Hadrian's Wall (Latin: Vallum Aelium), also called the Roman Wall, Picts' Wall, or Vallum Hadriani in Latin, was a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, begun in 122 AD during the reign of the emperor Hadrian. It ran from the banks of the River Tyne near the North Sea to the Solway Firth on the Irish Sea. It had a stone base and a stone wall. There were milecastles with two turrets in between. There was a fort about every five Roman miles. From north to south, the wall comprised a ditch, wall, military way and vallum (another ditch with adjoining mounds). It is thought that the milecastles were staffed with static garrisons, whereas the forts had fighting garrisons of infantry and cavalry. In addition to the wall's defensive military role, its gates may have been used as customs posts.
A significant portion of the wall still stands and can be followed on foot along the adjoining Hadrian's Wall Path. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Hadrian (/ˈheɪdriən/; Latin: Publius Aelius Hadrianus Augustus; 24 January, 76 AD – 10 July, 138 AD) was Roman emperor from 117 to 138. Hadrian is known for building Hadrian's Wall, which marked the northern limit of Britannia. He also rebuilt the Pantheon and constructed the Temple of Venus and Roma. Philhellene in most of his tastes, he is considered by some to have been a humanist, and he is regarded as one of the Five Good Emperors.
Hadrian was born Publius Aelius Hadrianus into a Hispano-Roman family. Although Italica near Santiponce (in modern-day Spain) is often considered his birthplace, his actual place of birth remains uncertain. However, it is generally accepted that he came from a family with centuries-old roots in Hispania. His predecessor, Trajan, was a maternal cousin of Hadrian's father. Trajan did not officially designate an heir, but according to his wife Pompeia Plotina, Trajan named Hadrian emperor immediately before his death. Trajan's wife and his friend Licinius Sura were well-disposed towards Hadrian, and he may well have owed his succession to them.
A wall is a structure that defines an area, carries a load, or provides shelter or security. There are many kinds of walls:
Wall comes from Latin vallum meaning "...an earthen wall or rampart set with palisades, a row or line of stakes, a wall, a rampart, fortification..." while the Latin word murus means a defensive stone wallEnglish uses the same word to mean an external wall and the internal sides of a room, but this is not universal. Many languages distinguish between the two. In German, some of this distinction can be seen between Wand and Mauer, in Spanish between pared and muro.
The word wall originally referred to defensive walls and ramparts.
A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record. Such films were originally shot on film stock—the only medium available—but now include video and digital productions that can be either direct-to-video, made into a TV show or released for screening in cinemas. "Documentary" has been described as a "filmmaking practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception" that is continually evolving and is without clear boundaries.
In popular myth, the word documentary was coined by Scottish documentarian John Grierson in his review of Robert Flaherty's film Moana (1926), published in the New York Sun on 8 February 1926, written by "The Moviegoer" (a pen name for Grierson).
Grierson's principles of documentary were that cinema's potential for observing life could be exploited in a new art form; that the "original" actor and "original" scene are better guides than their fiction counterparts to interpreting the modern world; and that materials "thus taken from the raw" can be more real than the acted article. In this regard, Grierson's definition of documentary as "creative treatment of actuality" has gained some acceptance, with this position at variance with Soviet film-maker Dziga Vertov's provocation to present "life as it is" (that is, life filmed surreptitiously) and "life caught unawares" (life provoked or surprised by the camera).
Tony Robinson and the Team travel to the Roman fort of Birdoswald in Cumbria to carry out the first ever excavation of a Roman cemetery near the wall. But during the dig - which includes a spectacular recreation of a funeral pyre - they also discover the remains of a Roman town that ceased to exist after the year 200. Could it have been one of the largest Roman towns in northern Britain? And why did it die?

Hadrian's Wall: Protective Stronghold in Ancient Times - History Documentary Films. Hadrian's Wall (Latin: Vallum Aelium) was a protective stronghold in the Roman district of Britannia, begun in AD 122 throughout the guideline of emperor Hadrian. Along with its military part, entrances via the wall surface worked as customs articles. Travel video about destination Hadrian's Wall in England. The famous Roman emperor Hadrian gave his name to what would become an even more famous wall, a powerful fortification in the north of England that served as protection against the ‘Barbarians’ and extended right up to the Scottish border.Construction of the wall in the 2nd century A.D. signified hope for a lasting and secure defence against the invading Celts. Hadrian´s enormous line of defence covered an area between the North Sea coast and the Irish Sea and part of it stretched across Cumbria and Northumberland. The wall was meant to re-establish Roman power and ten thousand soldiers were commanded to protect it. Originally, the wall was 4½ metres high and approximately 3 metres wide and its length of around 120 kilometres was a ...

Looking at what remains of the fort in this remote place after nearly 2000 years. We were surprised that during the time we were there many people passed by, walking the whole length of Hadrians Wall which stretches right across England.. In such a peaceful place today, apart from the wind, it is amazing that back in Roman occupation days, it was necessary to defend the area against the Picts and the Scots! Thank goodness we work together and are united today in the UK! Lets hope it stays that way! Borders cause problems of their own!

Hadrian's Wall was built by the Romans to protect their colony in England from the Pictish tribes in Scotland. It stretches for 87 miles across the north of England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea in the counties of Cumbria, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. Built by Roman soldiers in the 2nd century A.D., only stretches of the wall are still visible, but the wealth of archae...
Last Summer, before Dark Ages Warrior even existed, I [Harris] walked the length of Hadrian's wall for charity. I managed to raise £1500 for the National Autistic Society thanks to many generous donations. Plenty of people walk the wall but to make it more of a challenge I carried all my food and equipment with me, slept outdoors with only a small mosquito net tent for protection and in honour of the Romans (and by the far the most stupid thing I did), walked the 84 miles in Roman style walking sandals. My.....feet.....got......destroyed! Anyway, with plans to walk Offa's dyke later this year, I thought I share my step by step guide for anyone else who wanted to give Hadrian's wall a go. It may not be that useful.....but might make you chuckle.
Hadrian's Wall (Latin: Vallum Aelium, "Aelian Wall") was a defensive fortification in Roman Britain. Begun in AD 122, during the rule of emperor Hadrian, it was the first of two fortifications built across Great Britain, the second being the Antonine Wall, lesser known of the two because its physical remains are less evident today. The wall was the most heavily fortified border in the Empire. In addition to its role as a military fortification, it is thought that many of the gates through the wall would have served as customs posts to allow trade and levy taxation. A significant portion of the wall still exists, having been rescued in the 19th century by John Clayton, who, alarmed at the destruction by quarrying, bought a number of sections. For much of its length, the wall can be follo...
The latest challenge I planned was the Hadrians wall path running from Carlisle to Newcastle, we added a few extra miles to make it a coast to coast hike. Camping along the way, hiking 90 miles in 5 days was not easy, from what I gather not many do it that fast with full camping packs on so it was a great challenge. An emotional roller coaster as we loose members of the team as we go and make friends as well, check it out! Become a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OutdoorLifeOfBrian Connect with me!
