For a university project I had to compose music for a short film, at around 3 minutes in length. I ended up choosing one of my favourite short films, Paperman by Walt Disney Animation and directed by John Kahrs.
I genuinely think it's one of the best short films I've ever seen and the soundtrack by Christophe Beck was just as amazing.
Anyone who listens, thank you! If you like it, by all means you can share it too. Any comments are appreciated too.

I ended up really enjoying the process and so in my spare time decided to compose music for the whole of the clip, not just the 3 minutes. It ended up being a really really fun process in which I learnt a lot about recording too. I only realised after I had started, that I didn't have the full clip. For some reason the source I got the clip from, wasn't official and so therefore there is a bit missing. Also wished I had a better quality video too, but I may end up re-doing the whole thing in HD with the full clip.
Plan on having a go at composing soundtracks to other Disney or animated films too.
All rights for the video do belong to Walt Disney Animation, just the music is owned by me.

Animators and animation fans can see the future of 2D animation in this inside look of the 85th Academy Award Oscar winning short "Paperman", the animated short film that is now playing in front of "Wreck It Ralph". The behind-the-scenes featurette demonstrates some of the techniques used to combine 2D animation and 3D animation. The technique uses traditional hand drawn 2D animation by carrying the information with the 3D CG using a program dubbed "Meander" created by Eric Daniels.

"Paperman" director John Kahrs has described the process: "It's not like a texture map. It's just like painting on the surface of the CG. It acutally moves on a 2D layer that's driven by the CG."
John Kahrs goes on to describe the working process of animating: "...folds in the fabric, hair silhouettes and the like come from of the commited design decision-making that comes with the 2D drawn process. Our animators can change things, actually erase away the CG underlayer if they want, and change the profile of the arm."
2D animation has, for some time now, taken a backseat to 3D computer graphics but John Kahrs has stated that although he does not believe they are ready to do a feature length film using the technique that it is a direction that they are eventually going to move toward and that Disney believes there is a strong future ahead for this technology.
"Paperman" is one of the 10 animated shorts being considered for an Oscar at the next Academy Awards; as an update: it made it to the short list and won the Oscar.

Paperman
Paperman (stylized as paperman) is a 2012 black-and-white 3D romantic comedy short film. Produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and directed by John Kahrs, the short blends traditional animation and computer animation. It won both the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 85th Academy Awards and the Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject at the 40th Annie Awards.Paperman was the first animated short film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios to win an Academy Award since It's Tough to Be a Bird in 1970.
Plot
A young accountant named George is standing on an elevated train platform in 1940s New York City, holding a folder, when he is hit by a flying piece of paper. The paper is chased by a young woman named Meg who lost it to a gust of wind from a passing train. The same thing happens to George when a subsequent gust of wind from another incoming train dislodges one of the papers from his folder and blows it into Meg's face, leaving a lipstick-smudged kiss imprinted on the paper, much to her amusement when George retrieves it. He is entranced by the lipstick mark and Meg's beauty, and therefore misses her boarding the departing train. The two exchange looks as she departs.

John Kahrs
John Kahrs is an American animator and film director.
Kahrs attended NSCAD University, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1990. He began his career at Blue Sky Studios in New York, where he worked as an animator between 1990 and 1997. He later moved to Pixar, where he worked on such films as A Bug's Life, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. After ten years at Pixar, he moved over to Disney, where he animated on Bolt, Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen, and was an animation supervisor on Tangled.
In 2013, he won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for his 2012 short film, Paperman.
In August 2013, he left Walt Disney Animation Studios to develop his own projects. In January 2014, it was reported that he will direct for Paramount Animation an animated film Shedd.

Walt Disney
Walter Elias "Walt" Disney (/ˈdɪzni/; December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) was an American entrepreneur, cartoonist, animator, voice actor, and film producer. He was a prominent figure within the American animation industry and throughout the world, and is regarded as a cultural icon, known for his influence and contributions to entertainment during the 20th century. Animation
Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation.
Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape, digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced.
Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second.
History
Early examples of attempts to capture the phenomenon of motion into a still drawing can be found in paleolithic cave paintings, where animals are often depicted with multiple legs in superimposed positions, clearly attempting to convey the perception of motion.

It ended up being a really really fun process in which I learnt a lot about recording too. I only realised after I had started, that I didn't have the full clip. For some reason the source I got the clip from, wasn't official and so therefore there is a bit missing. Also wished I had a better quality video too, but I may end up re-doing the whole thing in HD with the full clip.
Plan on having a go at composing soundtracks to other Disney or animated films too.

For a university project I had to compose music for a short film, at around 3 minutes in length. I ended up choosing one of my favourite short films, Paperman by Walt Disney Animation and directed by John Kahrs.
I genuinely think it's one of the best short films I've ever seen and the soundtrack by Christophe Beck was just as amazing.

Animators and animation fans can see the future of 2D animation in this inside look of the 85th Academy Award Oscar winning short "Paperman", the animated short film that is now playing in front of "Wreck It Ralph". The behind-the-scenes featurette demonstrates some of the techniques used to combine 2D animation and 3D animation. The technique uses traditional hand drawn 2D animation by carrying the information with the 3D CG using a program dubbed "Meander" created by Eric Daniels.

John Kahrs goes on to describe the working process of animating: "...folds in the fabric, hair silhouettes and the like come from of the commited design decision-making that comes with the 2D drawn process. Our animators can change things, actually erase away the CG underlayer if they want, and change the profile of the arm."
2D animation has, for some time now, taken a backseat to 3D computer graphics but John Kahrs has stated that although he does not believe they are ready to do a feature length film using the technique that it is a direction that they are eventually going to move toward and that Disney believes there is a strong future ahead for this technology.
"Paperman" is one of the 10 animated shorts being considered for an Oscar at the next Academy Awards; as an update: it made it to the short list and won the Oscar.
