Although it is difficult to know how many people reside in the UK without authorisation, a Home Office study based on Census 2001 data released in March 2005 estimated a population of between 310,000 and 570,000
More recently, a study carried out by a research team at LSE for the Greater London Authority estimated the undocumented migrant population of the UK by updating the Home Office study. The LSE's study takes into account other factors not included in the previous estimate, namely the continued arrival of asylum seekers, the clearance of the asylum applications backlog, further undocumented migrants entering and leaving the country, more migrants overstaying, and the regularisation of EU accession citizens.
The most significant change in this estimate is however the inclusion of children born in the UK to undocumented migrants. For the LSE team undocumented migrants oscillate between 417,000 and 863,000, including a population of UK-born children ranging between 44,000 and 144,000. Drawing on this and taking stock of the outcome of the recent Case Resolution Programme, a University of Oxford's study by Nando Sigona and Vanessa Hughes estimate at end 2011 a population of undocumented migrant children of 120,000, with over half born in the UK to parents residing without legal immigration status

If you want to stay, you have to pay. Non-EU spouses of British citizens have no automatic right to live and work in the UK. Among numerous other conditions, the British spouse must earn £18,600 a year for their other half to receive a working visa. Less than half of Britain’s working population earns this much. It means thousands of loving families are forced apart every year.
Former Prime Minister David Cameron wrote in 2014 that ‘When people’s love is divided by the law, it is the law that needs to change’. But there are a set of laws in the United Kingdom that do precisely this. If you’re a Brit married to a non-EU citizen, you must earn over £18,600 a year if you want them to live with you and work in the UK.
The laws are particularly tough on women with young children, with mums often having to choose between caring for their kids and attempting to earn enough to bring their husbands to the UK. People based outside major cities also struggle to find work that pays well enough to meet the government’s threshold.
Our film follows four couples battling with the Home Office. Some have had multiple visa refusals and face the threat of imminent deportation; others are thousands of miles away from their loved ones with seemingly little hope of a permanent reunion. Can they find a way to keep their families together or will this ‘tax on love’ prove too much for them to pay?

Home Office
The Home Office (HO) is a ministerial department of the Her Majesty's Government, responsible for immigration, security, and law and order. As such it is responsible for the police, British Visas and Immigration, and the Security Service (MI5). It is also in charge of government policy on security-related issues such as drugs, counter-terrorism, and ID cards. It was formerly responsible for Her Majesty's Prison Service and Probation Service, but these have transferred to the Ministry of Justice.
It continues to be known, especially in official papers and when referred to in Parliament, as the Home Department.

If you want to stay, you have to pay. Non-EU spouses of British citizens have no automatic right to live and work in the UK. Among numerous other conditions, the British spouse must earn £18,600 a year for their other half to receive a working visa. Less than half of Britain’s working population earns this much. It means thousands of loving families are forced apart every year. Former Prime Minister David Cameron wrote in 2014 that ‘When people’s love is divided by the law, it is the law that needs to change’. More recently, a study carried out by a research team at LSE for the Greater London Authority estimated the undocumented migrant population of the UK by updating the Home Office study. The LSE's study takes into account other factors not included in the previous estimate, namely the continued arrival of asylum seekers, the clearance of the asylum applications backlog, further undocumented migrants entering and leaving the country, more migrants overstaying, and the regularisation of EU accession citizens.
The most significant change in this estimate is however the inclusion of children born in the UK to undocumented migrants. For the LSE team undocumented migrants oscillate between 417,000 and 863,000, including a population of UK-born children ranging between 44,000 and 144,000. Drawing on this and taking stock of the outcome of the recent Case Resolution Programme, a University of Oxford's study by Nando Sigona and Vanessa Hughes estimate at end 2011 a population of undocumented migrant children of 120,000, with over half born in the UK to parents residing without legal immigration status

Although it is difficult to know how many people reside in the UK without authorisation, a Home Office study based on Census 2001 data released in March 2005 estimated a population of between 310,000 and 570,000 More recently, a study carried out by a research team at LSE for the Greater London Authority estimated the undocumented migrant population of the UK by updating the Home Office study. The LSE's study takes into account other factors not included in the previous estimate, namely the continued arrival of asylum seekers, the clearance of the asylum applications backlog, further undocumented migrants entering and leaving the country, more migrants overstaying, and the regularisation of EU accession citizens. The laws are particularly tough on women with young children, with mums often having to choose between caring for their kids and attempting to earn enough to bring their husbands to the UK. People based outside major cities also struggle to find work that pays well enough to meet the government’s threshold.
Our film follows four couples battling with the Home Office. Some have had multiple visa refusals and face the threat of imminent deportation; others are thousands of miles away from their loved ones with seemingly little hope of a permanent reunion. Can they find a way to keep their families together or will this ‘tax on love’ prove too much for them to pay?

If you want to stay, you have to pay. Non-EU spouses of British citizens have no automatic right to live and work in the UK. Among numerous other conditions, the British spouse must earn £18,600 a year for their other half to receive a working visa. Less than half of Britain’s working population earns this much. It means thousands of loving families are forced apart every year.
Former Prime Minister David Cameron wrote in 2014 that ‘When people’s love is divided by the law, it is the law that needs to change’. But there are a set of laws in the United Kingdom that do precisely this. If you’re a Brit married to a non-EU citizen, you must earn over £18,600 a year if you want them to live with you and work in the UK.
The laws are particularly tough on women with young children, with mums often having to choose between caring for their kids and attempting to earn enough to bring their husbands to the UK. People based outside major cities also struggle to find work that pays well enough to meet the government’s threshold.
Our film follows four couples battling with the Home Office. Some have had multiple visa refusals and face the threat of imminent deportation; others are thousands of miles away from their loved ones with seemingly little hope of a permanent reunion. Can they find a way to keep their families together or will this ‘tax on love’ prove too much for them to pay?
