The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands (Marshallese: Aolepān Aorōkin M̧ajeļ), is an island country located near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, slightly west of the International Date Line. Geographically, the country is part of the larger island group of Micronesia. The country's population of 53,158 people (at the 2011 Census) is spread out over 29 coral atolls, comprising 1,156 individual islands and islets. The islands share maritime boundaries with the Federated States of Micronesia to the west, Wake Island to the north,Kiribati to the south-east, and Nauru to the south. About 27,797 of the islanders (at the 2011 Census) live on Majuro, which contains the capital.
Micronesian colonists gradually settled the Marshall Islands during the 2nd millennium BC, with inter-island navigation made possible using traditional stick charts. Islands in the archipelago were first explored by Europeans in the 1520s, with Spanish explorer Alonso de Salazar sighting an atoll in August 1526. Other expeditions by Spanish and English ships followed. The islands derive their name from British explorer John Marshall, who visited in 1788. The islands were historically known by the inhabitants as "jolet jen Anij" (Gifts from God).

http://democracynow.org - Among the poets from around the world who came to the U.N. climate summit in Morocco to highlight the impacts of climate change and inspire climate action was Marshall Islands poet and climate activist Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner. She reads her poem, "Two Degrees." Climatologists say that the best-case scenario of immediate and dramatic curbs on carbon emissions is that planetary surface temperatures will increase by at least 2 degrees Celsius in the coming decades. "At a climate change conference, a colleague tells me 2 degrees is just a benchmark for climate negotiations. I tell him 2 degrees is a gamble," says Jetnil-Kijiner. "At 2 degrees, my islands, the Marshall Islands, is already under water. This is why our leaders push for 1.5." Democracy Now! is an independe...

A tiny nation in the Pacific Ocean has begun legal action to force Britain, Pakistan and India to start dismantling their nuclear stockpile. The Marshall Islands is trying to convince judges at the International Court of Justice to hear the case. The islands were the site of nuclear weapons tests in the 1940s and 1950s.

Giff Johnson spoke on the current nuclear situation in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. His talk highlighted formerly secret US government documents about its nuclear testing program and how these alter the "official" version of the Bravo hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll in 1954. He also addressed recent developments concerning the nuclear issue from the Pacific Islands Forum held in Majuro, a UN Special Rapporteur's report on the US nuclear testing legacy, and other issues in the Marshall Islands. Johnson is the author of the recently published biography Don't Ever Whisper—Darlene Keju: Pacific Health Pioneer, Champion for Nuclear Survivors. This book tells the powerful story of Marshall Islander Darlene Keju, who championed the cause of nuclear weapons test survivors when others ...

Following the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, conservatives trumpeted the idea of American imperialism. On October 15, the cover of William Kristol's Weekly Standard carried the headline, "The Case for American Empire." Rich Lowry, editor in chief of the National Review, called for "a kind of low-grade colonialism" to topple dangerous regimes beyond Afghanistan. The columnist Charles Krauthammer declared that, given complete U.S. domination "culturally, economically, technologically and militarily," people were "now coming out of the closet on the word 'empire.'" The New York Times Sunday magazine cover for January 5, 2003, read "American Empire: Get Used To It." In the book "Empire", Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri argued that "the decline of Empire has begun". Hardt says the Iraq War is...

It's an excellent colonizer, capable of surviving long periods of time floating along until chance might have it bump into a patch of warm soil on which to root. The coconut is an indispensable ingredient in Polynesian life. Its milk provides a nourishing beverage. It is also dried into Copra for use in cooking oil and body oil. The coconuts are even used by children as flotation devices! But, most of all, it is the basis for almost every traditional dish in the Polynesian diet. Basic staple di...

This is one of my all time favorite memories from Namdrik Atoll. Getting invited out on a day trip with some of the elders and local fisherman of the island to build new traditional rock fishing traps. Something that I am told has not been done in a long time. It was a long, hard, and tedious process of collecting rocks and coral to pile up to create the walls of the V shaped traps with semi circle heads. It was breath taking to watch the men stand and wait with such patience for the fish to start coming over the reef in small school before they could scare and corral the fish in the traps. It is a fishing method they the islanders have done for generations and has allowed the Marshallese the ability to survive in such a remote and harsh environment. Thanks for sharing your culture w...

Between 1946 and 1958, the U.S. detonated 67 nuclear devices in and around the Marshall Islands. The impact of these tests on the Marshallese people was profound - in terms of both actual radioactive exposure and the displacement of people from their home islands due to contamination and to accommodate the U.S. military.
Lost somewhere in the ocean, this island looks like a paradise, doesn’t it? But Bikini Atoll was actually home to numerous nuclear testing programs that turned the picturesque island of Bikini into a radioactive wasteland. The inhabitants were forced to abandon their homes, and even today this remains hazardous for living organisms: the abnormally high level of radiation recorded here can cause cancer. Between 1946 and 1958, 23 nuclear devices were detonated by the United States at seven test sites located on the reef, inside the atoll, in the air, or underwater. In 1996, the Bikini Council authorized diving operations as a means to generate income for Bikini islanders currently and upon their eventual return. The tours, limited to fewer than a dozen experienced divers a week, cost more ...

Marshall Islands Travel Video - The air is tangy with sea salt on the thousand or so slender, flat coral islands that make up the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). Living on these narrow strips of land between ocean and lagoon, the Marshallese are expert fishers and navigators, having long been reliant on the sea. Local faces reflect the islands history. In the late 1700s, after 2000 years of isolation, these Micronesian islands were variously visited, settled, colonised or occupied by British, Russians, Germans, Japanese and Americans (at first by missionaries, later by defence forces). Today the more developed atolls have a sense of all these influences, with well-stocked stores carrying international groceries, restaurants serving the food of several nations, and basketball court...
The Marshall Islands are a sprawling chain of volcanic islands and coral atolls in the central Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and the Philippines. In the northwest, Bikini Atoll’s largely undisturbed waters, used as a ship graveyard after World War II, are now a popular wreck dive site. Near Majuro Atoll, which holds the islands' capital and largest settlement, the coral reef at Kalalin Pass teems with marine life. After almost four decades under US administration as the easternmost part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the Marshall Islands attained independence in 1986 under a Compact of Free Association. Compensation claims continue as a result of US nuclear testing on some of the atolls between 1947 and 1962. The Marshall Islands have been home to the US Army Post Kwajal...

Climate change may seem far away in some parts of the world, but for Pacific Islanders, its effects are very real. In August 2016, anthropologist Jennifer Newell led a Constantine S.
