Throughout the years, the craft has collected countless observations of the tiny planet and its moons, offering a remarkable look at the landscape of these distant worlds. Now, the space agency has released breathtaking flyover videos using the New Horizons data and digital elevation models, revealing a close-up look at everything from ominous craters of Pluto’s ‘Cthulhu Macula,’ to the bizarre ‘moated mountains’ on its largest moon, Charon. In recognition of the two-year anniversary of New Horizons' Pluto flyby, NASA also revealed a stunning set of global elevation maps, showing the complex terrain of Pluto and Charon.

A stunning glimpse INSIDE the red planet: NASA image reveals bizarre subsurface 'worms' exposed in a giant crater
A stunning new infrared image from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has revealed the worm-like fissures blanketing the floor of a mysterious crater on Mars. The image shows the spread of features known as ‘ejecta,’ or the material thrown across the surface after an impact. In this view, the breathtaking colours indicate the presence of different rocks and minerals, including iron-rich minerals such as olivine and pyroxene.

Mars mission astronauts rehearse Orion water landings off Texas in first open water space capsule tests since the Apollo program
NASA astronauts training for a possible mission to Mars have been practising water maneuvers in a mock-up Orion space capsule in the Gulf of Mexico. Several astronauts trained Thursday in the open water, about 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) from Galveston, Texas. An Orion spacecraft is being prepared at Johnson Space Center in nearby Houston. It is intended for flight with NASA's new SLS or Space Launch System, the most powerful rocket the agency says it has ever built. Inset, the much smaller Apollo capsule.
Heart-warming images show a wild lioness nursing a baby leopard for the first time in a 'truly unique' act of love
Lioness Nosikitok was found with the little cub around near her den where her own cubs were hidden in Ndutu Safari Lodge in Tanzania's Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Most lionesses would kill a baby leopard as they are direct competition in the food chain but this attentive mother (pictured, main image and inset) has taken this tiny spotted cub. Wildlife experts say this inter-species suckling has never been seen before.
What is the truth about the mysterious black ring-shaped UFOs appearing in skies around the world sparking conspiracy theories?
The bizarre black ring-shaped UFO was filmed floating above the M62 near Birkenshaw (right). It is the latest in a string of strange sightings with one filmed floating over Disneyland in California just last year (bottom left). In 2015 eerie footage emerged of a 320 feet-wide (100 metre-wide) ring of smoke floating over clear skies in Kazakhstan (top left). But one expert has revealed the latest black ring was simply the byproduct of cannon fire of a battle reenactment at the nearby Yorkshire Wartime Event.
Mystery as hundreds of 4,000 year old stone 'tower' tombs found in Jordan's Dead Fire desert which was abandoned for 2,000 years
A team of researchers led by Leiden University in the Netherlands has found two distinct types of tomb (left) built in the third and first millennium BC in the Jebel Qurma region of Jordan (bottom right). They believe the area was virtually uninhabited for roughly 1,500 to 2,000 years. Many of the earlier tombs are covered by stone stone piles called cairns (top right).
'It's a shadow!': Ghost hunters claim to have captured the moment the 'spirit' of ancient Egyptian priest Nesyamun returns to his casket at museum
A couple have captured footage of a 'hooded shadowy figure' that they believe is the ghost of an Ancient Egyptian priest haunting the museum where his mummy is kept. In the video all of the ghost-hunting equipment belonging to Sean Reynolds and Rebecca Palmer can be heard going off before a black shadow is seen 'walking' in front of the camera and apparently into a tomb. Parents-of-three Sean and Rebecca were filming for their paranormal TV show at Leeds City Museum in March this year when the hooded apparition crossed their paths.
Farewell Dippy: Natural History Museum replaces popular dinosaur centrepiece with blue whale named Hope to inspire love of the living world
Diving majestically down from the heights of the Natural History Museum’s grand entrance hall, this is Hope the blue whale, greeting visitors with jaws open wide. It’s a long way from a lonely sandbank off the south-east coast of Ireland where the giant mammal was found thrashing for its life more than a century ago before a sailor put it out of its misery. From today, Hope (pictured main) takes prime position as the museum’s most jaw-dropping exhibit and the first that most visitors will see. It replaces Dippy the diplodocus whose replica skeleton had graced the entrance hall since 1979. The 20-year-old female blue whale had struggled for survival for a day after getting stuck on a sandbank near Wexford in 1891 before lifeboat pilot Edward Wickham killed it with an improvised harpoon.
'And you thought your day was bad': Dramatic footage shows a zebra escaping the jaws of a crocodile while crossing a river... only to be eaten by two lionesses on the other side
The video, filmed in Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve, shows the animal escaping the jaws of a vicious crocodile during its perilous journey. It makes its way to the riverbank before clambering up into grassland. But the zebra's nightmare has only just begun as a lioness hides in the grass waiting to pounce.
Jupiter's 10,000 mile-wide 'Great Red Spot' up close: NASA releases first historic images from Juno flyby
NASA has released the first images from its Juno probe's historic flyby of the the biggest storm in the universe - Jupiter's 'Great Red Spot.' The probe, which has been monitoring Jupiter's surface for just over a year, passed about 5,600 miles (9,000 kilometres) above the Great Red Spot. Today, the first three unprocessed 'raw' images were revealed by NASA, allowing amateur astronomers to process the data to create these stunning images. The biggest storm in the solar system, it appears as a deep red orb surrounded by layers of pale yellow, orange and white. Winds inside the storm have been measured at several hundreds of miles per hour, NASA astronomers said.
Restoration on the Vatican's frescoes has unveiled two new paintings by Raphael from 500 years ago
Researchers discovered the paintings of two hidden females in the the Room of Constantine inside the Papal Apartments of the Vatican during a one-year restoration project. Representing Friendship (left) and Justice (right), the two women are believed to have been painted by Raphael shortly before his death in 1520. But their true value became hidden after his students added cherubs, soldiers and dragons to the walls surrounding his artwork following his death.
An iceberg the size of DELAWARE - one of the largest ever recorded - has snapped off the West Antarctic ice shelf
After months of anticipation, an enormous iceberg with an area of 2,239 sq miles (5,800 sq km) has finally broken off the Larsen C ice sheet in West Antarctica (right). The iceberg, which weighs a staggering trillion tons, was found to have split off from the ice sheet (top left) after scientists examined the latest satellite data from the area. The ice shelf has decreased in size by 10 per cent, leaving the ice front (bottom left) at its most retreated position ever recorded.
Does it work for you? Staring at this simple optical illusion for 30 seconds can noticeably improve your vision, claim scientists
Psychologists at the Universities of York and Glasgow found that how people see is not only dictated by the shape and condition of the eyes but also perceptual processes in the brain. The team discovered that visual acuity—the ability to see fine detail—can be enhanced by an illusion known as the 'expanding motion aftereffect'. While under its spell, viewers can read letters that are too small for them to read normally - and you can try it for yourself with this simple test
Neolithic 'House of the Dead' burial mound that could contain the ancestors of the people who built Stonehenge is unearthed
The 5,000-year-old burial mound, which contains a central tomb hidden by mounds of earth, was discovered in Cat's Brain in Wiltshire, south west England. Researchers said the ancient site is located halfway between Stonehenge (inset) and the stone circle at Avebury, suggesting that it may be the final resting place of people who lived close to the time that the monuments were built.
