Attackers have opened fire at the Iranian parliament and Ayatollah Khomeini's mausoleum in the capital, Tehran, causing a number of casualties. Heavy gunfire could be heard on videos filmed from outside parliament, and there are reports that a security guard has been killed.
At the mausoleum several people were injured, and at least one suicide bomber died. The so-called Islamic State group (IS) has claimed it carried out the attacks. It did not provide any evidence.

The start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has been marred by deadly terror attacks in recent days in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Hundreds of people have been killed and many injured in Baghdad, London, Kabul, Tehran, Melbourne, and Paris. ISIS claimed a few of the attacks, while a group affiliated with the Taliban has claimed another. Most recently, attackers went on a shooting spree in Iran's capital, Tehran, on Wednesday in the parliament building, while a gun-and-bomb attack targeted the tomb of the republic's revolutionary founder. At least 12 people were killed in the assaults, and there has not yet been any claim of responsibility.

Oil reserves in Iran
Proved oil reserves in Iran, according to its government, rank fifth largest in the world at approximately 150 billion barrels (24×10^9 m3) as of 2014, although it ranks third if Canadian reserves of unconventional oil are excluded. This is roughly 10% of the world's total proven petroleum reserves. At 2006 rates of production, Iran's oil reserves would last 98 years if no new oil was found.
According to NIOC, Iran recoverable liquid hydrocarbon reserves at the end of 2006 was 138,4 billion barrels. Apart from these considerable reserves, from the outset of oil industry in Iran in 1908 to the end of 2007, Iran produced some 61 billion barrels of oil.
Iran has more than a century of history in exploration and production; the first successful exploration well was Masjid Suleiman-1 on May 26, 1908. Since then, based on the latest oil and gas reports, 145 hydrocarbon fields and 297 oil and gas reservoirs have been discovered in Iran, with many fields having multiple pay zones. A total of 102 fields are oil and the remaining 43 are gas, and there are 205 oil reservoirs and 92 natural gas reservoirs. According to Iran Energy Balance Sheet (2009, in Persian), 78 of these fields are currently active, with 62 onshore and 16 offshore, leaving 67 fields inactive at present. Some 23 hydrocarbon fields lie in border areas and are shared between Iran and adjacent countries, including Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Turkmenistan.

Tehran
Tehran (
pronunciation ; Persian: Tehrān – تهران) is the capital of Iran and Tehran Province. With a population of around 9 million in the city and 16 million in the wider metropolitan area, Tehran is the largest city and urban area of Iran, the second largest city in Western Asia, and the 3rd largest in the Middle East. It is ranked 29th in the world by the population of its metropolitan area.
In the Classical era, part of the present-day city of Tehran was occupied by a Median city, which in the Avesta occurs as Rhaga. It was destroyed by the Mongols in the early 13th century, and remains now as a city in Tehran Province, located towards the southern end of the modern-day city of Tehran.
Tehran was first chosen as the capital of Iran by Agha Mohammad Khan of the Qajar dynasty in 1796, in order to remain within close reach of Iran's territories in the Caucasus, at that time still part of Iran, and to avoid the vying factions of previous Iranian dynasties. The capital has been moved several times throughout the history, and Tehran is the 32nd national capital of Iran.

The start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has been marred by deadly terror attacks in recent days in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Hundreds of people have been killed and many injured in Baghdad, London, Kabul, Tehran, Melbourne, and Paris. ISIS claimed a few of the attacks, while a group affiliated with the Taliban has claimed another. Most recently, attackers went on a shooting spree in Iran's capital, Tehran, on Wednesday in the parliament building, while a gun-and-bomb attack targeted the tomb of the republic's revolutionary founder. At the mausoleum several people were injured, and at least one suicide bomber died. The so-called Islamic State group (IS) has claimed it carried out the attacks. It did not provide any evidence.

Barberry rice (zereshk polow) recipe - Iranian (Persian) Cuisine
Known as "celebration rice" or "jewelled rice", this is often cooked for weddings. It is made with wild, red barberries (zereshk), which give the dish its jewel-like appearance and an exotic, slightly tart taste. When it comes to Tehran, it's impossible to avoid politics and easy to overlook the Iranian city's thriving culinary scene. In our first installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, our host Gelareh Kiazand introduces us to the bustling street food offerings in the city.
We begin our journey at the capital city's Grand Bazaar, since that's where commodities first arrive. Gelareh beelines for the market's food stands, where she samples dried fruits and nuts while waiting out the line at Moslem Restaurant, frequented by up to 5,000 kebab connoisseurs daily—well worth it for her favorite tah chin. For our second installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh visits Nayeb, a white-tablecloth restaurant that's been serving up succulent kebabs in Iran for over 120 years—and even got its initial footing in the bazaar. Their signature dish, koobedih, is a spiced meat kebab dipped in onion juice and cooked over an open flame, served with rice, somagh (sour powdered sumac) butter, and raw egg.
After dining with Nayeb's fifth generation, great-great-great-great-granddaughter Sogol, Gelareh heads to the Baghe Saba Teahouse—a cultural hub akin to a Parisian salon that was once a mens-only enclave but now welcomes families. There, Gelarah is greeted by a buffet of salads, stuffed eggplant, barley soup, and every size of sabzi koofteh (Persian meatballs).

Known as "celebration rice" or "jewelled rice", this is often cooked for weddings. It is made with wild, red barberries (zereshk), which give the dish its jewel-like appearance and an exotic, slightly tart taste. It is usually served with chicken, as it is in this recipe – the chicken, while delicious, is considered the accompaniment and the rice is the centrepiece.
Ingredients
4 cups long-grain rice, rinsed
3 tbsp salt, plus 1 tsp salt extra
3 pinches saffron threads
sugar
½ tsp turmeric
¼ tsp sweet paprika
½ tsp baharat
¼ tsp pepper
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tbsp lemon juice
250 ml hot water
1 chicken, quartered
1 onion, sliced
olive oil
1 large potato, sliced (like potato scallops)
4 tbsp butter
1 cup dried barberries, rinsed
2 tbsp almonds, cut into slivers, for decoration
2 tbsp pistachios, cut into slivers, for decoration
Cook's notes
Oven temperatures are for conventional; if using fan-forced (convection), reduce the temperature by 20˚C. | We use Australian tablespoons and cups: 1 teaspoon equals 5 ml; 1 tablespoon equals 20 ml; 1 cup equals 250 ml. | All herbs are fresh (unless specified) and cups are lightly packed. | All vegetables are medium size and peeled, unless specified. | All eggs are 55-60 g, unless specified.
Instructions
Soaking time 1 hour
Put the rice and salt in a bowl and cover with water. Soak for 1–2 hours.
Meanwhile, place the saffron and a generous pinch of sugar in a mortar and grind to a fine powder. Place in a cup and fill three-quarters full with hot water. Set aside.
Combine the spices, pepper and extra salt in a small bowl. Add the garlic, lemon juice, hot water and 1 tbsp of the saffron water. Stir well.
Preheat the oven to 160°C. Wash the chicken pieces, pat dry and place in a deep baking tray. Scatter with the onion and pour over the spice and garlic mixture. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour.
Drain the rice, add to a pot or large saucepan and cover with water. Add 2–3 tbsp of olive oil if desired to stop the grains sticking to each other. Boil the rice for 10–15 minutes or until al dente. Drain in a colander.
Put the pot back on the stove and add 3–4 tbsp of oil. Lay the sliced potato in the base (to protect the rice, but also to create a delicious edible crust of rice and potato). Top with the drained rice and cover with a lid. Cook until the rice begins to steam (about 3–5 minutes), then turn the heat to low and wrap the lid in a tea towel (covering the underside) and place back on the pot. The tea towel catches the condensation, stopping it from dripping back onto the rice. Leave to steam for 45–60 minutes. By the end you should have perfect, fluffy, separated rice.
Heat half the butter in a frying pan and add the barberries. Sauté for a few minutes then add 2 tbsp of sugar and 2 tbsp of the saffron water. Stir briefly then remove from the heat.
Place a layer of rice on a serving platter, followed by a sprinkling of barberries, nuts and a little saffron water. Keep layering, mounding up into the shape of a cone. Leave some barberries and nuts for the top. Melt the remaining butter and mix together in a bowl with the remaining saffron water. Mix in a cup of rice.
Arrange the chicken quarters around the platter then spoon the saffron rice on top of the mound. Add a final sprinkling of barberries and nuts.

There is also a cooking competition where three chefs from each province have 3 hours to cook their best traditional appetizers, main courses and deserts! Then will get judged by local and national judges/chefs on quality, presentation and basically the whole cooking and serving experience. This is all to show the importance of food tourism and the role our traditional foods can play in attracting tourists to every corner of this beautiful land of Iran. This festival is a nationwide event happening in few months where every couple of week, one province becomes host and 2-3 other neighboring provinces participate.

Persian (or Iranian) food should be more prevalent in New York, but can be found at an amazing steam table hidden inside a generic pizzeria and at a cultural center that serves casual Persian bites alongside tea and events.
As a note, this episode was filmed well over a year ago before the Executive Order to ban immigrants from the country of Iran. At that time, I didn't feel the need to get too political - if the video was filmed today, I would have taken a bigger stand about the importance of this culture and its gracious people here in the United States.
And since the filming of this video, Cafe Nadery has sadly succumbed to raising rents and closed. Taste of Persia remains open and is better than ever.

The Conflict Kitchen in the American city of Pittsburgh serves food only from countries with which the United States is involved in some sort of conflict.
“The culture of the food actually gives you some hints about the people and what their life is like”, Conflict Kitchen’s cultural director and chef Robert Sayre explains to Design Indaba at the 2013 Spier Secret Festival.
Serving Iranian and Cuban takeout dishes, the emphasis is not about educating the public on the conflict with those countries, their governments or politics, but rather about the day-to-day lives of the people who live there – as well as their opinions and thought processes.
“We see eating as almost a bait to draw people in. Food is the way people are comfortable approaching another culture, whereas they’re not comfortable sitting down and having a political discussion with people they’ve never met,” Sayre says. “Even that interaction has value.”
The server in the hatch of the takeout restaurant instigates a conversation with the customer about the country whose cuisine is on sale. The servers are not necessarily experts on those countries but their job is to get some sort of dialogue going.
Other projects Sayre is involved in are Skype dinners, The Foreigner and the country speeches. The Skype dinners he describes as an “international dinner party”. Food is prepared in Pittsburgh and in Tehran with Conflict Kitchen's collaborators there and screens are set up in each place. With the screens, it’s as if the two tables are next to each other in one room and the people in both countries eat together and converse with each other in real time.
The Conflict Kitchen's new premises in the downtown area of Oakland feature Iranian and Cuban takeout. “The Foreigner” is a project where a person in Pittsburgh and a person in Iran each wear headphones and microphones. They are the human embodiment or avatar of each other. So a patron at Conflict Kitchen can sit and eat lunch with the American who acts as a channel to communicate what his or her Iranian counterpart is saying, and vice versa.
There’s also The Iranian and The Cuban speeches where collaborators in those countries write a speech that they would like President Barack Obama to deliver. Then an actor who looks like Obama delivers it in a public square in Pittsburgh.
“The U.S. is such a big power and such a bully around the world,” Sayre says. The speeches are a way for people in the conflict countries to have the experience of the American president saying what they’d like to hear him saying, he adds.
A giant billboard bearing messages sent in by members of the public is displayed in Pittsburgh. Anybody can send a message and Sayre says many artists do – usually with a quote or sometimes simply with a phone number that begins an entirely new interactive experience when the number is dialled.
One message that’s been posted to the billboard reads: Like a tragic comedy, the U.S. Gov.’s actions have actually helped the Iranian Gov. and hurt the people of Iran – Iranian American.

In his book, Nationalism, Anthony Smith shares three important terms that we should understand on some level if we are truly going to understand what nationalism is. He first defines the global phenomena of nationalism as, “An ideological movement for attaining and maintaining autonomy, unity and identity for population which some of its members deem to constitute an actual or potential ‘nation.’” Ideologies, cultural norms, religions… all play their part in nationalism. Smith then suggest that one’s nationalism is shaped by the nation he or she finds themselves in; regarding the nations, Smith suggests that a nation can be defined as “a named human community residing in a perceived homeland, and having common myths and a shared history, a distinct public culture, and common laws and customs for all members.”
Another important concept we need to wrap our minds around is national identity. National identity is the most fluid of Nationalism and the concept of a nation. A person’s “national identity” flows from his or her sense of belonging to a state or nation. One’s national identity flows out of language, cuisine, and skin color. A person’s civic identity can collide with a person’s national identity, as is the case in Taiwan where the people consider themselves Taiwanese while their civic state (China) considers them Chinese. Another example of the conflict between one’s national and civic identity can be found in Myanmar with the Burmese (the majority tribe) and 14 minority tribes who are currently struggling to maintain their cultural heritage.
The positive expression of a person’s national identity is patriotism where a person’s national and civic identities are celebrated; its most extreme form is known as Chauvinism, which is a form of patriotism of national superiority and glory. Many in the world would consider America Chauvinistic. Nationalism gives birth to one’s national identity, but one’s national identity, while remaining a product of one’s nationalism, can take on it’s own personality.
When America were attacked on December 7, 1941 the national identity of the United States became a common bond. After the attack on 9/11 we had a shortage of American flags because every person want to be shore to display one as an act of unity as a citizen of the USA. Songs written in honor of our nation, the victims of 9/11, or our national resolve of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness topped the charts. Ours was a nation resolved to see justice carried out on those responsible for 9/11, and after 10 years many Americans celebrated in their homes, streets, at public events, and around the world with the announcement by our president that Osama Bin Laden was killed.
This year two of the nine films nominated for best picture championed American nationalism. Argo is the story about the covert operation to rescue six Americans who escaped and found refuge in in the home of the Canadian ambassador after militants stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran. The other film nominated by the academy was Zero Dark Thirty, a movie retelling the greatest manhunt for the world’s most dangerous terrorist, Osama Bin Laden.
I do believe that the United States is the best alternative to a human government within an imperfect world. As creatures that bear the image of the Almighty, our purpose is twofold: 1) To love God with our whole being, and 2) to love our neighbor as our selves. A democracy affords us the freedom to do both. Yet, we are forced to ask the question: What does the Bible say concerning the nations and the ideologies that have shaped them?

On the streets of Tehran
These shots were made in Tehran in October and November last year. It seemed like shooting handheld was the appropriate way to go in most situations, so there's plenty of driving and motion shots in this video. Those familiar with Tehran (تهران) will recognize the Milad Tower, the Freedom Tower, the main bazaar and perhaps some other places. Tehran is the largest city in Iran, and is expanding rapidly. Traffic can be daunting at times, and getting around in rush hour might cause some serious headaches. But the spirit of the people I found refreshing, as in many other places in Iran.

Once Upon a Time in Iran: Cloudio and Riccardo (Everyday life in Tehran)
Cloudio and Riccardo are two Italians who have decided to live in Iran. Riccardo is a professional chef and owns his own restaurant in northern Tehran where he serves Italian food. Cloudio has been living in Tehran for some time and speaks Farsi fluently. He started to learn Farsi in the University of Venice in Italy and travelled to Iran to complete his education, now he even has his own student which he tutors. Iran - Visit to Qom
Qom is located in Central Iran, just South of the capital Tehran. It is one of the holiest places in the country, and Shia scholars and students from around the world come here to study in the religious schools (madrasehs). Pilgrims visit the important Hazrat-e Masumeh, which is easily recognized as the centre piece of the city. I visited Qom in the days leading up to Ashura, the most important religious event on the Shia calender. The city seemed even busier than my guidebook had told me, and the emotions running through the shrine and beyond were overwhelming. Although somewhat off the general 'tourist radar', visiting Qom provided an interesting glimpse into the religious heartland of Iran, and therefore well worth the effort.

As for many tourist visiting Iran, the capital Tehran has been our first stop and introduction to the country. We used our time in the city to explore the best things to do in Tehran by focussing on attractions and spots that are interesting for younger travelers paired with important historic landmarks.
Beside typical tourist attractions we wanted to see what the real Iran is like and reached out to local friends for further recommendations. This way we got to go to places locals use to hangout, have a coffee or simply relax from the hustling and bustling city center. We used various local transport options and explain how you can get around on the cheap. Last but not least we give a few recommendations for typical persian dishes you should try when visiting.
This part of the trip was executed within 1,5 weeks - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do in Tehran:

More western tourists are visiting Iran after a thaw in relations following last year's nuclear deal.
STORY-LINE:
Iranians are seeing more foreign tourists on their streets a year after the landmark nuclear deal that ended a decade of standoff with the world community.
Home to beautiful mountains, breathtaking historical buildings and priceless artwork it has lots to offer the intrepid holiday maker.
UNESCO, the United Nations culture agency, has 21 sites in Iran on its World Heritage List. They include the ruins of Persepolis and Pasargadae, the mosques and palace at Meidan Emam of Isfahan and other sites.
Beyond that, local skiers and snowboarders boast of Iran's mountains, while Tehran enjoys a growing modern art scene.
Shiite pilgrims also travel to different sites in the country. In the last few years, Iran reported having around 5 million tourists a year, most coming from Iraq and other neighbouring countries.
Tehran's historical Grand Bazaar, situated in the south, is the largest and most important market in the capital.
Every day thousands of traders and ordinary people come to the bazaar to do business, shopping or just pass through.
Jacques Genevieve Sanchez is a French tourist visiting the bazaar. She came to Iran with her husband a week ago.
She says they started planning this trip years ago but felt now was the right time to finally make that happen.
"(We travelled to Iran) because we thought of the country many, many years ago and it seems to them that it is easiest today because there is a new connection between Europe and Iran and we notice that it's true", she says.
Another tourist is Stefan Moeller from Germany. The businessman chose Iran as a holiday destination for him and his wife and one-year-old son.
Stefan says he has found it an interesting and safe destination despite all the negative publicity it gets.
"European people are afraid about Iran. They think there is war and some bad guys here but it is all nice here. Because it's so funny and you can have a lot of fun without those things that we have in Europe", he says.
However there are lots of Middle Eastern laws here that are worlds apart from life in Europe.
Alcohol is illegal and women are required by law to cover their hair. Homosexuals can also face the death penalty in Iran.
While it may be getting more popular with Europeans, Americans make up less than one percent of tourists.
However despite US travel warnings, an American luxury tour operator is currently promoting a new trip to Iran in May.
Illinois-based Abercrombie & Kent is offering the tour to those willing to take the risk, describing it as the first opportunity to see an Iran opening up to the West after the nuclear deal.
The cost of the 12-day tour starts at 5,600 US dollars.
Iran and America haven't had formal diplomatic relations since the 1979 US Embassy takeover following the country's Islamic Revolution.
The Swiss Embassy currently looks after American interests in the country.
Abercrombie & Kent says that interchange between American tourists and the Iranian people will help bridge the gap between the two nations.

A large recreation area. One of the biggest parks in Tehran. Provides pathways for walking and shade for picnics and relaxation. A popular meeting place for young people and a picnic area for families.
Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art
An art museum. Designed by Iranian architect Kamran Diba, who employed elements from traditional Persian architecture. Was inaugurated in 1977. Most of the museum area is located underground.

Those familiar with Tehran (تهران) will recognize the Milad Tower, the Freedom Tower, the main bazaar and perhaps some other places.
Tehran is the largest city in Iran, and is expanding rapidly. Traffic can be daunting at times, and getting around in rush hour might cause some serious headaches. But the spirit of the people I found refreshing, as in many other places in Iran.

I can honestly say I never thought about traveling to Iran and I am still not sure what made me go there other than to simply experience firsthand one of the most mislead countries in the world. What I found was an incredibly hospitable and friendly people, a land full of spectacular landscapes, a fascinating culture and history and despite a extremely difficult political situation the iranians has nothing to do with the image the media show us. This short video represents only a fraction of what I saw and experienced but being one of the most stimulating and enriching journeys of my life let me invite you to watch it and maybe change the image you may have of this beautiful country.
Sinceramente nunca había pensado en viajar a Irán y aún no se muy bien qué me llevó a hacerlo más allá de una sana curiosidad por conocer de primera mano uno de los países más herméticos y con peor fama del mundo. Pero lo que encontré fue unas gentes increíblemente hospitalarias y amables, una tierra repleta de paisajes espectaculares, una cultura y una historia fascinantes y a pesar de una situación política muy dura, Irán poco tiene que ver con la imagen que nos llega a través de los medios de comunicación. Demasiados lugares me quedaron por visitar y este video representa únicamente una ínfima parte de todo lo que vi y viví pero siendo uno de los viajes más estimulantes y enriquecedores que he vivido os invito a verlo y así quizás conseguir cambiar algo de la visión que tengáis de este preciosos país.

A documentary on baobabs of Madagascar (56 mn)
By their sheer size and original shapes, baobabs are among the most remarkable trees on the planet. Relatively unknown in Madagascar, these giants are currently threatened by deforestation. To study them, in the heart of their forests, Cyrille Cornu and Wilfried Ramahafaly travel by pirogue, exploring 400 km of wild and isolated coastline in the southwest of Madagascar.

Qom is located in Central Iran, just South of the capital Tehran. It is one of the holiest places in the country, and Shia scholars and students from around the world come here to study in the religious schools (madrasehs). Pilgrims visit the important Hazrat-e Masumeh, which is easily recognized as the centre piece of the city.
I visited Qom in the days leading up to Ashura, the most important religious event on the Shia calender. The city seemed even busier than my guidebook had told me, and the emotions running through the shrine and beyond were overwhelming. Although somewhat off the general 'tourist radar', visiting Qom provided an interesting glimpse into the religious heartland of Iran, and therefore well worth the effort.

In the post-JCPOA era Iran is increasingly feeling the need to tap into other markets other than western markets, in a bid to develop its industries.
After the nuclear deal, China’s 110-strong delegation headed by the country’s highest ranking political official came to Iran. Only a few months later, came the South Korean president at the head of a 236-member business delegation. His team was accompanied by five ministers and an army of reporters.
The Iranian Embassy in the South Korean capital Seoul announced it’s had more than 400 visa applications by the country’s business mogul. US imposed sanctions against Iran had discouraged many east Asian countries from doing business with Iran but now things are different.
In 2010, South Korea's GS Engineering & Construction Company signed a deal with Iran to sweeten gas in Phases 6 to 8 of Iran’s South Pars gas field; a contract worth 1.2 billion dollars. But it had to withdraw from it in the face of US sanctions. But now, they Koreans can pick it up where they left off without having to worry about Washington’s reaction. On their recent trip to Iran, the South Korean business delegation was presented with appealing oil contracts, and the two sides signed several memoranda of understanding.
In order to develop the South Pars gas field, the world’s largest in the Persian gulf and to make up for its missed extraction targets compared to the Qataris with him it shares the gas field, Iran needs foreign investment. South Korea’s auto-making giants Hyundai and Kia Motors have announced their plans to export a total of 60 thousand automobiles to Iran. Hyundai Motor Company, the world’s fourth largest auto-manufacturer, is a majority-share holder in KIA motors. Iranians learned an important lesson during the sanction years, they learned they should rely more on emerging market, especially those in east Asia to protect the Iranian market against deep and sudden fluctuations during times of crisis.
