NEW SINGLE “LESS THAN” OUT NOW

ADD VIOLENCE finds Nine Inch Nails becoming more accessible and impenetrable at the same time. The sonic palette expands significantly from Not The Actual Events, incorporating elements of beauty into the dark dissonance. The narrative arc linking the three records begins to emerge through the disassociated lyrics and the provocative and clue-filled cover artwork and accompanying physical component, available exclusively through the NIN.com store.

from esquire.com:

“Five minutes spent on Trent Reznor’s loud, mournful wailing. A song that might as well have been written for Laura Palmer. “I can’t remember what she came here for,” he sings. “She’s gone, she’s gone, she’s gone away.” Lynch pulls focus on the heart of his story in this moment before whisking us into a nightmare past. Laura Palmer is the heart of it all. She is a vision of innocence corrupted, molested and killed by her father. Her spirit in gold, gifted to the world, like some celestial force for an enduring good in all the madness.”

Coming to PBS in September, The Vietnam War features a new score by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross.

HBO will debut the four-part documentary, The Defiant Ones, on July 9th.

Telling the story of the improbable partnership between Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, the film features interviews with Trent Reznor, Eminem, Tom Petty, Nas, Bono, Bruce Springsteen and many other artists who have worked with and been influenced by the pair.

The music was composed by Atticus Ross, Leopold Ross and Claudia Sarne.

Trent and Atticus are “performing” nightly at Banksy’s Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem for the next several weeks.  The duo have created arrangements of new and old material specifically to be played via the player piano in the lounge of the hotel nightly at 8PM.  If you’re staying there or in the neighborhood, stop by for a drink.

EXCERPT

Todd Rundgren is a hero of mine. His records (solo and Utopia!), his songwriting, his production and his musicianship… all played a huge role shaping me into who I am. I still listen to (and study) A Wizard, A True Star and Something / Anything regularly, and I suggest you do, too. Atticus and I sent Todd a wealth of ideas for his new record. He worked on this track and released the “proper” version HERE. We then took what he did and moved it forward (or backward, depending on your perspective) into THIS.
Enjoy-
TR (not Todd Rundgren, the other TR)

Both acts along with film composer Hans Zimmer and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea will perform pre-recorded gigs in the piano bar of the artist’s Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem.

The gigs are recorded specifically for the piano which plays along unmanned, much like the piano in in the HBO drama Westworld, to the artist’s live tracks. You can view recent footage of Elton John performing at the venue below.

Last year, Banksy hosted Dismaland—his dystopian amusement park. Run The Jewels, Savages, Pussy Riot, Massive Attack, and others performed at the pop-up park.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Ken Burns and Trent Reznor would seem two unlikely collaborators, but both describe their recent work on the upcoming PBS documentary on the Vietnam War as among the most satisfying of their careers.

Reznor, the Nine Inch Nails singer and Academy Award-winning film score composer with partner Atticus Ross, made the score for the 10-part series that debuts this fall.

“The Vietnam War,” which premieres in September on PBS, will ultimately feature more than two cumulative hours of original music from Mr. Reznor and Mr. Ross, along with reworked bits from Nine Inch Nails songs and their scores for “The Social Network” and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble also contributed music to the documentary, while era-defining hits from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and more will be used as well.

Late last year, Reznor declared, “New NIN coming in 2016.  Other stuff, too.”  The other stuff amounted to the scores for Nasa’s Juno short film, the climate change documentary “Before the Flood” (featuring the song “A Minute To Breathe”) and the about-to-be-released Peter Berg film “Patriots Day”.  Now just in time he makes good on the Nine Inch Nails side of things.

Not The Actual Events, the new 5 song EP will be released next Friday, 12/23 with preorders live right now.  The EP finds Reznor and now official bandmate Atticus Ross taking an unexpected left turn from 2013’s Hesitation Marks and sounding unrecognizable from their current film work.

“It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make” says Reznor.  “It’s an EP because that ended up being the proper length to tell that story.”

Not The Actual Events is self-released and will be available on all digital platforms 12/23.  The NIN store is offering two formats available for pre-order now:  180g 1-sided Vinyl, and a unique limited Digital + Physical Component version.

A very special limited edition of The Fragile is now available for preorder in the NIN store.  This unique version of NIN’s classic record was created by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and features 37 instrumental, alternate and unreleased tracks, many of which have never been heard before anywhere.

Reznor explains, “The Fragile occupies a very interesting and intimate place in my heart.  I was going through a turbulent time in my life when making it and revisiting it has become a form of therapy for me.  As an experiment, I removed all the vocals from the record and found it became a truly changed experience that worked on a different yet compelling level.  The Fragile: Deviations 1 represents Atticus and I embellishing the original record with a number of tracks from those sessions we didn’t use before.  The result paints a complimentary but different picture we wanted to share.”

The Fragile: Deviations 1 will not be available on any digital services and only available in this format while this limited run lasts.

Trent Reznor and NIN art director John Crawford set out to make the “definitive editions” of all the main NIN releases on vinyl.  Reznor:  “We want to present the catalog as it was intended to be, with no compromises.  That means a careful remastering of the audio from the original sources, a careful and painstaking recreation of the artwork, pristine materials, some surprises and an insane attention to detail that you probably won’t notice… but it matters to us.  No extra bullshit and gimmicks – the “real” records in their truest form available at a reasonable price.”

The first three Definitive Editions (BrokenThe Downward Spiral and The Fragile) are available for preorder now in the NIN store (shipping spring ’17), with the rest to follow in ’17.

A year ago this week, Trent Reznor tweeted, “New NIN coming in 2016. Other stuff, too.” When reminded of this tweet now, though, he’s coy. “Those words did come out of my mouth, didn’t they?” he says bluntly. Then he feigns surprise. “Oh, yeah, it’s December, isn’t it?” He pauses. “Just wait and see what happens.”
