The Nabataeans, also Nabateans (/ˌnæbəˈtiːənz/; Arabic: الأنباط al-ʾAnbāṭ , compare to Ancient Greek: Ναβαταίος, Latin: Nabatæus), were an Arabic people who inhabited northern Arabia and the Southern Levant, and whose settlements, most prominently the assumed capital city of Petra, in AD 37 – c. 100, gave the name of Nabatene to the borderland between Arabia and Syria, from the Euphrates to the Red Sea. Their loosely controlled trading network, which centered on strings of oases that they controlled, where agriculture was intensively practiced in limited areas, and on the routes that linked them, had no securely defined boundaries in the surrounding desert. Trajan conquered the Nabataean kingdom, annexing it to the Roman Empire, where their individual culture, easily identified by their characteristic finely potted painted ceramics, became dispersed in the general Greco-Roman culture and was eventually lost. They were later converted to Christianity. Jane Taylor, a writer, describes them as "one of the most gifted peoples of the ancient world".
Petra (Arabic: البترا, Al-Batrāʾ; Ancient Greek: Πέτρα), originally known as Raqmu to the Nabataeans, is a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved.
Established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Arab Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as Jordan's most-visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor) in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
The site remained unknown to the western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. UNESCO has described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage". Petra was named amongst the New7Wonders of the World in 2007 and was also chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of the "28 Places to See Before You Die".

Documentary about the Nabateans tribe in Jordan. The Jordan Desert is a beautiful, natural landscape and was once home to a legendary and mysterious people that fell into oblivion some centuries ago, the Nabateans, whose realm was at its zenith some two thousand years ago and resulted in some of the most fascinating ruins of antiquity. Due to their remote and obscure location the remains of Petra, a legendary Nabatean city of rock, were for many years merely regarded as a myth and only a few local Bedouin tribes knew of the existence of certain ancient buildings in the south of what is now Jordan. Both El-Barid and Petra were located in a very favourable position at the junction of several ancient trading routes that led from the Arabian Peninsula to as far as Anatolia and into today’s Syr...

The infrastructure of Petra, the capital of the ancient Nabateans, still remains a mystery to most people who visit this heritage site. The focus of tourists when they arrive to Petra is to find splendid monuments, temples, shrines, churches and market places, but the water infrastructure and the way Nabateans preserved water for irrigation and drinking is relatively unknown. http://proxyponder.com/2017/06/ancient-nabatean-underground-water-systems-petra-uncovered/ Source: http://www.jordantimes.com/news/local/swiss-archaeologist-examines-ancient-nabateans-water-technology Music: Cambodian Odyssey by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1...
In 1961, archaeologists in southern Israel discovered a mysterious set of documents. They provide valuable clues into the elevated status of Nabataean women in the first century AD. From: SACRED SITES: Petra http://bit.ly/2cGTfSs
After an hour speaking on Women in Islam, Jay Smith and Sarah Foster did an additional 22 minutes, 'off the cuff' talk, on who exactly Allah was. This was unplanned, but introduced by the Musim crowd themselves. Watch as Jay and Sarah show how the god of Islam, Allah, is the same god as that worshipped by the earlier Nabataean culture, which predated Islam, and gave Islam its language (Arabic). What's more, the Nabataean 'Allah' has a wife named 'Al-lat' (as well as 'Al Uzza'), and these are two of the three names of the goddesses found in the Qur'an, in Surah 53:19-20, which is better known as the 'Satanic Verses'. The sources for this incident are too numerous to quote here, but you can find the story in: 1. Ibn Ishaq, pages 165-167 2. Al-Tabari, Volume 6, pp. 107-112 3. Tafsir al-Ja...
A video stroll through one of the most spectacular archeological sites in the world. Extremely well-preserved structures carved into rock stretching back to over two thousand years ago. Petra was the center of the Nabatean kingdom which existed around the time of Jesus Christ. I originally made this in stereoscopic 3D, which you can find on the YouTube channel Maxheadspace3D.
