When we started talking to OFFSET about the idea of creating titles for their 2016 conference in Dublin, our heads literally exploded!
OFFSET's design and creative conference is quickly becoming globally one of the most expressive realms for pure creativity. It allows us the type of creative free-wheeling that doesn’t come along all that often in the world of commercial content production.
Working for the gapingly open creative minds of the OFFSET team, we were able to machine gun them with a range of ideas which plugged into various techniques we’ve been playing with in the studio over the past few years.
Together we latched onto a direction which intuitively seemed to express the intangible impression of an OFFSET weekend. We were also driven by the challenges of the technology we were proposing, but the fit with the vibrancy and freshness of the OFFSET brand seemed natural.
Loosely based on our past experiences of seeing, hearing and intellectually digesting the diversity of inspiring material we’ve always enjoyed at OFFSET, our ambition was to compress the main title sequence into an intensified nugget of this experience. It’s one speaker after another who’s unique take on creativity and design gives you much needed perspective on your own place in the creative universe. The whirlwind of fresh ideas and stimulating originality is like being slapped around by a motivation-glove wielding Conor McGregor.
Distilling that into a minute was our challenge. We’ve also had a long and somewhat obsessive relationship with motion capture and particularly facial performance capture. Gavin Kelly’s short film Doom Newt (watch this space…) being the latest in a string of projects underpinned by performance capture.
Using the facial capture and rigging pipeline we’d developed for the short, we started to explore the idea of applying the speech, twitches, blinks and idiosyncrasies of the human face, to abstract visual explorations, roughly inspired by talking human heads.
The impression of watching one inspiring speaker after another at OFFSET we’ve expressed as rhythmic channel-hopping between dynamic soundbites. As the sound was such a critical part of this idea, we collaborated closely with Mutiny Recording Studios here in Dublin, who created a spectacular piece of sound design. We then directed a motion capture shoot remotely through our friends at Audio Motion, to generate the facial performance data.
Our studio of 3D artists developed the wide range of colourful digital sculptures, expressing their own unique interpretation of each audio snippet or monologue. When the facial capture data started to drive the movement of the virtual sculptures, our family of slightly bizarre OFFSET heads came to life.
The resulting piece encapsulates the freedom of creative expression that OFFSET is all about and we’re chuffed to now be part of the OFFSET’s inspiring history.

During the 1970's, Northern Ireland was seen as a musical wasteland. Bands struggled to get recognition and found it difficult to be heard because of geography and politics. There were few outlets for people to go to hear new music and socialise in a worry free environment. Terri Hooley changed all that.
In the late 1970's Terri opened up the record shop "Good Vibrations" on the most bombed street in Europe at the time. The record shop was a major focal point for the local music scene. Inspired by the people he met through the shop and the talent he saw in Belfast, he set up a label of the same name. The label went on to release music from numerous bands from the Belfast punk and ska scene.
A self confessed, "terrible businessman" Terri oversaw the shop open and close 11 times and the label never really generated much income. Despite all that, Terri kept going.
A colossus of the music scene in Northern Ireland, Terri Hooley is a living legend. Without Terri, many punk bands would have remained unheard of during the Troubles. Terri's bravery and dogged determination ensured that this would not be the case. He sparked a punk revolution that put Belfast back on the musical map.
We spent a weekend with Terri in his beloved city of Belfast. He showed us around some of his old haunts and shed new insights on his life in music. For a 65 year old man, Terri still has the energy and enthusiasm of a young punk.

Dublin Fire Brigade
The Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB; Irish: Briogáid Dóiteáin Átha Cliath) is the local authority fire and rescue service for Dublin City and the majority of the Greater Dublin Area. It is a branch of Dublin City Council. There are currently 14 fire stations manned by DFB, 12 of which are full-time, the other 2 are part-time or "retained". Full-time stations are manned by shifts across 4 watches, A, B, C & D. There are currently over 900 active personnel making it the largest fire service based on manpower and resources in Ireland.
History
Dublin City's first municipal fire engines were delivered in 1705. Throughout the second half of the 18th Century, insurance brigades were the primary source of firefighting for the city, operating independently for buildings bearing the mark of their respective insurance companies. Eventually the brigades began to co-operate on a competition basis with the first brigade on scene being the highest paid. It wasn't until 1862 with the enactment of the Dublin Corporation Act, that the city had an organised fire brigade. Dublin man J.R. Ingram became the first superintendent of the brigade, having worked as a fireman in New York and London. The brigade consisted of 24 men with a makeshift fire brigade station on Winetavern Street in The Liberties. In 1898 the Dublin Fire Brigade Ambulance Service was established. The turn of the century saw the brigade have its first fire stations and permanent headquarters built, with the first motorised fire engine coming on stream in 1909.

Fire department

Terri Hooley
Terri Hooley (born 23 December 1948) is a prominent figure in the Belfast punk scene and founder of the Good Vibrations record shop and label, responsible for bands such as The Undertones, Rudi, Protex and The Outcasts making their mark on the national music scene in Ireland and Britain. After playing "Teenage Kicks" on BBC national radio John Peel then became a big supporter of the Good Vibrations record label.
Despite growing popularity, though, Good Vibrations filed for bankruptcy in 1982, just as the first wave of British punk had died. Bands that had gone to London, such as Protex and Rudi, went back to Hooley – and Belfast. Hooley's friends later got him a shop called Vintage Records, Co. just around the corner from Good Vibrations.
The label celebrated its 30th anniversary in April 2008.
In October 2010 his book Hooleygan was published by Blackstaff Press and was number four in the local charts at Christmas. A "Terri Hooley For Mayor Of Belfast" Facebook campaign was set up but he declined the offer saying: "There are enough fools in Belfast City Hall, they don't need another one."

2014 Trek Gravity Enduro Ireland Round 2 - Ticknock, County Dublin
I love the when the Enduro series rolls round to Ticknock. Maybe it's because the hill is literally on my doorstep and I don't have to do anything other than jump on the bike and ride up there, maybe it's the awesome views over Dublin city from the north face or the epic scenery of the Wicklow mountains to the south. Maybe it's the promise of a well-earned cold pint and recounting a few tall tales in the Blue Light after a hard days riding. Maybe it's the epic trails, carved into the hillside entreating 365 athletes to test their mortal selves and their bikes to see who will prove victorious on Sunday afternoon. Into The Night - Dublin City : Digital Bolex
Testing, testing... Took the digital bolex for a walk in Dublin, into the night. All hand held shots, 16mm Kern Switar, 2k mode, Tungsten w/b, 200 iso. The d16 is not a low light camera, judge for yourself how it performed. The workflow for this was not an optimal one - transcoded as Tiff's & MP4's. Much better results can be obtained by using LightPost & transcoding to ProRes files. Some flicker can be seen, this was testing various shutter angles. Some vertical smear can also be seen on car headlights, lens was wide open & the lighting conditions were a bit extreme, no one likes CCD smear, but in this case it didn't really detract from the shots. When we started talking to OFFSET about the idea of creating titles for their 2016 conference in Dublin, our heads literally exploded!
OFFSET's design and creative conference is quickly becoming globally one of the most expressive realms for pure creativity. It allows us the type of creative free-wheeling that doesn’t come along all that often in the world of commercial content production.
Working for the gapingly open creative minds of the OFFSET team, we were able to machine gun them with a range of ideas which plugged into various techniques we’ve been playing with in the studio over the past few years.
Together we latched onto a direction which intuitively seemed to express the intangible impression of an OFFSET weekend. We were also driven by the challenges of the technology we were proposing, but the fit with the vibrancy and freshness of the OFFSET brand seemed natural.
Loosely based on our past experiences of seeing, hearing and intellectually digesting the diversity of inspiring material we’ve always enjoyed at OFFSET, our ambition was to compress the main title sequence into an intensified nugget of this experience. It’s one speaker after another who’s unique take on creativity and design gives you much needed perspective on your own place in the creative universe. The whirlwind of fresh ideas and stimulating originality is like being slapped around by a motivation-glove wielding Conor McGregor.
Distilling that into a minute was our challenge. We’ve also had a long and somewhat obsessive relationship with motion capture and particularly facial performance capture. Gavin Kelly’s short film Doom Newt (watch this space…) being the latest in a string of projects underpinned by performance capture.
Using the facial capture and rigging pipeline we’d developed for the short, we started to explore the idea of applying the speech, twitches, blinks and idiosyncrasies of the human face, to abstract visual explorations, roughly inspired by talking human heads.
The impression of watching one inspiring speaker after another at OFFSET we’ve expressed as rhythmic channel-hopping between dynamic soundbites. As the sound was such a critical part of this idea, we collaborated closely with Mutiny Recording Studios here in Dublin, who created a spectacular piece of sound design. We then directed a motion capture shoot remotely through our friends at Audio Motion, to generate the facial performance data.
Our studio of 3D artists developed the wide range of colourful digital sculptures, expressing their own unique interpretation of each audio snippet or monologue. When the facial capture data started to drive the movement of the virtual sculptures, our family of slightly bizarre OFFSET heads came to life.
The resulting piece encapsulates the freedom of creative expression that OFFSET is all about and we’re chuffed to now be part of the OFFSET’s inspiring history.

During the 1970's, Northern Ireland was seen as a musical wasteland. Bands struggled to get recognition and found it difficult to be heard because of geography and politics. There were few outlets for people to go to hear new music and socialise in a worry free environment. Terri Hooley changed all that.
In the late 1970's Terri opened up the record shop "Good Vibrations" on the most bombed street in Europe at the time. The record shop was a major focal point for the local music scene. Inspired by the people he met through the shop and the talent he saw in Belfast, he set up a label of the same name. The label went on to release music from numerous bands from the Belfast punk and ska scene.
A self confessed, "terrible businessman" Terri oversaw the shop open and close 11 times and the label never really generated much income. Despite all that, Terri kept going.
A colossus of the music scene in Northern Ireland, Terri Hooley is a living legend. Without Terri, many punk bands would have remained unheard of during the Troubles. Terri's bravery and dogged determination ensured that this would not be the case. He sparked a punk revolution that put Belfast back on the musical map.
We spent a weekend with Terri in his beloved city of Belfast. He showed us around some of his old haunts and shed new insights on his life in music. For a 65 year old man, Terri still has the energy and enthusiasm of a young punk.

I love the when the Enduro series rolls round to Ticknock.
Maybe it's because the hill is literally on my doorstep and I don't have to
do anything other than jump on the bike and ride up there, maybe it's the
awesome views over Dublin city from the north face or the epic scenery of
the Wicklow mountains to the south.
Maybe it's the promise of a well-earned cold pint and recounting a few tall
tales in the Blue Light after a hard days riding. Maybe it's the epic
trails, carved into the hillside entreating 365 athletes to test their
mortal selves and their bikes to see who will prove victorious on Sunday
afternoon.
Truth be told, it's probably all of these things combined, helped along in
no little part by the organisational nous that series boss Niall Davis and
his Biking.ie team bring to the party.
After a sell-out season opener in Ballinastoe, Ticknock was proving to be
yet another hot ticket with the increased allocation of entries, up from 350
for R1, sold out with over a month to go. As always there was good
representation across all the age categories with particularly strong
Women's and Junior fields entered. Good representation also from the club
scene, with a strong showing from all the local clubs and teams who would be
regular visitors to Ticknock's slopes.
That notwithstanding there was a healthy entry from across all the provinces
and even a few international entries with Katie Winton, Fiona Beattie and
Joe Barnes travelling from bonny Scotland to compete.
Also fresh from their respective World and European Enduro endeavours were a
couple of home-grown international contenders in the Pro category - Greg
Callaghan & Dan Wolfe here hoping to stamp their authority on that class on
local turf.
Given the wealth of local knowledge then, and to keep with the spirit of the
blind racing format, this year's stages were quite different from what
competitors had experienced for the last two runnings of this event and the
exact stages were not made known until the tape went up on the Friday
afternoon.
Although the overall distance was relatively short due to the compact nature
of the site, there was plenty of climbing to keep the legs busy with the 5
transitions requiring the competitors to traverse almost 1000 vertical
metres.
It would be fair to assume then that the descents were going to be steep
also - they were! The stages had a little of everything thrown in to the mix
- Fast flowing manmade single track; choppy, rocky rain gullies; open,
grassy hillside; loamy forest floor with ninja roots and wall jumps galore.
A test for both man and machine designed to not favour any specialist rider
or setup (apart from the skilled, fearless & most committed of course!)
The weather on race day, while not quite the glorious sunshine that had
favoured the Saturday practise, held fair for the event with the rain that
had been threatening all day only arriving as the podium celebrations got
under way.
As expected the main contenders for the overall race were going to be the
international trio of Dan Wolfe, Greg Callaghan & Joe Barnes and this is in
fact how they finished with Wolfe acing two of the three stages to claim the
win by 4.4 seconds from Callaghan with Barnes a further 6.6 in arrears.
In the age categories Conor Lavelle of Biking.ie took the honours yet again
in the 14-18 group, 1:07 adrift of the winning time which saw him 5th
overall. Michael Lee of Hollingsworth Cycles claimed top spot in the 19-29
category. Alan Mellon won the 30-34 prize, while the Cycle Inn's Ian Coates
stood on the top step once more in the 35-39 group. Bike Addiction's Joules
Dormer took the top step once more in the 40-49 age group while Team
Ballyhoura's Joe Bergin took top honours in the 50+ category.
The women's category saw some tight racing also with Pivot Morvelo Enduro
Racing's Katy Winton taking the top step ahead of MBW Kona Ireland Racing's
Leah Maunsell by a margin of 40 seconds with Epic MTB's Orla McLean a
further 29 seconds adrift.

With the podium celebrations complete there was little else to do but retire
to the Blue Light for a pint and a tasty burger from the barbecue, listen to
some music, tell some war stories and to look forward to the next event in
Limerick in a little under two months' time.

regular visitors to Ticknock's slopes.
That notwithstanding there was a healthy entry from across all the provinces
and even a few international entries with Katie Winton, Fiona Beattie and
Joe Barnes travelling from bonny Scotland to compete.
Also fresh from their respective World and European Enduro endeavours were a
couple of home-grown international contenders in the Pro category - Greg
Callaghan & Dan Wolfe here hoping to stamp their authority on that class on
local turf.
Given the wealth of local knowledge then, and to keep with the spirit of the
blind racing format, this year's stages were quite different from what
competitors had experienced for the last two runnings of this event and the
exact stages were not made known until the tape went up on the Friday
afternoon.
Although the overall distance was relatively short due to the compact nature
of the site, there was plenty of climbing to keep the legs busy with the 5
transitions requiring the competitors to traverse almost 1000 vertical
metres.
It would be fair to assume then that the descents were going to be steep
also - they were! The stages had a little of everything thrown in to the mix
- Fast flowing manmade single track; choppy, rocky rain gullies; open,
grassy hillside; loamy forest floor with ninja roots and wall jumps galore.
A test for both man and machine designed to not favour any specialist rider
or setup (apart from the skilled, fearless & most committed of course!)
The weather on race day, while not quite the glorious sunshine that had
favoured the Saturday practise, held fair for the event with the rain that
had been threatening all day only arriving as the podium celebrations got
under way.
As expected the main contenders for the overall race were going to be the
international trio of Dan Wolfe, Greg Callaghan & Joe Barnes and this is in
fact how they finished with Wolfe acing two of the three stages to claim the
win by 4.4 seconds from Callaghan with Barnes a further 6.6 in arrears.
In the age categories Conor Lavelle of Biking.ie took the honours yet again
in the 14-18 group, 1:07 adrift of the winning time which saw him 5th
overall. Michael Lee of Hollingsworth Cycles claimed top spot in the 19-29
category. Alan Mellon won the 30-34 prize, while the Cycle Inn's Ian Coates
stood on the top step once more in the 35-39 group. Bike Addiction's Joules
Dormer took the top step once more in the 40-49 age group while Team
Ballyhoura's Joe Bergin took top honours in the 50+ category.
The women's category saw some tight racing also with Pivot Morvelo Enduro
Racing's Katy Winton taking the top step ahead of MBW Kona Ireland Racing's
Leah Maunsell by a margin of 40 seconds with Epic MTB's Orla McLean a
further 29 seconds adrift.

With the podium celebrations complete there was little else to do but retire
to the Blue Light for a pint and a tasty burger from the barbecue, listen to
some music, tell some war stories and to look forward to the next event in
Limerick in a little under two months' time.

Testing, testing... Took the digital bolex for a walk in Dublin, into the night. All hand held shots, 16mm Kern Switar, 2k mode, Tungsten w/b, 200 iso. The d16 is not a low light camera, judge for yourself how it performed. The workflow for this was not an optimal one - transcoded as Tiff's & MP4's. Much better results can be obtained by using LightPost & transcoding to ProRes files.
Some flicker can be seen, this was testing various shutter angles. Some vertical smear can also be seen on car headlights, lens was wide open & the lighting conditions were a bit extreme, no one likes CCD smear, but in this case it didn't really detract from the shots. The only grading done was tweaking the w/b, no sharpening or exposure comp. Blue tint in some shots was an asthetic choice. Trinity College was founded in 1592 and it is the oldest university in Ireland. The campus is open to visitors interested in touring the grounds, and you'll also get to hear some fascinating stories of famous students, including the likes of Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, and Bram Stoker.
The Guinness Storehouse is Dublin's most popular attraction, and it's a must-visit for beer lovers. The Storehouse covers seven floors surrounding a glass atrium shaped like a pint of Guinness. Inside you'll also find a copy of the 9,000 year lease signed by Arthur Guinness on the brewery site - they won't be going anywhere for a while!
Grafton Street is one of the main shopping areas in Dublin. You're likely to find lots of musicians, buskers, and performers along here, plus you get a good vantage point of The Spire.
Prior to the establishment of Glasnevin Cemetery, Irish Catholics had no place of their own to bury their dead. This burial ground gave both Irish Catholics and Protestants a place where they could give their dead dignified burial, and it has since become the resting place for people of all religions and non religions.
Experience Gaelic Games is a place where you can come and try traditional Irish sports like hurling and Gaelic football.
The Old Jameson Distillery is the original site where Jameson Irish Whiskey was distilled until 1971. It is now a visitor centre that offers both guided tours and whiskey tastings.
Temple Bar is an area known for its lively nightlife. Located on the southbank of the River Liffey, you'll find all sorts of pubs playing live music once the sun goes down. There's also one pub in Temple Bar, called The Temple Bar, but don't let that confuse you.

Trinity College was founded in 1592 and it is the oldest university in Ireland. The campus is open to visitors interested in touring the grounds, and you'll also get to hear some fascinating stories of famous students, including the likes of Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, and Bram Stoker.
The Guinness Storehouse is Dublin's most popular attraction, and it's a must-visit for beer lovers. The Storehouse covers seven floors surrounding a glass atrium shaped like a pint of Guinness. Inside you'll also find a copy of the 9,000 year lease signed by Arthur Guinness on the brewery site - they won't be going anywhere for a while!
Grafton Street is one of the main shopping areas in Dublin. You're likely to find lots of musicians, buskers, and performers along here, plus you get a good vantage point of The Spire.
Prior to the establishment of Glasnevin Cemetery, Irish Catholics had no place of their own to bury their dead. This burial ground gave both Irish Catholics and Protestants a place where they could give their dead dignified burial, and it has since become the resting place for people of all religions and non religions.
Experience Gaelic Games is a place where you can come and try traditional Irish sports like hurling and Gaelic football.
The Old Jameson Distillery is the original site where Jameson Irish Whiskey was distilled until 1971. It is now a visitor centre that offers both guided tours and whiskey tastings.
Temple Bar is an area known for its lively nightlife. Located on the southbank of the River Liffey, you'll find all sorts of pubs playing live music once the sun goes down. There's also one pub in Temple Bar, called The Temple Bar, but don't let that confuse you.

The airport is 10km outside Dublin and is the only international airport serving the city. From here, your choices for transport to the centre are bus or a taxi, as there’s no train station at the airport.
Dublin airport’s Aircoach will take you to various locations across the city, so make sure you know which stop is nearest your hotel.
Dublin is compact, which means if you’re staying in the city centre, you can pretty much walk to everything. However, if you want to get around quickly, hop on a tram. The Luas is Dublin’s tram system; there are two lines, red and green. And the walk from the end of the green line to the red line is about 15 minutes. Don’t forget to always tap in and tap out, otherwise you’ll get charged the maximum possible fare.
If you plan on making multiple journeys, we recommend getting a Leap Card. It’s Dublin’s public transport top-up smart card and you can get them at the airport or at local shops, wherever you see the sign.
Dublin is bisected by the River LIffey, which runs across the city. There used to be a pronounced cultural divide, with the poor living in the North and the South being home to the upper and middle classes. Today, that’s not the case and Dublin can be divided into some distinct districts…
The Medieval district is the oldest part of Dublin. It’s here that you can find Dublin Castle, Christ Church and St.Patrick’s Cathedral.
The Georgian District starts at St.Stephen’s Green and Trinity College and continues up to the canal. Dublin’s Docklands is where lots of the world’s biggest tech companies have offices. The Cultural District is where you’ll find Temple Bar. This area is home to pubs, clubs, markets and Dublin’s most energetic nightlife.
A word of warning about the weather in Dublin - it’s late June and, as you can see, the weather is glorious… If you’re a duck! But, seriously, the weather in Dublin constantly changes. During the time in the city, we’d often have warm sun, torrential rain and overcast skies; all on the same day. Our advice is to be prepared and pack a light waterproof or small umbrella.
If there’s one thing that Dublin and Ireland do better than anyone else in the world, it’s their seafood, especially their oysters.
One place we definitely recommend you go is Klaw. It’s a tiny seafood restaurant on Crown Alley, just off Temple Bar Square. It’ll probably be full when you arrive so you may have to wait outside with a pint of Guinness but it’s worth it, we promise.
Also, if you quote ‘Holiday Extras’ when you arrive, they’ll give you a free Oyster :)
When it comes to drink, Guinness is obviously what Dublin is best known for, and for good reason. Ireland’s most famous export definitely tastes better in its home city. They say it’s in the water, but what we know is that you can’t come to Dublin without at least trying it just once…or twice…three times…you get the idea!
We recommend trying out the Porterhouse. It’s the city’s original craft beer pub and they’ve been serving for 20 years. I’ve gone for a Dublin pale ale, which is €5 and, according to this, is an Irish-style pale ale with an orange, lemon and lime hop character…
This Guinness in Temple Bar was €5.95.
This pub meal cost €13.50.
This coffee cost €2.50.
A Temple Bar hotel cost roughly €170 per night.
Quick tip - if at the chip and PIN machine you get the choice to use Pounds or Euros, always choose Euros. Shops will give you a worse exchange rate than your bank will.

During the 1970's, Northern Ireland was seen as a musical wasteland. Bands struggled to get recognition and found it difficult to be heard because of geography and politics. There were few outlets for people to go to hear new music and socialise in a worry free environment. Terri Hooley changed all that. In the late 1970's Terri opened up the record shop "Good Vibrations" on the most bombed street in Europe at the time. The record shop was a major focal point for the local music scene. Inspired by the people he met through the shop and the talent he saw in Belfast, he set up a label of the same name. 2014 Trek Gravity Enduro Ireland Round 2 - Ticknock, County Dublin
I love the when the Enduro series rolls round to Ticknock. Maybe it's because the hill is literally on my doorstep and I don't have to do anything other than jump on the bike and ride up there, maybe it's the awesome views over Dublin city from the north face or the epic scenery of the Wicklow mountains to the south. Maybe it's the promise of a well-earned cold pint and recounting a few tall tales in the Blue Light after a hard days riding. Maybe it's the epic trails, carved into the hillside entreating 365 athletes to test their mortal selves and their bikes to see who will prove victorious on Sunday afternoon. Into The Night - Dublin City : Digital Bolex
Testing, testing... Took the digital bolex for a walk in Dublin, into the night. All hand held shots, 16mm Kern Switar, 2k mode, Tungsten w/b, 200 iso. The d16 is not a low light camera, judge for yourself how it performed. The workflow for this was not an optimal one - transcoded as Tiff's & MP4's. Much better results can be obtained by using LightPost & transcoding to ProRes files. Some flicker can be seen, this was testing various shutter angles. Some vertical smear can also be seen on car headlights, lens was wide open & the lighting conditions were a bit extreme, no one likes CCD smear, but in this case it didn't really detract from the shots. The only grading done was tweaking the w/b, no sharpening or exposure comp. Blue tint in some shots was an asthetic choice. Some DNG files ca...

Working for the gapingly open creative minds of the OFFSET team, we were able to machine gun them with a range of ideas which plugged into various techniques we’ve been playing with in the studio over the past few years.
Together we latched onto a direction which intuitively seemed to express the intangible impression of an OFFSET weekend. We were also driven by the challenges of the technology we were proposing, but the fit with the vibrancy and freshness of the OFFSET brand seemed natural.
Loosely based on our past experiences of seeing, hearing and intellectually digesting the diversity of inspiring material we’ve always enjoyed at OFFSET, our ambition was to compress the main title sequence into an intensified nugget of this experience. It’s one speaker after another who’s unique take on creativity and design gives you much needed perspective on your own place in the creative universe. The whirlwind of fresh ideas and stimulating originality is like being slapped around by a motivation-glove wielding Conor McGregor.
Distilling that into a minute was our challenge. We’ve also had a long and somewhat obsessive relationship with motion capture and particularly facial performance capture. Gavin Kelly’s short film Doom Newt (watch this space…) being the latest in a string of projects underpinned by performance capture.
Using the facial capture and rigging pipeline we’d developed for the short, we started to explore the idea of applying the speech, twitches, blinks and idiosyncrasies of the human face, to abstract visual explorations, roughly inspired by talking human heads.
The impression of watching one inspiring speaker after another at OFFSET we’ve expressed as rhythmic channel-hopping between dynamic soundbites. As the sound was such a critical part of this idea, we collaborated closely with Mutiny Recording Studios here in Dublin, who created a spectacular piece of sound design. We then directed a motion capture shoot remotely through our friends at Audio Motion, to generate the facial performance data.
Our studio of 3D artists developed the wide range of colourful digital sculptures, expressing their own unique interpretation of each audio snippet or monologue. When the facial capture data started to drive the movement of the virtual sculptures, our family of slightly bizarre OFFSET heads came to life.
The resulting piece encapsulates the freedom of creative expression that OFFSET is all about and we’re chuffed to now be part of the OFFSET’s inspiring history.

A colossus of the music scene in Northern Ireland, Terri Hooley is a living legend. Without Terri, many punk bands would have remained unheard of during the Troubles. Terri's bravery and dogged determination ensured that this would not be the case. He sparked a punk revolution that put Belfast back on the musical map.
We spent a weekend with Terri in his beloved city of Belfast. He showed us around some of his old haunts and shed new insights on his life in music. For a 65 year old man, Terri still has the energy and enthusiasm of a young punk.

During the 1970's, Northern Ireland was seen as a musical wasteland. Bands struggled to get recognition and found it difficult to be heard because of geography and politics. There were few outlets for people to go to hear new music and socialise in a worry free environment. Terri Hooley changed all that.
In the late 1970's Terri opened up the record shop "Good Vibrations" on the most bombed street in Europe at the time. The record shop was a major focal point for the local music scene. Inspired by the people he met through the shop and the talent he saw in Belfast, he set up a label of the same name. The label went on to release music from numerous bands from the Belfast punk and ska scene.
A self confessed, "terrible businessman" Terri oversaw the shop open and close 11 times and the label never really generated much income. Despite all that, Terri kept going.
A colossus of the music scene in Northern Ireland, Terri Hooley is a living legend. Without Terri, many punk bands would have remained unheard of during the Troubles. Terri's bravery and dogged determination ensured that this would not be the case. He sparked a punk revolution that put Belfast back on the musical map.
We spent a weekend with Terri in his beloved city of Belfast. He showed us around some of his old haunts and shed new insights on his life in music. For a 65 year old man, Terri still has the energy and enthusiasm of a young punk.

I love the when the Enduro series rolls round to Ticknock.
Maybe it's because the hill is literally on my doorstep and I don't have to
do anything other than jump on the bike and ride up there, maybe it's the
awesome views over Dublin city from the north face or the epic scenery of
the Wicklow mountains to the south.
Maybe it's the promise of a well-earned cold pint and recounting a few tall
tales in the Blue Light after a hard days riding. Maybe it's the epic
trails, carved into the hillside entreating 365 athletes to test their
mortal selves and their bikes to see who will prove victorious on Sunday
afternoon.
Truth be told, it's probably all of these things combined, helped along in
no little part by the organisational nous that series boss Niall Davis and
his Biking.ie team bring to the party.
After a sell-out season opener in Ballinastoe, Ticknock was proving to be
yet another hot ticket with the increased allocation of entries, up from 350
for R1, sold out with over a month to go. As always there was good
representation across all the age categories with particularly strong
Women's and Junior fields entered. Good representation also from the club
scene, with a strong showing from all the local clubs and teams who would be
regular visitors to Ticknock's slopes.
That notwithstanding there was a healthy entry from across all the provinces
and even a few international entries with Katie Winton, Fiona Beattie and
Joe Barnes travelling from bonny Scotland to compete.
Also fresh from their respective World and European Enduro endeavours were a
couple of home-grown international contenders in the Pro category - Greg
Callaghan & Dan Wolfe here hoping to stamp their authority on that class on
local turf.
Given the wealth of local knowledge then, and to keep with the spirit of the
blind racing format, this year's stages were quite different from what
competitors had experienced for the last two runnings of this event and the
exact stages were not made known until the tape went up on the Friday
afternoon.
Although the overall distance was relatively short due to the compact nature
of the site, there was plenty of climbing to keep the legs busy with the 5
transitions requiring the competitors to traverse almost 1000 vertical
metres.
It would be fair to assume then that the descents were going to be steep
also - they were! The stages had a little of everything thrown in to the mix
- Fast flowing manmade single track; choppy, rocky rain gullies; open,
grassy hillside; loamy forest floor with ninja roots and wall jumps galore.
A test for both man and machine designed to not favour any specialist rider
or setup (apart from the skilled, fearless & most committed of course!)
The weather on race day, while not quite the glorious sunshine that had
favoured the Saturday practise, held fair for the event with the rain that
had been threatening all day only arriving as the podium celebrations got
under way.
As expected the main contenders for the overall race were going to be the
international trio of Dan Wolfe, Greg Callaghan & Joe Barnes and this is in
fact how they finished with Wolfe acing two of the three stages to claim the
win by 4.4 seconds from Callaghan with Barnes a further 6.6 in arrears.
In the age categories Conor Lavelle of Biking.ie took the honours yet again
in the 14-18 group, 1:07 adrift of the winning time which saw him 5th
overall. Michael Lee of Hollingsworth Cycles claimed top spot in the 19-29
category. Alan Mellon won the 30-34 prize, while the Cycle Inn's Ian Coates
stood on the top step once more in the 35-39 group. Bike Addiction's Joules
Dormer took the top step once more in the 40-49 age group while Team
Ballyhoura's Joe Bergin took top honours in the 50+ category.
The women's category saw some tight racing also with Pivot Morvelo Enduro
Racing's Katy Winton taking the top step ahead of MBW Kona Ireland Racing's
Leah Maunsell by a margin of 40 seconds with Epic MTB's Orla McLean a
further 29 seconds adrift.

With the podium celebrations complete there was little else to do but retire
to the Blue Light for a pint and a tasty burger from the barbecue, listen to
some music, tell some war stories and to look forward to the next event in
Limerick in a little under two months' time.

Testing, testing... Took the digital bolex for a walk in Dublin, into the night. All hand held shots, 16mm Kern Switar, 2k mode, Tungsten w/b, 200 iso. The d16 ...
Testing, testing... Took the digital bolex for a walk in Dublin, into the night. All hand held shots, 16mm Kern Switar, 2k mode, Tungsten w/b, 200 iso. The d16 is not a low light camera, judge for yourself how it performed. The workflow for this was not an optimal one - transcoded as Tiff's & MP4's. Much better results can be obtained by using LightPost & transcoding to ProRes files.
Some flicker can be seen, this was testing various shutter angles. Some vertical smear can also be seen on car headlights, lens was wide open & the lighting conditions were a bit extreme, no one likes CCD smear, but in this case it didn't really detract from the shots. The only grading done was tweaking the w/b, no sharpening or exposure comp. Blue tint in some shots was an asthetic choice.
