put into a low polar orbit of the Moon, accomplishing mapping of surface composition and possible polar ice deposits, measurements of magnetic and gravity fields, and study of lunar outgassing events. Based on Lunar Prospector Neutron Spectrometer (NS) data, mission scientists have determined that there is indeed water ice in the polar craters of the Moon. The mission ended July 31, 1999 when the orbiter was guided to an impact into a crater near the lunar south pole in an (unsuccessful) attempt to analyze lunar polar water by vaporizing it to allow spectroscopic characterization from Earth telescopes...

Moffett Field Air Tragedy - The Story of Sole Survivor, Bruce Mallibert
On Thursday, April 12, 1973, a Navy P-3C Orion and a Convair 990 operated by NASA collided on approach to Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, California. Both aircraft lost control and crashed on the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course, a half mile short of the runway. 16 of 17 people aboard the two aircrafts lost their lives. Petty Officer Third Class Bruce N. Mallibert, who was sitting in the back of the P3-Orion, fell 120 feet from the plane during the collision, sustaining significant injuries including a severed spinal cord and a brain injury that led to a 93 day coma. On Thursday, April 12, 1973, a Navy P-3C Orion and a Convair 990 operated by NASA collided on approach to Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, California.

Ray Kong was a Senior at Sunnyvale High School at the time of the accident. He was in the middle of a sanctioned golf match with Mountain View High School when he looked up and witness the two planes collide and crash just a hundred feet from where he was standing.
Ray and another golfer soon found Bruce Mallibert's body on the golf course. Thinking he was dead, Ray covered him with a parachute out of respect, not realizing that he was still alive. It was a short time later that the parachute was pealed back and Bruce was transferred to a local area hospital.
Tom Moore, a Lieutenant with Sunnyvale's Public Safety Department, also witnessed the crash and responded immediately.
Riding on the smallest engine in Sunnyvale's inventory, Tom and his partner were able to get access to the golf course by squeezing through a tunnel utilized by golf carts to go under the 237 freeway. Tom immediately saw the parachute covering Bruce's body and warned his driver to maneuver around it.
Once on scene, both Sunnyvale and Mountain View Public Safety workers teamed together and immediately made efforts to rescue the crews of both planes. Unfortunately, it was discovered that the crews most likely passed away on impact of the crash.
