Following the success of ‘
Baby Take A Bow’ (
Twentieth Century Fox 1934),
TCF set out to make the most of their newly contracted starlet by dedicating a new division of the company to her films. “
Bright Eyes” was the first actual ‘
Shirley Temple Film’, entirely written and designed around the goal of her being the lead role. This would be the last time
Temple shared the set with her cherished idol,
James Dunn, who was just coming into his own successful career as an actor, and just preceding his long battle with alcoholism. Temple’s signature line changed from the babyish ‘Yipee!’ of her earlier roles to the iconic “
Oh my goodness!” that has been associated with her brand ever since. She later received an academy award for her contribution to recent films, including
Little Miss Marker and Bright Eyes, which typically exceeded the capacity of a mere performer. Temple was a notoriously critical and vocal assistant to set design and script plotting in her films.
Cast and crew who encountered her throughout her career testified that Temple was in the habit of making herself an integral part of each production. Writing staff testified that her films not only benefited from her zeal, but were majorly inspired be her own candid behavior and interests. She was, and remains, the youngest person to ever receive an academy award.
During production, an incident involving a parachute, a large fan, a malfunctioning staff member, and a pressure-sealed door that was not supposed to be opened, sent Temple and
Dunn dangerously drug across the studio floor after dropping from an elevated rig. It easily could have proven to be a fatal situation for two of the twentieth century’s most celebrated stars, but thankfully, they emerged unharmed and continued shooting.
Bright Eyes was the last film with
Marilyn Granas serving as Temple’s stand-in for set preparation. She was expected to be used as an on-screen double for Temple many times, but all of her shots were cut from every film she would have appeared in and her mother reacted by removing her from the staff. Granas was replaced by the famously absent
Mary Lou Isleib, who quickly bonded with Temple, and they would remain close friends for years.
This film would also mark the beginning of the enormous success of
Jane Withers’ acting career, who’s popularity surpassed even Temple’s at the time. Although she had performed in earlier films, Bright Eyes became her real launch-pad.
Withers was reluctant to take the bratty role of ‘Joy Smythe’ for fear of the public’s reaction to seeing her treat their dimpled little hero so cruelly, but film producers and talent recruiters across the country quickly noticed her exceedingly adept performance talents and she would go on to perform in movies and television for decades.
Gertrude Temple,
Shirley’s mother, protested Withers' participation in the film and requested that her role be reduced, presumably out of concern for the child’s potential to outshine Shirley.
Time would prove that presumed concern valid. Withers’ overwhelming fame eventually became a contributing factor to the end of Temple’s career as Temple struggled to compete for roles and popularity against Withers and other big stars. Withers died a well-sung hero to the motion-picture arts in
2002.
Today, Temple and her brand are perhaps more popularly known than Withers’, but Withers’ films are equally coveted by collectors and include many titles thought to be masterpieces of the era.
Master-entertainer
Charles Sellon retired at the end of 1935 and died at the age of 66, a few years following the release of Bright Eyes, making this one of his last few performances in a lifelong career of acting.
Super extra double mega total special thanks to my movie-trailer-voice actor,
Brian Boyd, for his excellent performance. If you are interested in getting him for voicing on your own projects, give me some contact info and a brief description of what you would have him do and I will forward it to him. He works independently though,
I am not his manager. It will be up to you to impress him into taking the job.
This is probably the most fun film to edit that I have yet made a trailer for, and also a great learning experience, working with a voice actor and integrating their performance into the video.
Brian proved to have a good texture-rich voice that feels both serious and solid while also versatile and soft. I hope we get to work on another video together soon! Bright Eyes is full of deeply impactful and inspiring scenes, from Miss
Blake’s devastating reaction at the news of her mother’s death, to the annoyingly clever and adorable song performance, “
Good Ship Lollipop” (not featured in the trailer). It also has very little background score, which greatly increases the amount of footage I can use audio from. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it!
Please kindly comment, rate and share!
