For me, grilled bangus (milkfish) is one of the best Filipino foods! ►Subscribe to my YouTube channel for more food videos: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe ►Follow my Instagram for current updates: https://www.instagram.com/migrationology/ Pochok Bangusan is a local carinderia in Quezon City that serves an amazing version of grilled bangus, which is grilled milkfish, and it happens to be one of my personal favorite things to eat in the Philippines. The local restaurant is family fun, and they have all the typical Filipino food dishes set up and pre-cooked at the front of the restaurant when you arrive. All the dishes you can point to and choose from are delicious, but the real magic of eating at Pochok Bangusan is their grilled milkfish. Milkfish is the national fish of the Philippines, and it’s something that you have to eat when you’re there. To make their grilled bangus (milkfish), they first flame grilled the fish, and I mean when he stuck it on the grill, it ignited into flames as the oiliness of the fish touched the hot coals. The fire was also fanned to keep it flaming hot throughout the grilled process. After grilling the fish on both sides, he then flipped it over on the skin side down, and topped it with a few heaping spoons of green tomato relish. The fish was creamy and sort of dry like a tuna, and the green tomato topping was sour and oniony. It was a perfect combination of ingredients. Along with the grilled milkfish, Ying and I also chose a number of other Filipino food dishes that were already prepared including chicken organs adobo (I would highly recommend it if you like organs like we do), menudo which was a little different than any other version of menudo I’ve had, bulalo which is a famous Filipino food of bone marrow soup, and another of the of my favorite Filipino dishes that I tried for the first time, which was a roasted eggplant topped in krill paste / shrimp paste, and topped with a handful of chopped green mango. The combination of all the foods we ordered, and especially the grilled milkfish, is was really made eating at Pochok Bangusan so memorable. Additionally, the family that runs the carinderia (local Filipino food restaurant / street food restaurant) were very friendly and you could tell that they enjoyed the food they were cooking and their customers. If you’re looking for wonderful Filipino local food in Manila (it’s actually in Quezon City, but in Metro Manila), Pochok Bangusan is a fantastic place to eat. Thanks to https://coconuts.co/manila/food-drink/carinderia-crawl-e22-grilled-bangus-and-bulalo-pochok-bangusan/ for the recommendation. Farmland SUGGESTED LEAD-IN As environmental awareness grows, sustainable and organic farming is gaining popularity. One way farmers in the Philippines are avoiding chemical fertilisers is by using safe micro-organisms. They're not only inexpensive, but they help increase productivity and soil quality. VOICE-OVER: Tomatoes are one of the organic crops grown in the Philippines. And it's largely thanks to this man, Gil Caradang. He aims to spread the organic farming message -- especially the use of micro-organisms. He runs seminars for farmers at his farm near the capital Manila. UPSOUND (English) "Nothing goes in nothing goes out. Whatever you take from the land you have to put it back." SUPER CAPTION: Gil Carandang, organic farmer: Carandang hopes his seminars encourage farmers to use alternatives to chemicals. By showing them how to improve soil with microbes, he hopes to help them reduce farming costs -- and to protect the environment. SOUNDBITE (English) "One of the two major problems or concern of any farmer is one, to improve soil fertility and second is the control of pest and diseases. These beneficial microbes is very pivotal in improving soil fertility and pest control for the simple reason that the microbes help in breaking down available food in a particular ecosystem that make it available to the plant.". SUPER CAPTION: Gil Carandang, organic farmer UPSOUND "So we use milk." SUPER CAPTION: Gil Carandang, organic farmer This is how the microbes are cultivated. No fancy techniques -- just bacteria and fungi gathered from a local forest, mixed with everyday ingredients. This home-cooked Filipino food meal was amazing! ►Subscribe to my YouTube channel for more food videos: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe ►Follow my Instagram for current updates: https://www.instagram.com/migrationology/ Thank you to my friend Edzen and her entire family for warmly inviting us to their home and sharing some of the best Filipino food with my wife and I, that we had during our trip to Manila, Philippines. Tondo is an area in Manila that has a pretty bad reputation, and is know for not being the safest area of Manila to visit. But I have a friend Edzen, who is from Tondo, and she invited me over to her house, saying that her Mom would be cooking, I knew it was an opportunity that I did not want to miss. We arrived to Tondo, deep in Manila, and met up with Edzen and met some of her family. Her Mom is one of the most well known Filipino food cooks in the entire neighborhood, and she even has her own small carinderia (local restaurant). We first started cooking, and Edzen’s Mother showed me how to make dinuguan, which is a Filipino blood stew, and one of my personal favorite Filipino dishes. The blood is cooked down with vinegar, and creates a full bodied rich sauce. And it was definitely the best dinuguan that I’ve ever had. We also had ginataang kuhol, which are a type of snail dish from Bicol, which was cooked in coconut milk, and sinaing na tulingan, which is fish boiled in banana leaves with some kind of a fruit and herbs. Finally, for dessert we had biko, a sticky rice and coconut milk dessert. It was an amazing home cooked Filipino food meal! Tondo is full of Manila street food snacks, and so after lunch, we walked around the neighborhood, met some incredible people and friendly kids, and had some street food snacks. Here are the snacks we ate in order of eating them in the video. Banana Q - 12 PHP ($0.24) Ginataang halo halo - 20 PHP ($0.40) Binatog - 10 PHP ($0.20) Kutsinta - 5 PHP ($0.10) Isaw - 5 PHP ($0.10) per skewer It was a wonderful day eating home cooked Filipino food and spending time hanging out with Edzen in Tonod and eating more street food snacks. Although Tondo is a rough area of Manila, there are so many amazing and friendly people that live there. Thank you again to Edzen and her entire family for graciously inviting us over! -- Camera gear I use: Main camera: http://amzn.to/2dEL3hv Main lens: http://amzn.to/2e5Lum6 2nd camera: http://amzn.to/2mczuDx 2nd lens: http://amzn.to/2mcEGau Microphone: http://amzn.to/2dEr9Z9 Gorillapod: http://amzn.to/2epFsQx *These are Amazon affiliate links I would love to connect with you!
