Protocol (film)

Protocol is a 1984 comedy film starring Goldie Hawn and Chris Sarandon, written by Buck Henry, and directed by Herbert Ross. Hawn plays a Washington, D.C., cocktail waitress who prevents the assassination of a visiting Arab emir and winds up a national heroine.

Plot

Sunny Ann Davis is a seemingly ditzy blonde who works as a cocktail waitress in Washington, D.C. She rents a small room in the home of a gay couple, has a lousy love life and drives a rust bucket of a car that she cannot afford to repair.

The car breaks down, blocking the route of a diplomatic convoy that is traveling to the White House. Unsympathetic to Sunny's predicament, the Diplomatic Security Service treat the incident as a possible security threat and move into full security mode, guns drawn. Sunny is naive to the seriousness of her situation, concerned only that she will now be late for work.

At the Safari Club where Sunny works, her night is getting worse. Her date cancels and she is forced to wear an emu suit because all of the other costumes are now taken by waitresses who arrived on time. She hates the costume because it invites unwanted sexual propositions. Even though she is "so broke," she refuses an offer from a patron requesting special "favors" in return for cash, as well as a loan from a waitress friend, Ella.

In this exclusive SoundWorks Collection profile we talk with the Music Conductor and Orchestrator Tim Simonec on the 20th Century Fox Newman Scoring stage for Director J.J. Abram's new film Star Trek Into Darkness. For years, Tim Simonec has been one of the busiest orchestrators in Hollywood. He has orchestrated and conducted over 70 feature films and 25 television series. He has also composed the music for the feature film A Rumor of Angels and Anne Frank: The Whole Story, which won an Emmy for best mini-series. He has worked with Graeme Revell since 1991 as his orchestrator and conductor.Some of their films together are Pineapple Express, Daredevil, The Negotiator, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. In 1996, he began working with composer Chris Tyng. Their projects together included kazaam, The Associate, and the TV series Futurama. Since 1997, Tim has been working with Michael Giacchino as his conductor and orchestrator/arranger. Over the years their projects have included video games such as Medal of Honor, Call of Duty; TV series, Alias, LOST, Fringe; and films, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, The Family Stone, Mission Impossible 3, Star Trek, UP, and most recently, Super 8, Cars 2, MI4: Ghost Protocol, and John Carter. For his arrangement of the end-titles of UP, Tim was nominated for a Grammy. Tim was born and raised in Chicago ...making him, to this day, a die-hard Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks fan. He began playing the organ and piano at age 8, and became the church organist at the ripe old age of 12! Despite his teen years at the keyboards, he chose to study theology in college. And while his intent was to become a minister, his love of music was a constant in his life. He arranged music for orchestra during college, and after graduation, Tim was hired to write a theme for a local television program. The moment he heard studio musicians play his composition, he realized his passion and career would be music. Although Tim decided to pursue a career in film composition, ironically, he did so by writing the scores for 40 religious films. While recording music for a religious documentary in London in 1979, recording engineer Eric Tomlinson (Star Wars, Superman) was impressed with Tim's composition and encouraged him to make the move to Los Angeles. Soon after arriving in LA, Tim was hired to compose music for Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, and Family Ties. All was moving along well until March of 1984. After experiencing debilitating numbness in his hands and a painful, stiff neck, Tim was diagnosed with a tumor on his cervical spinal cord. The operation to remove the tumor resulted in Tim becoming a quadriplegic. He was told he would never walk again. After thousands of prayers, the support and love of the woman who became his wife, and great determination, Tim learned to walk again. In medical terms, he is that rare phenomenon, a walking quadriplegic. He also regained partial use of his hands and is able to conduct orchestras. Tim's days at the keyboard were over but he knew he could compose, hopefully with the newest technology...the Apple computer! In 1986, he returned to pursue his passion and career in film music, which he continues to this day. Bill Drayton spoke with MaRS CEO, Dr. Ilse Treurnicht on June 19, 2014 about empathy, entrepreneurship and what the world would look like if we were all change-makers. In conversation with Bill Drayton was presented by SiG, Ashoka Canada and MaRS. About Bill Drayton: Bill Drayton pioneered the field of social entrepreneurship. While a student at Harvard College, Balliol College in Oxford University and Yale Law School, he launched a number of organizations, including Harvard’s Ashoka Table, an interdisciplinary weekly forum in the social sciences, and Yale Legislative Services. After graduating from Yale Law School in 1970, he began his career at McKinsey & Company in New York. From 1977 to 1981, Bill served as Assistant Administrator at the US Environmental Protection Agency, where he launched various reforms, including emissions trading (the basis of the Kyoto Protocol). From 1981 to 1985, while working part-time at McKinsey, he founded both Ashoka and Save EPA, the predecessor to Environmental Safety. After receiving a MacArthur Fellowship in 1984, he was able to devote himself fully to Ashoka. In addition to his current role as Chairman and CEO of Ashoka, Bill is the chair of Youth Venture, Community Greens, and Get America Working!

The Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade is proud to present the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition in Serbia. Jasmina Cibic’s work explores histories of ideological formations, which she addresses with site and context specific installations, performance and film. By traversing different structures and systems, the artist creates projects that often feel like Gesamtkunstwerke within which she re-works found ready-mades spanning from language, architecture to historical events. These form components of a theatrical stage and speak of their place of origin infused with a variable effective half-life, charged with former ideologies that only slowly over time can cool down. Jasmina Cibic investigates these properties outside of their usual habitat and aside from their physical reality as communicative mediums that are charged (and recharged) with meaning and political programmatic. The artist’s new project for the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade presents the third chapter of the artist’s series Spielraum (initiated at Ludwig Museum Budapest and MGLC Ljubljana earlier this year) which questions the potential of instrumentalization of visual language, rhetoric and architecture in the construction of the State as spectacle throughout recent history and investigates how art and architecture can serve as soft power strategies of every political order. The exhibition at MOCAB presents a theatrical set, composed of a performative installation and a new film work, which the artist shot in the former Palace of the Federation in Belgrade. The building, completed in 1961 in order to host the first conference of the Non-Aligned Movement, was conceived as a part of the urban plan for New Belgrade and represented the physical embodiment of new ideas in post 2WW Yugoslavia . In the period of scarce resources, its construction became a visual paraphrase of the construction of the new federal state and its ideological underpinnings. The interior of the building was conceived as a visualisation of the “representational” Yugoslav elements from all six federal republics, featuring their local wood, stone, carpets and artworks. What was constructed as the stage for new world politics presenting a middle course for states in the developing world between the Western and Eastern Blocs in the Cold War, today exists as an empty theatre box: void of its actors. It is the stage that becomes the actor itself, it is the stage that Jasmina Cibic resurrects as the focal point of ideological consideration in her exhibition Tear Down and Rebuild. Cibic’s new film features an all-female cast and frames its four characters (a Nation Builder, a Pragmatist, a Conservationist and an Artist/Architect) as an extension of the architecture and its fittings – formally completing the empty stage, as sculptures rising from the scenographic background, the architecture itself. The film’s dialogue is composed from quotes drawn from various political speeches, debates and proclamations on iconoclasm of architecture, art and monuments; the language that endorsed demolition and redesign, which was to aid the creation of new displays for ensuing nation-states or ideological positions throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The sources for the script include amongst others: Regan’s speech on the Berlin Wall, Prince Charles’s 1984 address at RIBA and Isis bloggers’ proclamation on the demolishment of temples. As the film’s narrative unfolds, the viewer is a witness to the final decision to demolish the fictitious building, the image of which is constructed in the spectator’s imagination through a collage of quotations on diverse, ideologically contrived and historically charged buildings, monuments, walls etc. that were to be or were knocked down - pointing to the universality and timelessness of the paradox of national and ideological representation and its icons. Jasmina Cibic’s installation at MOCAB reworks two spaces: the scenography of the cinematic space for the viewing of the film along with its seating/sculptures and a performative installation in its antechamber, a space covered in its entirety with representations of a fictitious landscape that the artist has composed from numerous photographs drawn from the archives of Josip Broz Tito’s personal photographers. These present picturesque and sublime landscapes as captured by the artists (photographers) in the servitude of the state, setting the scene for the various protocol events scattered around the globe that were to shape the geo-politics of the post 2WW world. Within this composite landscape, Cibic displays quotes from various political speeches on nation building, as blown up banners deposited on top of trees and mountains throughout the imagined landscape. During the exhibition, a performance will take place, where a group of artists will be gilding this series of positive affirmations as the final act of staging the Gesamtkunstwerk Tear Down and

During the Vietnam war, the US military sprayed 20 million gallons of chemicals in an attempt to destroy enemy cover in the jungle. Still today millions of people are concerned by the chromosomal damage which Agent Orange, the herbicide used in this campaign caused. Since 1978 the people and groups affected are still fighting for their compensation for the damages in various lawsuits. On May 7th 1984, the US judge Jack B Weinstein and the concerned parties agreed on an out-of-court settlement. It stated that Monsanto and Dow Chemical, who were responsible for producing the herbicides, would have to pay 180 million dollars compensation to the US veterans affected by dioxin. By settling, the plaintiffs could avoid the question of causation and not risk their case on statistical evidence, and the defendants could minimize the chance of a catastrophically high cost jury verdict. Compensation was only paid when the disease was listed in the compensation list of the Department of Veteran Affairs and if the concerned veteran could prove that – they had served the US Army during the Vietnam war – they were stationed in Vietnam in this period of time – their compensable injury appeared after their service in Vietnam and that they finished their service honorably In the end, 197 Million dollars were paid to US veterans. It was the highest amount ever paid in an out-of-court settlement. But what about Vietnam? On January 31 2004, the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange – VAVA – and several individual plaintiffs decided to sue the responsible. They claimed that the use of Agent Orange violated the 1925 Geneva Protocol, the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the 1907 Hague Convention IV. On March 10, 2005, Jack B. Weinstein, the same judge as in the 1984 case, dismissed the lawsuit. He concluded, that even though Agent Orange contained the known poison Dioxin, it was not intended to be used as a poison against humans. Moreover, he said that the companies which produced the substance can not held responsible for the method of its use due «government contractor defense». And finally, it is not possible to sue the US government for war damages as this is ruled out in their constitution. The evidence of general causality provided by the plaintiffs to date lacks sufficient probative force. «Courts cannot, unfortunately, wait indefinitely until all scientists have completed their long term studies. They must decide on information now available.» J. Weinstein The lawsuit was dismissed in five instances between 2004 and 2009. Even today the judgement is seen as controversial by a considerable number of jurists. In 2006 in South Korea, there was the first judicial leading case to the benefit of the veterans serving in the Vietnam war. The Supreme Court in Seoul sentenced several producers of the herbicide to a payment of 62 Milion Dollars compensation to South Korean veterans.
