박근혜 첫 정식재판…최순실과 나란히 피고인석에 앉다
Former president Park Geun-hye,... who made history as the first democratically-elected South Korean leader to be impeached,... had her first day in court on Tuesday.
It was the first time the country had seen her since she was locked up in March.
The former president faces numerous charges including abuse of power and bribery.

Korea's first-ever impeached president Park Geun-hye attended her first trial hearing in Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday.
She arrived at the court thirty minutes before her trial, which was scheduled for 10 in the morning,... with her hands cuffed and inmate number 503 attached to her clothing.
This is her first public appearance in the 53 days since her detention,... as it was not mandatory for her to attend the two preliminary hearings.
The ousted president faces 18 charges, including receiving or demanding around 53 million U.S. dollars in bribes from conglomerates, including Samsung and Lotte.
When being seated in the courtroom, Park looked straight ahead,... not even taking the slightest glance at her longtime confidante Choi Soon-sil when Choi entered the room.
The two were in court together for the first time, along with Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin.
Choi is charged with receiving bribes, while the Lotte chief Shin is accused of handing out bribes.
This awkward encounter between the defendants occurred as the pair had overlapping charges, leading to the court deciding to merge Park and Choi's case during Tuesday's trial.

We start with news that former president Park Geun-hye has been arrested.
The Seoul Central District Court announced its ruling at slightly after THREE AM, Korea time.... some four hours ago.
She's been detained on a slew of charges including bribery, abuse of power, coercion and leaking government secrets.
Park becomes the third former South Korean president to be arrested... and if found guilty, she could find herself serving many, many years behind bars.
Let's start at Seoul Detention Center, located in Uiwang , Gyeonggi-do Province,... Park's new home for the foreseeable future.
Our Shin Se-min is there for us.
Semin,... what's the atmosphere like there now? Are we seeing any massive protests from Park's supporters like the ones we've seen around her private residence recently?
The current mood here is rather calm, especially compared to a couple of hours ago when the convoy of vehicles carrying the disgraced former president arrived at the detention center at 4:45 AM.
When she arrived,... Park was driven past a large group of die-hard pro-Park supporters asserting her innocence,... as well as those in support of the court's decision.
The level of security has been reduced somewhat since her arrival and we're seeing less activity outside the facility.
Like you said,... this place is going to be the former president's new reality for up to 20-days.
After that time she will be presented with formal charges of bribery, abuse of power, coercion and leaking government secrets that could see her jailed for at least 10 years... perhaps longer.
Remarkable scenes as the former president was driven inside,... looking visibly tired and anxious. Semin,,, tell us more about what Park will go through at Seoul Detention Center. Will she receive any special treatment as the former leader?
No.
It's fair to say that Park's life of comfort is over now.
As with all suspects brought here,... Park has... or will soon go through a physical checkup,... described as an embarrassing process,... as the guards have to make sure the suspects don't have anything they shouldn't.
She will then be required to change into a yellow and green color prison uniform before being transferred to her solitary cell
Size-wise it will be equal to that of the prison cells assigned to past former presidents who had also served some jail time, which is larger than six-and-a-half square meters.
Just like anyone else entering, she will be stripped off of all her personal belongings and will only be given simple toiletries, a blanket and tableware for her meals.
Here at the facility center, Park will lead her life based on rules and guidelines,... such as getting up at 6-30am and lights out at 9-PM.
She will only be allowed a limited number of visitors a day but she will be allowed unlimited access to her lawyers.
And these rules are also being followed by a number of other once-powerful figures who got mixed up in this scandal.
They are Samsung's de facto boss Lee Jae-yong, the woman at the heart of the scandal Choi Soon-sil,her niece Jang Si-ho, Choi's close associate Cha Eun-taek, the ex-presidential chief of staff Kim Ki-choon and the former culture minister Cho Yoon-sun are all jailed here at the facility.
The Korea Correctional site says they are not allowed any contact with each other.

Now let’s hear more on how the court proceedings went this morning from our Hwang Ho-jun, who is there for us.

Daeun, as you said, the Constitutional Court has upheld the motion to impeach President Park Geun-hye... in a unanimous decision by the court's eight justices.
Now, Korea will be required to hold a presidential election within the next 60 days.
The ruling, which was announced by the court's interim Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi at 11 a.m., was televised live, drawing the attention of Koreans and people around the world.
Chief Justice Lee began by refuting the accusation that the trial wasn't fair, citing precedent and saying that legally there was nothing wrong with the way the impeachment motion had been passed by parliament.
Then, she went on to lay out each of the charges against Park Geun-hye.
The justice said it was unconstitutional for Park to have let her confidante, Choi Soon-sil, a civilian with no official government position, meddle in state affairs,... and that Park abused her power to collude with Choi to extort money from conglomerates.
The court dismissed the accusation that Park abused her power in appointing government officials, citing a lack of evidence.
It also dismissed the charge that Park neglected her duty during the Sewol-ho ferry sinking in 2014... saying it did not warrant deliberation by the court.
And in delivering the final verdict, this is what Chief Justice Lee said:
"The negative effects of the president's actions and their repercussions are grave, and the benefits to defending the Constitution by removing her from office are overwhelmingly large."
The court's decision strips Park Geun-hye of her immunity from criminal prosecution, which will force her to undergo interrogation by prosecutors over her alleged crimes.

Well I guess the big question now is how soon the prosecutors will summon her for questioning and to what kind of punishment she will face if proven guilty of the multiple charges she's accused of. It must've been a very busy day for you too, thank you Ho-jun.

Park Geun-hye (박근혜, Korean pronunciation: [pak.k͈ɯnh(j)e]; born 2 February 1952) is the eleventh and current President of South Korea. She is the first woman to be elected as President in South Korea and is serving the 18th presidential term. She also is the first female head of state in the history of Korea and first female president of an East Asian nation, and is the first South Korean president to have been born a South Korean citizen. Prior to her presidency, she was the chairwoman of the conservative Grand National Party (GNP) between 2004 and 2006 and between 2011 and 2012 (the GNP changed its name to the "Saenuri Party" in February 2012). Park was also a member of the Korean National Assembly and served four complete consecutive parliamentary terms as a constituency representative between 1998 and 2012; she started her fifth term as a proportional representative in June 2012. Ho-jun Daeun, as you said, the Constitutional Court has upheld the motion to impeach President Park Geun-hye... in a unanimous decision by the court's eight justices. Now, Korea will be required to hold a presidential election within the next 60 days. The ruling, which was announced by the court's interim Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi at 11 a.m., was televised live, drawing the attention of Koreans and people around the world. Chief Justice Lee began by refuting the accusation that the trial wasn't fair, citing precedent and saying that legally there was nothing wrong with the way the impeachment motion had been passed by parliament. Then, she went on to lay out each of the charges against Park Geun-hye. The justice said it was unconstitutional for Park to have let her confidante, Choi Soon-sil, a civilian with no official government position, meddle in state affairs,... and that Park abused her power to collude with Choi to extort money from conglomerates. The court dismissed the accusation that Park abused her power in appointing government officials, citing a lack of evidence. It also dismissed the charge that Park neglected her duty during the Sewol-ho ferry sinking in 2014... saying it did not warrant deliberation by the court. And in delivering the final verdict, this is what Chief Justice Lee said: "The negative effects of the president's actions and their repercussions are grave, and the benefits to defending the Constitution by removing her from office are overwhelmingly large." The court's decision strips Park Geun-hye of her immunity from criminal prosecution, which will force her to undergo interrogation by prosecutors over her alleged crimes. Back to you, Daeun. Well I guess the big question now is how soon the prosecutors will summon her for questioning and to what kind of punishment she will face if proven guilty of the multiple charges she's accused of. Korea's first-ever impeached president Park Geun-hye attended her first trial hearing in Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday.
She arrived at the court thirty minutes before her trial, which was scheduled for 10 in the morning,... with her hands cuffed and inmate number 503 attached to her clothing.
This is her first public appearance in the 53 days since her detention,... as it was not mandatory for her to attend the two preliminary hearings.
The ousted president faces 18 charges, including receiving or demanding around 53 million U.S. dollars in bribes from conglomerates, including Samsung and Lotte.
When being seated in the courtroom, Park looked straight ahead,... not even taking the slightest glance at her longtime confidante Choi Soon-sil when Choi entered the room.
The two were in court together for the first time, along with Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin.
Choi is charged with receiving bribes, while the Lotte chief Shin is accused of handing out bribes.
This awkward encounter between the defendants occurred as the pair had overlapping charges, leading to the court deciding to merge Park and Choi's case during Tuesday's trial.

We start with news that former president Park Geun-hye has been arrested.
The Seoul Central District Court announced its ruling at slightly after THREE AM, Korea time.... some four hours ago.
She's been detained on a slew of charges including bribery, abuse of power, coercion and leaking government secrets.
Park becomes the third former South Korean president to be arrested... and if found guilty, she could find herself serving many, many years behind bars.
Let's start at Seoul Detention Center, located in Uiwang , Gyeonggi-do Province,... Park's new home for the foreseeable future.
Our Shin Se-min is there for us.
Semin,... what's the atmosphere like there now? Are we seeing any massive protests from Park's supporters like the ones we've seen around her private residence recently?
The current mood here is rather calm, especially compared to a couple of hours ago when the convoy of vehicles carrying the disgraced former president arrived at the detention center at 4:45 AM.
When she arrived,... Park was driven past a large group of die-hard pro-Park supporters asserting her innocence,... as well as those in support of the court's decision.
The level of security has been reduced somewhat since her arrival and we're seeing less activity outside the facility.
Like you said,... this place is going to be the former president's new reality for up to 20-days.
After that time she will be presented with formal charges of bribery, abuse of power, coercion and leaking government secrets that could see her jailed for at least 10 years... perhaps longer.
Remarkable scenes as the former president was driven inside,... looking visibly tired and anxious. Semin,,, tell us more about what Park will go through at Seoul Detention Center. Will she receive any special treatment as the former leader?
No.
It's fair to say that Park's life of comfort is over now.
As with all suspects brought here,... Park has... or will soon go through a physical checkup,... described as an embarrassing process,... as the guards have to make sure the suspects don't have anything they shouldn't.
She will then be required to change into a yellow and green color prison uniform before being transferred to her solitary cell
Size-wise it will be equal to that of the prison cells assigned to past former presidents who had also served some jail time, which is larger than six-and-a-half square meters.
Just like anyone else entering, she will be stripped off of all her personal belongings and will only be given simple toiletries, a blanket and tableware for her meals.
Here at the facility center, Park will lead her life based on rules and guidelines,... such as getting up at 6-30am and lights out at 9-PM.
She will only be allowed a limited number of visitors a day but she will be allowed unlimited access to her lawyers.
And these rules are also being followed by a number of other once-powerful figures who got mixed up in this scandal.
They are Samsung's de facto boss Lee Jae-yong, the woman at the heart of the scandal Choi Soon-sil,her niece Jang Si-ho, Choi's close associate Cha Eun-taek, the ex-presidential chief of staff Kim Ki-choon and the former culture minister Cho Yoon-sun are all jailed here at the facility.
The Korea Correctional site says they are not allowed any contact with each other.

Now let’s hear more on how the court proceedings went this morning from our Hwang Ho-jun, who is there for us.

Daeun, as you said, the Constitutional Court has upheld the motion to impeach President Park Geun-hye... in a unanimous decision by the court's eight justices.
Now, Korea will be required to hold a presidential election within the next 60 days.
The ruling, which was announced by the court's interim Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi at 11 a.m., was televised live, drawing the attention of Koreans and people around the world.
Chief Justice Lee began by refuting the accusation that the trial wasn't fair, citing precedent and saying that legally there was nothing wrong with the way the impeachment motion had been passed by parliament.
Then, she went on to lay out each of the charges against Park Geun-hye.
The justice said it was unconstitutional for Park to have let her confidante, Choi Soon-sil, a civilian with no official government position, meddle in state affairs,... and that Park abused her power to collude with Choi to extort money from conglomerates.
The court dismissed the accusation that Park abused her power in appointing government officials, citing a lack of evidence.
It also dismissed the charge that Park neglected her duty during the Sewol-ho ferry sinking in 2014... saying it did not warrant deliberation by the court.
And in delivering the final verdict, this is what Chief Justice Lee said:
"The negative effects of the president's actions and their repercussions are grave, and the benefits to defending the Constitution by removing her from office are overwhelmingly large."
The court's decision strips Park Geun-hye of her immunity from criminal prosecution, which will force her to undergo interrogation by prosecutors over her alleged crimes.

Moreover, it was also on Wednesday that the Constitutional Court chief justice said the decision on the impeachment trial should be made by March 13th the latest,... while the president's lawyers hinted to resign altogether, which could delay trial proceedings.
These moves just before the Seollal holiday can be interpreted as the president's bid to plea to the nation's conservatives... as the clock ticks faster on the impeachment proceedings. However, neither the president and Choi Soon-sil nor their lawyers have said the series of events were previously arranged.
But, despite the president's hour-long interview in which she claimed she's innocent,.. even the ruling Saenuri Party said she should have been more considerate about the public sentiment - while the splinter Bareun Party criticized the move, calling it 'selfish.'
The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea called the attempt an 'all-out counterattack'... with the minor opposition People's Party asking the president to defend herself at the Constitutional Court or by facing the independent counsel, not through an internet channel.

President Park Geun-hye told the BBC she saw no point in a summit with the Japanese leader unless the country apologised for war-time "wrongdoings".
Concern over regional security has grown in the past year, following North Korea's third nuclear test in February.
Ms Park said nations had to break the "vicious cycle" of Pyongyang's actions.
She said her country would take "firm and unremitting action" in response to any military provocation from North Korea.

Our Kim Han-ul has more. An exclusive interview with President Park Geun-hye was featured on CCTV's prime-time business show called "Global Connection" on Saturday.
The interview was pre-recorded in Korea before she embarked on her four-day state visit to China,... and during the sit-down interview, the CCTV news presenter Rui Chenggang, asked her to elaborate her views on the Korean economy and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
"For China, the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula while maintaining peace and security is an important goal, and this is in line with my policy of pursuing a trust-building process on the Korean Peninsula."
A good amount of time was spent on introducing President Park Geun-hye's personal history on the show.
CCTV reported that the president read Chinese classics such as works by Confucius in order to cope with the difficulties after both her parents, a former president and first lady, were assassinated.
The interview also introduced the fact that she read works by a famous Chinese philosopher Feng Youlan, which provided her with much wisdom in life.
The history of her political career and her path to presidency were also introduced,... and the show highlighted a quote from the president saying "I am married to the country."
President Park received a warm welcome from online users in Chinese, when the CCTV presenter posted Park's hand-written note online, which was given to him after the interview.

Professor Robert Kelly, an international relations expert, discovered just that Friday during an interview with BBC World News about South Korean President Park Geun-hye's impeachment. Kelly, a widely respected political science professor at Pusan National University in South Korea, was providing his expert opinion on camera, from what appeared to be his home office, when his young children came barreling into the room.
As the questioning began, the door opened. A child toddled in.

Then another strolled in, this time in a squeaky walker. And then their mother, Jung-a Kim, burst into the scene, skidding around a corner and frantically trying to herd the wayward young people out the door.

She knocked books off a table before falling to her knees and grabbing the handle to close the door, finally, behind them all.

The interruption, almost slapstick if it had not been real, was over within 40 seconds, during which Professor Kelly veered from apparent mild annoyance to repeated apologies to stifling smiles, while ultimately keeping his composure as he discussed the latest political drama underway in South Korea, where a court had removed President Park Geun-hye from office.
The toddler intrusion starts just as the BBC World presenter, James Menendez, starts to ask him a question.
“And what will it mean for the wider region — I think one of your children has just walked in,” he said to Professor Kelly.
He continues, gamely: “Do you think relations with the North may change?”
“Umm I would be surprised if they do … the um … pardon me. My apologies,” Professor Kelly said, closing his eyes and smiling — or grimacing — as the sound of the objects toppling off the table and squeals of protest came from behind him.
While the professor appeared to do his best to keep the live broadcast on an even professional keel, the clip was inevitably destined to do what these things do: spread widely across the internet.
Yes, it did “get weird.” News organizations and television channels, including Buzzfeed, The Guardian and CNN, picked up the story. Online, many of the comments were sympathetic (“This is TV Gold!” said one), while others said that Professor Kelly had “strong armed” one of the children when reached behind him to repel her advance, all while keeping his eye contact with the camera and continuing to speak.
Professor Kelly, who is an expert on politics on the Korean Peninsula, has been a contributing guest on the BBC for many years, as well as on ITN News and Sky. Many of his media appearances, chronicled on his YouTube page, appear to take place from the same room, which features a map on the wall and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
He could not immediately be reached on Friday, but his online biography and website, Asian Security Blog, notes his academic credentials and many contributions to scholarly publications and news organizations about North and South Korea. His wife, according to his personal profile, is a yoga teacher.

The first questioning of ousted President Park Geun-hye since her arrest late last week will take place on Tuesday.
That's according to prosecutors who said that, although they planned to hold the questioning on Monday,... the date was postponed upon the request of Park's legal representatives who wanted more time to prepare.
Due to complications and costs related to security and transfer, they will visit the detention center,... located south of Seoul,... for the interview, instead of bringing the disgraced leader in.
Former presidents Roh Tae-woo and Chun Doo-hwan, who were arrested over criminal allegations, were also questioned at the detention centers.
The prosecution is widely expected to question Park on bribery allegations that involve her longtime friend Choi Soon-sil and Samsung's de facto leader Lee Jae-yong.
Legal experts say they will see whether prosecutors carry out a face-to-face confrontation with Choi, Lee or former presidential aide Ahn Jong-beom, who are all behind bars in relation to the scandal.
It's also left to seen whether Park will acknowledge parts of the allegations,... especially since she is known to be pleading her innocence.
Prosecutors are expected to hand Park over to the court by mid-April,... before the official campaigning period begins for the May 9th presidential election.

Former president Park Geun-hye,... who made history as the first democratically-elected South Korean leader to be impeached,... had her first day in court on Tuesday.
It was the first time the country had seen her since she was locked up in March.
The former president faces numerous charges including abuse of power and bribery.

Korea's first-ever impeached president Park Geun-hye attended her first trial hearing in Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday.
She arrived at the court thirty minutes before her trial, which was scheduled for 10 in the morning,... with her hands cuffed and inmate number 503 attached to her clothing.
This is her first public appearance in the 53 days since her detention,... as it was not mandatory for her to attend the two preliminary hearings.
The ousted president faces 18 charges, including receiving or demanding around 53 million U.S. dollars in bribes from conglomerates, including Samsung and Lotte.
When being seated in the courtroom, Park looked straight ahead,... not even taking the slightest glance at her longtime confidante Choi Soon-sil when Choi entered the room.
The two were in court together for the first time, along with Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin.
Choi is charged with receiving bribes, while the Lotte chief Shin is accused of handing out bribes.
This awkward encounter between the defendants occurred as the pair had overlapping charges, leading to the court deciding to merge Park and Choi's case during Tuesday's trial.

The current mood here is rather calm, especially compared to a couple of hours ago when the convoy of vehicles carrying the disgraced former president arrived at the detention center at 4:45 AM.
When she arrived,... Park was driven past a large group of die-hard pro-Park supporters asserting her innocence,... as well as those in support of the court's decision.
The level of security has been reduced somewhat since her arrival and we're seeing less activity outside the facility.
Like you said,... this place is going to be the former president's new reality for up to 20-days.
After that time she will be presented with formal charges of bribery, abuse of power, coercion and leaking government secrets that could see her jailed for at least 10 years... perhaps longer.
Remarkable scenes as the former president was driven inside,... looking visibly tired and anxious. Semin,,, tell us more about what Park will go through at Seoul Detention Center. Will she receive any special treatment as the former leader?
No.
It's fair to say that Park's life of comfort is over now.
As with all suspects brought here,... Park has... or will soon go through a physical checkup,... described as an embarrassing process,... as the guards have to make sure the suspects don't have anything they shouldn't.
She will then be required to change into a yellow and green color prison uniform before being transferred to her solitary cell
Size-wise it will be equal to that of the prison cells assigned to past former presidents who had also served some jail time, which is larger than six-and-a-half square meters.
Just like anyone else entering, she will be stripped off of all her personal belongings and will only be given simple toiletries, a blanket and tableware for her meals.
Here at the facility center, Park will lead her life based on rules and guidelines,... such as getting up at 6-30am and lights out at 9-PM.
She will only be allowed a limited number of visitors a day but she will be allowed unlimited access to her lawyers.
And these rules are also being followed by a number of other once-powerful figures who got mixed up in this scandal.
They are Samsung's de facto boss Lee Jae-yong, the woman at the heart of the scandal Choi Soon-sil,her niece Jang Si-ho, Choi's close associate Cha Eun-taek, the ex-presidential chief of staff Kim Ki-choon and the former culture minister Cho Yoon-sun are all jailed here at the facility.
The Korea Correctional site says they are not allowed any contact with each other.

Judges unanimously upheld parliament's decision to impeach Ms Park over her role in a corruption scandal involving her close friend, Choi Soon-sil.

Now let’s hear more on how the court proceedings went this morning from our Hwang Ho-jun, who is there for us.
Ho-jun
Daeun, as you said, the Constitutional Court has upheld the motion to impeach President Park Geun-hye... in a unanimous decision by the court's eight justices.
Now, Korea will be required to hold a presidential election within the next 60 days.
The ruling, which was announced by the court's interim Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi at 11 a.m., was televised live, drawing the attention of Koreans and people around the world.
Chief Justice Lee began by refuting the accusation that the trial wasn't fair, citing precedent and saying that legally there was nothing wrong with the way the impeachment motion had been passed by parliament.
Then, she went on to lay out each of the charges against Park Geun-hye.
The justice said it was unconstitutional for Park to have let her confidante, Choi Soon-sil, a civilian with no official government position, meddle in state affairs,... and that Park abused her power to collude with Choi to extort money from conglomerates.
The court dismissed the accusation that Park abused her power in appointing government officials, citing a lack of evidence.
It also dismissed the charge that Park neglected her duty during the Sewol-ho ferry sinking in 2014... saying it did not warrant deliberation by the court.
And in delivering the final verdict, this is what Chief Justice Lee said:
"The negative effects of the president's actions and their repercussions are grave, and the benefits to defending the Constitution by removing her from office are overwhelmingly large."
The court's decision strips Park Geun-hye of her immunity from criminal prosecution, which will force her to undergo interrogation by prosecutors over her alleged crimes.
