Glendalough (Gleann Dá Loch), meaning 'The Valley of the Two Lakes' is a glacial valley in County Wicklow, Ireland, renowned for an Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin. Situated in the Wicklow Mountains National Park and boasting some of Ireland's best mountain scenery with its deep moody lakes, rushing rivers and tumbling waterfalls, the Glendalough Valley is amongst the country's top tourist attractions offering incredible walking opportunities. From the 6th century monastic ruins with their iconic round tower near the Lower Lake, to the C19th lead mines at the 'Miners' Village' at the far end of the Upper Lake, Glendalough is a landscape replete with history and heritage. Autumn is one of the finest times to visit as the deciduous trees and bracken turn rich shades of russet, orange and yellow, and the deer rut (mating season) is at its height.
Our circular route took us from the monastic site skirting the western side of the Lower Lake, past the shore of the Upper Lake and along the Miners' Road towards the zig-zag track up to Van Diemen's Land and the Glenealo Valley. From here we followed the boardwalk along the Spinc and the descent to the Poulanass Waterfall, before passing the eastern side of the Lower Lake along another boardwalk back to the monastic site.

Wicklow
Wicklow (Irish: Cill Mhantáin, meaning "church of the toothless one") is the county town of County Wicklow and the capital of the Mid-East Region in Ireland. Located south of Dublin on the east coast of the island, it has a population of 10,356 according to the 2011 census. The town is to the east of the N11 route between Dublin and Wexford. Wicklow is also linked to the rail network, with Dublin commuter services now extending to the town. Additional services connect with Arklow, Wexford and Rosslare Europort, a main ferry port. There is also a commercial port, mainly importing timber and textiles. The River Vartry is the main river which flows through the town.
Geography
Wicklow town forms a rough semicircle around Wicklow harbour. To the immediate north lies 'The Murrough', a popular grassy walking area beside the sea, and the eastern coastal strip. The Murrough is a place of growing commercial use, so much so that a road by-passing the town directly to the commercial part of the area commenced construction in 2008 and was completed in summer of 2010. The eastern coastal strip includes Wicklow bay, a crescent shaped stone beach approximately 10 km in length.

County Wicklow
County Wicklow (Irish: Contae Chill Mhantáin, [ˈkɔnˠt̪ˠeː ˈçɪl̪ʲ ˈwanˠt̪ˠaːnʲ]) is a county in Ireland. The last of the traditional 32 counties to be formed, as late as 1606, it is part of the Mid-East Region and is also located in the province of Leinster. It is named after the town of Wicklow, which derives from the Old Norse name Víkingaló, which means "Vikings' Meadow". Wicklow County Council is the local authority for the county. The population of the county is 136,640 according to the 2011 census.
Wicklow is colloquially known as the Garden of Ireland. It is the 17th largest of Ireland's 32 counties by area, being thirty-three miles in length by twenty miles in breadth, and 15th largest by population. It is the fourth largest of Leinster's 12 counties by size and the fifth largest in terms of population. Between 2006 and 2011 the population of the county grew between 5–10%
The boundaries of the county were extended in 1957 by the Local Government Act which "detached lands from the County of Dublin and from the jurisdiction and powers of the Council of the County of Dublin" near Bray and added them to the County of Wicklow. The adjoining counties are Wexford to the south, Carlow to the south-west, Kildare to the west and Dublin to the north.

i/ˈaɪərlənd/; Irish: Éire [ˈeːɾʲə]; Ulster-Scots: Airlann [ˈɑːrlən]) is an island in the North Atlantic. It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles, the third-largest in Europe, and the twentieth-largest on Earth.
Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland (officially named Ireland), which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and located in the northeast of the island. In 2011 the population of Ireland was about 6.4 million, ranking it the second-most populous island in Europe after Great Britain. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.

It was named after the town of Wicklow, which derives from the Old Norse name Víkingalág or Wykynlo. The population of the county is 126,194 according to the 2006 census. Wicklow is the 17th largest of Ireland's 32 counties in area and 17th largest in terms of population. It is the fourth largest of Leinster's 12 counties in size and fifth largest in terms of population. Wicklow is also known as the Garden of Ireland

While in Kilkenny City you have the option of combining into your visit a trip to the historical Dunmore Caves. It is a place where myth & history blend. Dunmore is the site of the worst Viking massacre in Irish history (928AD). Explore the cave and its exhibits which are packed with many treasures and archaeological finds. The guides make it a magical experience particularly when on some occasions there is a live tin whistle rendition in the bowels of the cave. The visit to the caves is entirely your choice on the day, the price of which is included in the ticket.
After lunch we travel through the county of Carlow into the Wild and Rugged Wicklow Mountains. The landscape will change from lush green rich pasture with gentle valleys to the dramatic, the breath taking ancient glacial valleys of the Wicklow Gap. Feast your eyes on the spectacular countryside and its scenic treasures, mountains, native plants and wildlife (A photographer’s dream).
The Wicklow Gap and its scenery is the most varied on the island of Ireland. The journey through the mountains brings you through the countryside where famous movies such as Brave Heart, and PS I Love You were filmed. Enjoy a 15 minute stop for a stroll and photographic opportunities on top of the Wicklow Mountains overlooking the glens and valleys of County Wicklow.
Continuing over the Mountains we arrive at the world famous heritage site of Glendalough (Glen of two lakes). This Monastic site dates from 600 AD. It was the centre of learning and from where Christianity was re-introduced to northern and central Europe after what is known as the dark ages. Have you heard of “Ireland, land of Saints and Scholars”? Well Glendalough is why. Saint Kevin founded his monastery in this valley and today much of the ancient architecture remain such as St Kevin’s Kitchen, Church and Round Tower. The tower was constructed as shelter for the Monks and their Latin Biblical manuscripts from the barbarous marauding Vikings.
The glen of the two lakes in the Irish language is Glendalough. The lower lake takes under an hour to walk and the upper just over an hour. Departing Glendalough we journey through the highest village in Ireland known as Roundwood, see the Sugarloaf Mountains which prior to the ice age were higher than the Alps, the Powerscourt Estate and the Glen of Imaal just before reaching Kilnacanogue. Sit back and be entertained by our tour guide with some story-telling and traditional Irish music. We arrive back in Dublin city at approximately 6pm. It was founded by the Vikings within a wonderful valley where the River Liffey flows into the Atlantic Ocean. After the Vikings, the Normans conquered the city and ruled over it for seven hundred years and under King Henry The Eighth Dublin became the capital of what was then a British colony. South west of Dublin is Kildare, the heart of Ireland’s horse racing. In 1902 the Irish national stud, Tully House, was founded there. Rich and eccentric Scottish brewery heir, Colonel William Hall-Walker, had the idea of a creating unique horse breeding scheme that would be based upon astrological calculation. The Wicklow Mountains are a natural paradise of mountains, swamps and lakes, beautiful valleys and a fascinating mountain landscape to the south of Dublin. Jerpoint Abbey near Thomastown dates back to the twelfth century and is one of the most beautiful Cistercian ruins in Ireland. It was founded in around 1160 by Donal Mac Gillapatrick, the King Of Ossory. The Cistercians built the monastery in characteristic style and one of the stone sarcophaguses is said to contain the bones of Holy Nicolas who was buried there by the Crusaders. Although much of it has remained unspoiled, Ireland has undergone much change. It is a land of great natural beauty, healthy commercial success and excellent hospitality: a wild green island set in the wild Atlantic Ocean!

Hi Everyone! Today I'm bringing you another Irish travel vlog and this time I'm exploring my home county, Wicklow! I love getting out and about in Wicklow and going on little adventures, there's always something to do and something new to see! In this vlog I've taken you to some of my favourite places and I've ventured out to some new places for me too.
I began by taking a trip out to The Happy Pear cafe in Greystones to have a bite to eat. While I was there I actually got to meet and film with the cafe owners, The Happy Pear themselves, Dave and Steve Flynn! I spent a couple of hours out in the cafe chatting with the twins and eating delicious food. Overall I had a wonderful day! As I mentioned in the vlog I can say it's probably the happiest, healthiest restaurant you'll come across here in Ireland and well worth the visit. Next myself and my friend Laura headed out to Powerscourt in Enniskerry for some afternoon tea, very fancy! The tea was €39 per person but well worth the money for the experience we had. The food was top quality, the service was impeccable and we just felt so at ease while there. A couple of weeks later I returned to Powerscourt but this time to check out the estate and gardens. The afternoon tea was in the Hotel and Spa Resort and to enter the gardens there is a charge. An adult ticket was €9.50 but again, worth the money. We spent a couple of hours walking around in awe.I can completely understand why they are award winning gardens! Irelands highest waterfall is also on the grounds but unfortunately we ran out of time so didn't get to check it out. We'll definitely be back though!
For the remainder of the vlog I'm exploring some of my favourite areas on foot which it what I love to do here. I visited Miners Cross, The Motte Stone and Avoca Handerweavers in Avoca. I took a trip out and completed a hill climb in Glendalough and finally I climbed a popular mountain here in Wicklow, The Great Sugarloaf.
