A cul-de-sac /ˈkʌldəsæk/, dead end (British, Canadian, American, South African English, and Australian English), closed, no through road, a close (British, Canadian, and Australian English), no exit (New Zealand English) or court (American, Australian English) is a street with only one inlet/outlet. While historically built for other reasons, one of its modern uses is to calm vehicle traffic.
Culs-de-sac have appeared in plans of towns and cities before the automotive 20th century, particularly in Arab and Moorish towns. The earliest example of cul-de-sac streets was unearthed in the El-Lahun workers village in Egypt, which was built circa 1885 BC. The village is laid out with straight streets that intersect at right angles; akin to a grid, but irregular. The western part of the excavated village, where the workers lived, shows fifteen narrow and short dead-end streets laid out perpendicularly on either side of a wider, straight street; all terminate at the enclosing walls.
Dead End Street is a 1982 film directed by Yaky Yosha. Inspired by a true story, it is about a young prostitute who participated in a documentary about her efforts to abandon the streets, only to commit suicide hours before the movie was to be broadcast.
Like Yosha's previous two films, Dead End Street represented Israel at Cannes. Bruce Springsteen contributed three songs to the soundtrack.
Alice, a young street walker, receives an opportunity of a lifetime when a television crew casts her to star in a documentary about prostitution in Tel-Aviv. Alice, a 17-year-old girl from the gutters of the city, is exposed for the first time to the glitzy world of make believe.
For her personal safety and the crew’s convenience, Alice is invited, during the shoot, to stay in the home of Yoram, the director and Mary, his producer-girlfriend. Alice's presence exceeds all expectations as she lays out her gloomy life story in front of the cameras. When Mary notices that Yoram gets more than just professionally involved with Alice, she wraps the production as quickly as possible. Alice doesn't want to go back to the streets, but she doesn’t belong in the ‘decent’ world either. Alice finds herself in a dead end.
"Dead End Street" is a song by the British band The Kinks from 1966, written by main songwriter Ray Davies. Like many other songs written by Davies, it is to some degree influenced by British Music Hall. It was originally released as a non-album single, but has since been included as one of several bonus tracks from the Face to Face CD. The song, like many others by the group, deals with the poverty and misery found in the lower classes of English society. The song was a big success in the UK, reaching #5 on the singles charts, but only reached #73 in the United States. In 1976 it ranked #72 on New Musical Express's list of the Top 100 Singles of All Time. Some labels list the song as "Deadend Street".
A mimed promotional film (precursor to the modern music video) was produced for the song in late 1966. It was filmed on Little Green Street, a diminutive eighteenth century lane in North London, located off Highgate Road in Kentish Town.
The film was shot in black and white, and featured each member of the band dressed as an undertaker, as well as playing various other characters throughout. With a length of roughly 3:15 in total, it represents one of the first true "music videos". Dave Davies says that the BBC disliked the film, claiming it was in bad taste.
Frei is a former municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located in the present-day Kristiansund Municipality between the Kvernesfjorden and Freifjorden. The municipality existed from 1838 until 2008 and upon its dissolution, it included the island of Frei and the smaller surrounding islands, totaling about 65 square kilometres (25 sq mi).
The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Rensvik, the largest village on the island, located on the northern end of the island. Other main villages that were in Frei Municipality include the village of Nedre Frei, located on the southern end of the island and the village of Kvalvåg, located on the eastern side of the island. The main church for the municipality was Frei Church, located in the village of Nedre Frei.
The municipality was named after the island of Frei (Old Norse: Freiðr). The meaning of the name is unknown, but is maybe derived from fríðr which means "good" or "beautiful". Until 1889, the name was written Fredø.
Frei is an island in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The 62.5-square-kilometre (24.1 sq mi) island lies south of the town of Kristiansund in the Nordmøre region of the county. The main villages on the island include Rensvik in the north, Kvalvåg in the east, and Nedre Frei in the south. The island was part of the old Frei Municipality from 1838 until 2008 when the island was merged into Kristiansund Municipality.
The Viking-era Battle of Rastarkalv, between Haakon I of Norway and the sons of Eric I of Norway, took place near the village of Nedre Frei in 955 AD.
The highest point on the island is the 629-metre (2,064 ft) mountain Freikollen. The island is covered with mountains, pine forests, marshes, and sparse other vegetation. The Freifjorden lies to the east and south, the Kvernesfjorden and Bremsnesfjorden lie to the west, and the Bolgsvaet bay and Omsundet strait lie to the north. The islands of Nordlandet, Kirkelandet, and Innlandet lie north of Frei; the island of Averøya lies to the west; the islands of Bergsøya and Aspøya lie to the southeast; and the island of Tustna lies to the northeast.

Wake up now, this is the time you've waited for. Far below, where shadows fester as they grow, An army thousands strong, obsessed by right and wrong, They sense their time is coming near. So they turn towards the light from their region of the night, Marching on and on, They near the air, it won't be long. You know you're on the way out, It's just a matter of time. You thought you'd rule the world forever, Long live the king, and don't spare the loser. After all, you're not what you thought you were at all. You're just a natural fact, another cul-de-sac On nature's hard unfeeling trail. Now all those dreams of old will be stories left untold, Cut off in your prime, extinct until the end of time. You know you're on the way out, It's just a matter of time. You thought you'd rule the worl...

Well, I was raised on a back street,
Time's were tough, but kind of bittersweet.
Left school when I was still a child,
Hit the streets and started running wild.
Hanging out in the neighborhood,
People said, "They're up to no good!"
Never thought I'd ever make it through,
Hey boy, what you gonna do?
Crosstown traffic, sirens wailing, screaming in my ear.
It's got me on the run, gotta move on out of here.
I'm on a dead end street, on a dead end street,
Well it's got me beat, on a dead end street.
I can't go no further, won't somebody rescue me,
From this dead end street, oh yeah.
They still talk about the big fight,
On the backstreet at midnight.
Everybody heard the gunfire,
Saw him dragged into the Black Maria.
Now my best friend is doing time,
He's committed to a life of crime.
Got a feeling I'll be next in line,
I wonder how can I get out in time?
I stepped into a movie, this can't be reality.
If I wasn't so lucky, I wonder where I'd be?
I'm on a dead end street, on a dead end street,
Well it's got me beat, on a dead end street.
I can't go no further, won't somebody rescue me,
From this dead end street, oh yeah.

It's got me on the run, gotta move on outta here.
I'm on a dead end street, on a dead end street,
Well it's got me beat, on a dead end street.
It's got me walking, it's got me talking,
I'm on a dead end street, I'm on a dead end street.
