Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, i/ɪˈrɑːk/, or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq, Kurdish: Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic: جمهورية العراق Jumhūrīyat al-‘Irāq; Kurdish: كۆماری عێراق Komar-i ‘Êraq), is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.

(27 Feb 2015) In gunsmith Bahktiyar Sadr-Aldeen's workshop in the Kurdish city of Irbil, every weapon has a story. Sadr-Aldeen, an Iraqi Kurd, has seen business increase by 50 percent since last June, when Islamic State militants took over Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, 82 kilometres (52 miles) west of Irbil. The Kurdish fighting force known as the pershmerga has been at war against the Islamic State militant group ever since. Sadr-Aldeen says there is "no professional company" to fix all the weapons that "naturally break" during the fighting. "That is why I fix them. We cannot just throw them away, because we are in a war," he explained. Aged 36, Sadr-Aldeen already has more than a quarter-century of experience, making him the peshmerga's top gunsmith in the region. He says h...

Picking out sugar pots, it's just another day for the two women in Dohuk, a city in Iraq's Northern Kurdish region. As other parts of the country descend into chaos, this city of one million people is an oasis of relative calm and stability. Many residents here say their lives have not been that affected by the conflict. "We are fine and feel very safe here," says Nashwa Zayto...

Five years after the invasion, Iraq's health care system remains in crisis. Hospitals have to deal with the aftermath of bombs and shootings on a daily basis. It is very hard for doctors to do their job. They often lack basic equipment and the necessary drugs to treat the injured. And many health workers have just been murdered or kidnapped.
March 2004 For Iraqis, the breakdown of their health service is just as concerning as the decline in security. At Baghdad Central Children's hospital, used needles litter the filthy corridors. There is rotting garbage and a cesspool underneath the wards. "I'm afraid the smell and diseases coming from that pool will make her even more sick," fears one patient's mother. The biggest threat to the children here comes from cross-infection caused by unsanitary conditions. Only three of the six wards are operating because of staff or equipment shortages. Some patients even have to sleep on the floor because there are not enough beds. "The Americans said they would build hospitals, treat children," complains one patient's father. "But all you find is killing, illness, and death." Produced ...

T/I: 10:12:28 The World Health Organisation says Iraq's health system is close to collapse, a view shared by the country's medical establishment. Supplies of aid from international organisations have been reduced to a trickle. Despite a United Nations memorandum intended to boost the flow of medical supplies, only one out of 347 contracts for medicines has been approved by the relevant UN committee. The shortage of supplies is delaying vital surgical operations. The devastating health effects of the US military’s toxic burn pits, which operated at bases throughout Iraq and Afghanistan during the Iraq War, have been exposed by former US Marine and Army sergeant Joseph Hickman in his new book “The Burn Pits: The Poisoning of America’s Soldiers”. The book reveals that thousands of soldiers who served in the vicinity of over 250 military burn pits ended up getting cancer, or having children with birth defects as a result. The book also reveals that the burn pits were operated by a former subsidiary of Halliburton, the company where Dick Cheney was CEO before becoming Vice President. Did Cheney get rich while US soldiers got poisoned? We look at the burn pit scandal on the Lip News with Jo Ankier and Elliot Hill. http://www.salon.com/2016/02/16/burn_p...
While hosting a White House gathering for Senators, President Donald Trump commented that doing a health care insurance deal would be easy and said US soldiers in Iraq were fighting "like never before." White House Press Secretary says the comments were made in a "light hearted moment" and Trump knows that a deal on health care insurance will be difficult. He says that Trump does know that US soldiers in Iraq are no longer fighting house-to-house like they have under the Bush and Obama administrations and they are in Iraq in an advisory role.
Today thousands of volunteers throughout New York City distributed "special edition" copies of the New York Times. http://nytimes-se.com The front page proclaimed "IRAQ WAR ENDS" and the paper's 14 pages were filled with utopian stories about the passing of universal health care and the American economy returning to normal. It was future-dated July 4th, 2009.
It's the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War and with talk of it not being even half-way through, we are approaching the 4000th American combat death. More importantly, a recent World Health Organization report based on Iraqi Health Ministry figures estimated that 151,000 Iraqi civilians were killed between March 2003, the start of the invasion, and June 2006. Many of the reports of civilian deaths are disputed. What cannot be argued, however, is another grave consequence of the Iraq War: the displacement crisis as a mass exodus of Iraqis flee the instabilities and ever-increasing sectarian violence at home, tearing their families apart. In mid-January 2008, with the support of the United Nations High Commission For Refugees (UNHCR), I traveled to Amman, Jordan to photograph and record a...

High in the mountains of northeastern Iraq’s Kurdistan region, wildlife conservationist Hana Ahmed Raza and a team of researchers with the non-governmental organization Nature Iraq are working to protect the ghostlike Persian leopard. A sub-species of the broader family of leopards roaming across Africa and Asia, the Persian leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor) numbers between 800 and 1,000 individuals, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is under threat due to poaching, habitat loss and fragmentation, and diminishing prey. Why is this particular species of leopard so important? As Raza points out in the video, “The Persian leopard is the only remaining predator in the [Kurdistan] ecosystem,” and the health of the ecosystem depends on the presence of large...

The First Battle of Fallujah, also known as Operation Vigilant Resolve, was an operation to root out extremist elements of Fallujah and an act of retaliation to, as well as an attempt to apprehend the perpetrators of, the killing of four U.S. contractors in April 2004. The chief catalyst for the operation was the highly publicized killing and mutilation of four Blackwater USA private military contractors, and the killings of five American soldiers in Habbaniyah a few days earlier. The battle polarized public opinion within Iraq. The Second Battle of Fallujah—code-named Operation Al-Fajr and Operation Phantom Fury—was a joint American, Iraqi, and British offensive in November and December 2004, considered the highest point of conflict in Fallujah during the Iraq War. Filmed in June and July 2016 in Iraq By mid 2016 the Iraqi military had broken ISIS’s grip on all but one city, the country’s second largest Mosul. As Iraq forces prepared for their assault on Mosul ISIS again demonstrated that though were losing ground militarily they could still strike with deadly suicide attacks targeting the civilians in the heart of the capital Baghdad. Ty Moore has been a Marine longer than he hasn’t. After 5 deployments he has seen his fair share of trauma in the theatre of war. Ty was trained to handle trauma. By his own account he isn’t afraid of anything. That is until the trauma was in Ty’s own home. Jenn, his wife, was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma, a very aggressive cancer in her ribs. Like they have done throughout their marriage they persevered. They both thought this would be the worst thing their family ever went through, they were wrong. Shaving for Beginners is the story of Ty, a father, a Marine, and a husband, as he takes his brokenness from situations outside his control and creates hope for him, his family, and his fellow servicemen and women. www.Bog.club Directed by Jordan Halland Produced by Luke Webster

Jake Harriman served over seven years as a platoon commander in both the Infantry and an elite unit of Marines called Force Recon. Jake left his career in the Marines to start an organization to end extreme poverty. He enrolled at Stanford's Graduate School of Business, and with the help of his classmates, professors, and some Silicon Valley venture capitalists, Jake formed Nuru International. This is his story. Pictures from Iraq show the site of a new sports project in the holy city of Karbala called the 'Sports City'. The destination of millions of Shi'ite pilgrims visiting the shrine of prophet Mohammed's grandson, Karbala is now looking to attract a new kind of visitor. Sports City is close to completion and the brainchild of the Iraq ministry of youth and sports covers an area of approximately 315 square kilometres. Work started on the project in 2012. The completed site will contain: an international football stadium with 30,000 capacity, a 2,000-seater athletics stadium, and a new training facility for Karbala's football team. Bombing attacks across...

Now he's in the massive and convoluted international basketball pipeline, playing wherever he can. His latest stop: Naft Al-Janoob of the Iraqi Division I Basketball League in Basra, scene to some of the most vicious battles of the Iraqi War and a city that continues to experience its share of violence. This video is my own personal experience in that I had in Erbil, Iraq and only Erbil. I did not travel around anywhere else in Iraq and can not speak for other places. But from my knowledge and research, Erbil is one of the most peaceful cities within Iraq and varies greatly in culture due to the Kurdistan way of life and government, which they're very proud of. Please take this video as an educational experience about another city in Iraq aside from the ones we see/hear on the news every day. Political or negative comments will not be welcome. Iran – formerly Persia - is the biggest country of the Middle East. Due to the fact that sky-high snowy mountains, extended deserts, verdant oases, turquoise cupola mosques and cultural and architectural relic sites of World Heritage are waiting for all visitors it can be a very desirable destination even for tourists who continuously look for the new and varied. In Tehran the luxurious palaces of Persian shahs, the Museum of Archaeology and the Museum of Carpets and Rugs are the sights that “must” be seen. Yazd and Kerman is well-known for their mosques and bazaars, Naqsh-e Rustam is for its rock-hewn tombs, Rayen and Persepolis are for the remains of their palaces and castles from the time of the Persian Empire. # 12 Things NOT To Do in Iraq By: http://www.destinationtips.com/ Iraq is a lovely place. So know these 12 Things NOT to Do, before you go! 1. Try Not to stand out Rather than driving fast, surrounded by bodyguards try to blend in as much as possible. Women should dress in local fashion and men should grow out their facial hair. 2. Don't Step On Bread! Bread is a highly treasured food in Iraq. If you happen across a fallen hunk in the street don't step on it or touch it with your feet! 3. Don't Visit the Borders. Don't travel near the Syrian, Turkish, or Iranian borders. You may encounter large refugee flows. 4. Don't Bring Bad Luck. When Iraqis buy a new appliance they will crack an egg over it to wash away any bad luck! Iraqis are very superstitious. 5. Don't Get Jumpy! You oft...

Directed by Nahid Ghobadi and Bijan Zamanpira, Iraq, 2012 A government official, carrying a message from Iran’s president, travels across Iranian Kurdistan with his driver and a young guide on a mission to stop 111 young Kurdish women from committing suicide in protest against conditions that have left them spinsters. Racing against the clock, they travel into territory simmering with resentment at official neglect and the hardship it has sown among a proud people. Against a dramatically colorful physical and human landscape, wistful longing mingles with dreamlike desire and absurdist humor as the three travelers meander helplessly in a land riddled with contradictions. U.S ARMY in Iraq Epic Battle You've Never Seen Before - Full Documentary
In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives. The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor. Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time. But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.
