"The Biggest Solar Energy Production Base in the Whole World," or more simply, Solar Valley. A clean energy technology hub that China hopes will rival Silicon Valley in California. The ambitious plans for the park were launched by Himin Solar Energy, whose headquarters is located at the Sun-Moon Mansion, which is currently the largest solar powered office building in the world.. outside of Dezhou, China.
Himin Solar Energy, started by Huang Ming, the 'Sun King' of China, is already the main tenant of Solar Valley and their large office building is completely powered by the sun. He has very ambitious goals about making Solar Valley a reality, and has already attracted about 100 companies, and spawned factories as well as a research center. The hope is that this clean energy epicenter will help propel China's development of renewable energy technology and installation.
Solar Valley is located just outside of Dezhou, which is making some progress towards in building its reputation as a clean energy city. The city already requires that all new buildings be equipped with solar water heaters of the type made by Huang's company, and last year they spent $10 million to install solar lighting along miles of road. Chiel Boonstra, a Dutch architect who heads up the International Solar Cities Congress, says that Dezhou "will be a new center of gravity for renewable technologies." It's just a shame that rural farmers are being relocated into block apartments in the city to make way for the grand new development.

Chinese solar tech company announces purchase of IBM West Campus in East Fishkill
In a formal announcement on Friday morning at Marist College, state and local officials welcomed Linuo Solar Group Company to the United States. The hi-tech Chinese manufacturer recently purchased the abandoned IBM West Campus in East Fishkill, and plans to invest $100 million, bringing up to 1,000 new jobs to the Mid Hudson Valley.
Dr. Bevan Zhang, Linuo's international director, thanked state and local leaders for their assistance in bringing his company to New York. Company executives visited California, Arizona, Utah, Texas, Florida and New Jersey, before choosing New York as their American headquarters. "We get all kinds of entertainment, parties," Zhang recalled, "even bring us to NBA game."
He cited the cooperation of Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy, Congressman Maurice Hinchey, the Empire State Development Corp., Central Hudson, and The Solar Energy Consortium of Kingston (TSEC), as instrumental in Linuo's decision to base their U.S. operations in Dutchess County. The Mid-Hudson & Dutchess Economic Development Corporations, and Dutchess Regional Chamber of Commerce were also credited.
"That makes New York State so attractive," Zhang remarked.
"I feel I need to make sure our business finds a location where we get strong support," Zhang explained. "You cannot imagine a Chinese company from the outside coming here, and run by themselves, it's just impossible."
Vincent Cozzolino, President of TEAC, agreed. "Bringing any company to NY is always hard, because there is competition all over the country," he said. "This is a re-purposing of an existing asset," Cozzolino said of the old IBM plant -- housing one million square feet of manufacturing space. "There will be lots of local partners that will have to participate with this in the supply chain, and Linuo has a strategy that says they would like to work locally," Cozzolino observed. "This thing about 'a rising tide floats all boats,' really should take us forward."
Linuo was founded in 1994 with $70,000 in startup capital, and less than 50 employees, Zhang said. Today it is a full company with seven subdivisions, $1.3 billion in revenue, and 30,000 employees. "We wanted to create a product that can be a benefit to improve human life," Zhang noted. "We did that in China," with mass production of affordable silicon tubes, providing hot water to poor neighborhoods. Developed countries in Europe also prefer Linuo's technology, Zhang added.
In the United States, Linuo's products are used in the NYC subway system. Kingston manufacturer SolarTech, located at Tech City (another former IBM plant), will be using Linuo's PV cells to make integrated solar panels.

Simi Valley
Simi Valley is a synclinal valley in Southern California in the United States. It is an enclosed or hidden valley surrounded by mountains and hills. It is connected to the San Fernando Valley to the east by the Santa Susana Pass & 118 freeway, and in the west the narrows of the Arroyo Simi and 118 freeway connect to Moorpark and Ventura, California. The relatively flat bottom of the valley contains soils formed from shales, sandstones and conglomerates eroded from the surrounding hills of the Santa Susana Mountains to the north, which separate Simi Valley from the Santa Clara River Valley, and the Simi Hills.

A valley is a low area between hills, often with a river running through it.
In geology, a valley or dale is a depression that is longer than it is wide. The terms U-shaped and V-shaped are descriptive terms of geography to characterize the form of valleys. Most valleys belong to one of these two main types or a mixture of them, (at least) with respect to the cross section of the slopes or hillsides.
Valley terminology
A valley in its broadest geographic sense is also known as a dale. A valley through which a river runs may also be referred to as a vale. A small, secluded, and often wooded valley is known as a dell or in Scotland as a glen. A wide, flat valley through which a river runs is known in Scotland as a strath. A mountain cove is a small valley, closed at one or both ends, in the central or southern Appalachian Mountains which sometimes results from the erosion of a geologic window. A small valley surrounded by mountains or ridges is sometimes known as a hollow. A deep, narrow valley is known as a cwm (also spelled combe or coombe). Solar energy
Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis.

It's just a shame that rural farmers are being relocated into block apartments in the city to make way for the grand new development.

Chinese solar tech company announces purchase of IBM West Campus in East Fishkill
In a formal announcement on Friday morning at Marist College, state and local officials welcomed Linuo Solar Group Company to the United States. The hi-tech Chinese manufacturer recently purchased the abandoned IBM West Campus in East Fishkill, and plans to invest $100 million, bringing up to 1,000 new jobs to the Mid Hudson Valley.
Dr. Bevan Zhang, Linuo's international director, thanked state and local leaders for their assistance in bringing his company to New York. Company executives visited California, Arizona, Utah, Texas, Florida and New Jersey, before choosing New York as their American headquarters. "We get all kinds of entertainment, parties," Zhang recalled, "even bring us to NBA game."
He cited the cooperation of Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy, Congressman Maurice Hinchey, the Empire State Development Corp., Central Hudson, and The Solar Energy Consortium of Kingston (TSEC), as instrumental in Linuo's decision to base their U.S. operations in Dutchess County. The Mid-Hudson & Dutchess Economic Development Corporations, and Dutchess Regional Chamber of Commerce were also credited.
"That makes New York State so attractive," Zhang remarked.
"I feel I need to make sure our business finds a location where we get strong support," Zhang explained. "You cannot imagine a Chinese company from the outside coming here, and run by themselves, it's just impossible."
Vincent Cozzolino, President of TEAC, agreed. "Bringing any company to NY is always hard, because there is competition all over the country," he said. "This is a re-purposing of an existing asset," Cozzolino said of the old IBM plant -- housing one million square feet of manufacturing space. "There will be lots of local partners that will have to participate with this in the supply chain, and Linuo has a strategy that says they would like to work locally," Cozzolino observed. "This thing about 'a rising tide floats all boats,' really should take us forward."
Linuo was founded in 1994 with $70,000 in startup capital, and less than 50 employees, Zhang said. Today it is a full company with seven subdivisions, $1.3 billion in revenue, and 30,000 employees. "We wanted to create a product that can be a benefit to improve human life," Zhang noted. "We did that in China," with mass production of affordable silicon tubes, providing hot water to poor neighborhoods. Developed countries in Europe also prefer Linuo's technology, Zhang added.
In the United States, Linuo's products are used in the NYC subway system. Kingston manufacturer SolarTech, located at Tech City (another former IBM plant), will be using Linuo's PV cells to make integrated solar panels.

It's just a shame that rural farmers are being relocated into block apartments in the city to make way for the grand new development.

Chinese solar tech company announces purchase of IBM West Campus in East Fishkill
In a formal announcement on Friday morning at Marist College, state and local officials welcomed Linuo Solar Group Company to the United States. The hi-tech Chinese manufacturer recently purchased the abandoned IBM West Campus in East Fishkill, and plans to invest $100 million, bringing up to 1,000 new jobs to the Mid Hudson Valley.
Dr. Bevan Zhang, Linuo's international director, thanked state and local leaders for their assistance in bringing his company to New York. Company executives visited California, Arizona, Utah, Texas, Florida and New Jersey, before choosing New York as their American headquarters. "We get all kinds of entertainment, parties," Zhang recalled, "even bring us to NBA game."
He cited the cooperation of Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy, Congressman Maurice Hinchey, the Empire State Development Corp., Central Hudson, and The Solar Energy Consortium of Kingston (TSEC), as instrumental in Linuo's decision to base their U.S. operations in Dutchess County. The Mid-Hudson & Dutchess Economic Development Corporations, and Dutchess Regional Chamber of Commerce were also credited.
"That makes New York State so attractive," Zhang remarked.
"I feel I need to make sure our business finds a location where we get strong support," Zhang explained. "You cannot imagine a Chinese company from the outside coming here, and run by themselves, it's just impossible."
Vincent Cozzolino, President of TEAC, agreed. "Bringing any company to NY is always hard, because there is competition all over the country," he said. "This is a re-purposing of an existing asset," Cozzolino said of the old IBM plant -- housing one million square feet of manufacturing space. "There will be lots of local partners that will have to participate with this in the supply chain, and Linuo has a strategy that says they would like to work locally," Cozzolino observed. "This thing about 'a rising tide floats all boats,' really should take us forward."
Linuo was founded in 1994 with $70,000 in startup capital, and less than 50 employees, Zhang said. Today it is a full company with seven subdivisions, $1.3 billion in revenue, and 30,000 employees. "We wanted to create a product that can be a benefit to improve human life," Zhang noted. "We did that in China," with mass production of affordable silicon tubes, providing hot water to poor neighborhoods. Developed countries in Europe also prefer Linuo's technology, Zhang added.
In the United States, Linuo's products are used in the NYC subway system. Kingston manufacturer SolarTech, located at Tech City (another former IBM plant), will be using Linuo's PV cells to make integrated solar panels.

The Valley’s temperate climate and high solar insolation has already attracted investment in over 120 solar energy facilities, which are either already operating or in the planning stages. They illustrate the potential for the Valley to be a major contributor to the state’s renewable energy portfolio. However, the Valley is also home to some of the richest, most productive farmland in the world while containing some of our most imperiled plants, animals and natural habitats. As a result, identifying good locations for solar projects can entail significant controversy. To help reduce land-use conflicts associated with solar siting, Conservation Biology Institute (CBI), Berkeley Law’s Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE), and Terrell Watt Planning Associates, with input from the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR), undertook a stakeholder-led process, called the “Solar and the San Joaquin Valley Identification of Least-Conflict Lands Project.”
Initiated in June 2015, the goal of the project was to explore how multiple and diverse parties could quickly (within six months) identify least-conflict lands for solar photovoltaic development from their perspectives. The process generated a series of stakeholder group maps that identified their highest and lowest priority areas. Ultimately, by combining the results of each stakeholder group’s mapping exercises, the project identified 470,000 acres of least-conflict land, amounting to roughly 5% of the 9.5 million acres in the stakeholder study area within the Valley. The stakeholder work utilized the Data Basin San Joaquin Valley Gateway (www.sjvp.databasin.org) throughout the process.
This project resulted in a credible snapshot of significant least-conflict lands for solar photovoltaic development. But it also underscores the remaining complex issues that warrant additional conversation, if the Valley is to realize its full potential as part of California’s renewable energy future. These issues include how best to balance renewable energy interests with agricultural interests and conservation of wildlife and natural communities in a rapidly changing environment. This effort is therefore just a start. The opportunity remains to continue the conversation and act on consensus recommendations that can simultaneously protect sensitive wildlife, conserve farmland, and help meet California’s renewable energy goals while promoting economic development in the San Joaquin Valley.

The team designs, builds, and races solar-powered vehicles to compete in the World Solar Challenge, a major international event held every other year in Australia. In the 2013 World Solar Challenge, the Stanford car, Luminos, placed fourth, the best performance in Stanford history, earning them the title of America's top solar car team. A new team and a new car will compete in the next World Solar Challenge in October 2015.
Unlike many universities that compete in Australia, the Stanford Solar Car Project consists primarily of undergraduates, providing students a unique opportunity to gain valuable hands-on engineering and business experience, while raising community awareness of the power of solar energy and the need for lighter, more efficient vehicles.

Less than a decade ago, Water Valley, Mississippi was a forgotten small town: there were 18 empty storefronts lining it’s four-block Main Street and plenty of decaying homes for sale. Located only twenty miles from the University of Mississippi and the pricey town of Oxford (also former home to William Faulkner), it was well-placed for revival.
In 2002, Mickey Howley and his wife Ole Miss professor Annette Trefzer bought an $80,000 century-old home and one of those empty storefronts for $60,000. They were early pioneers in the effort to rehabilitate the old 19th Century railroad town- turning their former drugstore into the Bozarts art gallery, but it took the formation of a community to create real change.
“In the last seven years,” explained Howley- now director of the Water Valley Main Street Association - in 2015 to a White House meeting on rural placemaking, “and remember Water Valley is 3,500 people with a four-block long downtown, this team has been instrumental in bringing 88 new jobs to downtown. Adding 26 new businesses. Fixing buildings and I don’t just mean façade jobs, but major renovations in 29 buildings. Adding 14 upper floor apartments. In that new business mix we’ve added four new restaurants, three art galleries, one grocery store, one doctor’s office and one brewery.”
Howley calls it “reimagining” structures: a foundry is now a brewery, a service station is now a restaurant, a drugstore is now an art gallery and a department store is now a grocery store/school.
That grocery store/school is the BTC Old-Fashioned Grocery and the Base Camp Coding Academy, founded by Washington DC transplants and husband and wife team Kagan Coughlin and Alexe van Beuren. They moved to town in 2007 and soon after bought a 10,000-square-foot brick building on Main Street that was slated for demolition. After three years of renovations, they opened the grocery store and cafe and most recently the scholarship-only coding school, “designed to train students to be software developers in 12 months”.
A couple years ago, Coughlin left his 6-figure salary working in software at an Oxford company to focus full-time on reviving Main Street. He, and van Beuren, bought five more abandoned buildings (formerly the Blu-Buck Mercantile) and have rehabbed the storefronts which now house a furniture store, a chiropractor “a man who builds golfing simulators all over the country” and the second floor have been redone as apartments and a boutique hotel.
There are plenty of individual stories, but everyone we spoke to, point to the combined efforts of the residents as the true force for change. “To paraphrase poet William Butler Yeats,” wrote Howley in his speech to the White House group, “If the center cannot hold, things fall apart. We keep the center together. For all of us. We must have a strong core, a strong downtown for the whole town to be that great “good place.”

This webinar will discuss the science and safety of photovoltaic solar and the growing trend of planting pollinator habitat under and around ground-mounted solar panels. In 2016 alone, nearly 2,500 acres of solar sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin were seeded with millions of native flowers and grasses including black-eyed susans, side-oats grama, purple prairie clover, butterfly milkweed, and calico aster.
Eric Udelhofen, development director from OneEnergy Renewables, will discuss site selection for large-scale solar arrays, including existing land use, utility interconnection, topography and other environmental factors. He will give an overview of what the development process looks like, discuss construction and provide insight into what an installation actually looks like.
Rob Davis, of 501(c)3 nonprofit Fresh Energy, will discuss its pioneering work in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Bee Lab, Monarch Joint Venture, the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont, and others to establish standards as to what constitutes “pollinator friendly solar.” Rob will delve into the history of how pollinator-friendly solar was imported from the UK, where it is a common practice. Rob will outline how Fresh Energy and Audubon Minnesota built a bipartisan coalition of support for a statewide standard for vegetation on solar sites, including support from prominent agricultural legislative leaders and advocacy organizations.
Rob and Eric will both discuss the public and environmental benefits provided by pollinator-friendly solar sites as well as standard practices of pollinator meadow management on solar sites, and will describe some of the benefits to solar project owners over the long-term, including reduced maintenance expenses, improved stormwater infiltration, and greater community acceptance.

Solar Impulse will take off for its first flight from Abu Dhabi (Al Bateen Executive Airport, AZI/OMAD) in the United Arab Emirates, to Muscat (Muscat International Airport, MCT/OOMS) in the Sultanate of Oman. The pilot will fly the zero-fuel airplane on about 400km (215NM) for an estimated time of 12 hours. Masdar, Host Partner for the round-the-world, hosted Solar Impulse during the reassembly of Si2 and the final flight preparations. Masdar City is an example of the shared vision for the use of renewable energy and clean technologies.
