On this episode of Beyond the Tide, Coyote finds a Horseshoe Crab while tide pooling in Maine!
More closely related to spiders and scorpions than crabs these ocean dwelling creatures have roamed the seas since the time of the dinosaurs. Today they can be found all over the world but only come close enough to shore certain times a year to reproduce. However timing these events can be hard to predict and it was only be mere chance that the Brave Wilderness team was able to happen upon one of these bizarre arthropods.

First shoe of the day on a bright but frosty morning. This is Ruby.
Every horse is different and I try to shoe for each ones individual needs, so this is for those few people who didn't like my quarter clipped front shoe on my last shoeing video although the horses pre-existing condition required that style of shoe...

Have you been wonder whether or not horses need to have shoes? Watch this video to find out!
Horses’ hooves continuously grow like our finger nails, so none of this causes any pain for the horse. During this entire process you can see that the horse is very compliant. The shoe needs to be the right size for the horse. The farrier will shape the shoe to make sure it fits properly. Then the shoe is nailed on. Farriers need to know and understand the anatomy of the hoof to make sure they do everything the right way to not cause injury to the horse. After about 6 to 8 weeks the farrier will see the horse again to remove shoes and put new ones on.

Pulling off horseshoes is not as hard as it may seem. You don't need to call a farrier if you have just a few inexpensive tools that you can purchase at any tack shop or Tractor Supply. If done correctly, you can avoid causing discomfort to yourself and the horse. This video will show you an easy way to pull horseshoes that will save hoof wall and not hurt your horse.
A bad farrier, also called a horseshoer, pulls the horseshoes off in a few jerks which can cause pain and bruising to the horse's foot. Sometimes they don't even file off the clenches. The horse usually jerks away because it can be painful. If it looks like it hurts, it probably does. Good farriers or horsehoers can pull shoes without causing pain and doesn't chip the hoof wall in the process. This video shows you how to pull horsehsoes easily and without hurting the horse's hoof.
If you are leaving your horse without shoes, It's a good idea to slightly round the edges and file the toe slightly square so the hoof wall doesn't chip while barefoot between horseshoeings. This will help keep the foot healthy until you can get the farrier again.

Horseshoe
A horseshoe is a fabricated product, normally made of metal, although sometimes made partially or wholly of modern synthetic materials, designed to protect a horse's hoof from wear. Shoes are attached on the palmar surface of the hooves, usually nailed through the insensitive hoof wall that is anatomically akin to the human toenail, although much larger and thicker. However, there are many cases where shoes are glued.
The fitting of horseshoes is a professional occupation, conducted by a farrier, who specializes in the preparation of feet, assessing potential lameness issues, and fitting appropriate shoes, including remedial features where required. More closely related to spiders and scorpions than crabs these ocean dwelling creatures have roamed the seas since the time of the dinosaurs. Today they can be found all over the world but only come close enough to shore certain times a year to reproduce. However timing these events can be hard to predict and it was only be mere chance that the Brave Wilderness team was able to happen upon one of these bizarre arthropods.

Every horse is different and I try to shoe for each ones individual needs, so this is for those few people who didn't like my quarter clipped front shoe on my last shoeing video although the horses pre-existing condition required that style of shoe...

Have you been wonder whether or not horses need to have shoes? Watch this video to find out!
Horses’ hooves continuously grow like our finger nails, so none of this causes any pain for the horse. During this entire process you can see that the horse is very compliant. The shoe needs to be the right size for the horse. The farrier will shape the shoe to make sure it fits properly. Then the shoe is nailed on. Farriers need to know and understand the anatomy of the hoof to make sure they do everything the right way to not cause injury to the horse. After about 6 to 8 weeks the farrier will see the horse again to remove shoes and put new ones on.

Pulling off horseshoes is not as hard as it may seem. You don't need to call a farrier if you have just a few inexpensive tools that you can purchase at any tack shop or Tractor Supply. If done correctly, you can avoid causing discomfort to yourself and the horse. This video will show you an easy way to pull horseshoes that will save hoof wall and not hurt your horse.
A bad farrier, also called a horseshoer, pulls the horseshoes off in a few jerks which can cause pain and bruising to the horse's foot. Sometimes they don't even file off the clenches. The horse usually jerks away because it can be painful. If it looks like it hurts, it probably does. Good farriers or horsehoers can pull shoes without causing pain and doesn't chip the hoof wall in the process. This video shows you how to pull horsehsoes easily and without hurting the horse's hoof.
If you are leaving your horse without shoes, It's a good idea to slightly round the edges and file the toe slightly square so the hoof wall doesn't chip while barefoot between horseshoeings. This will help keep the foot healthy until you can get the farrier again.
